This video is about how to use a compression wrap (Dema-Wrap™) to decrease swelling in your fingers or hand. I would recommend 1 inch rolls for the fingers. 2 inch can be used for the hand or wrist.

I was trying to explain to somebody today, how to wrap one's finger after watching your video a couple months ago. So happy I found this video again. It helped heal my middle finger that was swollen a couple months ago. Now I wrap my index and middle finger on the right side to ease pressure of clicking and scrolling with my fingers (Raynaud's) that get sensitive and numb at the tips of the fingers.

If it’s swollen just from like a small cut or infection, continuously dip it in HOT water for a few times. Don’t scald yourself, just quick dips.

@@97warlock If the swelling is caused by bacteria or a foreign body breaking the skin, the hot water can kill the bacteria and deactivate some of the swelling (I think)

I know this video has some age on it, but I do hope that you are still willing to give advice. Six weeks ago, I tripped over a parking block when walking around my van and fell onto my fingers severely cutting my index and ring fingers and and nearly severed the fingertip from the bone right across the cuticle nail bed of my middle finger. Who knew asphalt could THAT just from a little tumble?! Thankfully, the surgeon was able to stitch me up and straighten the bone fracture in my middle finger and even stitched my fingernail back into place, so though there is still some numbness, my fingers are all still there, thank you, God! All the stitches are now out, and I have gotten a good report with every follow up doctor's visit, but I have a lot of fluid swelling in the pads. I have been using coban for the past three or so weeks as well as using elevation, gentle rubbing, and even the occasional ice pack, but the fluid is still there. They go down quite a bit while wearing the coban, but it quickly returns within minutes of removing it. I still have two weeks before I see the PA again, and I am wondering how long this swelling typically lasts for such an injury? Is there anything more, less, or different that I should be doing? Any words of assurance will be comforting and very much appreciated!

Hi. I am not a doctor, but from personal experience with cutting the tip of my pinky finger off a little over a month ago, my finger still has some swelling. The Coban does work, also ice and an NSAID like Ibuprofen or Naproxen, or if they gave you any prescription like Celebrex or Toradol. I go back next in another couple of weeks. Depending on the swelling, you may need to ask the provider if you need an antibiotic. Hope you get better fast

@@livid4387 Thank you, I appreciate your response. I am sorry to hear that you are going through this pain, too! Sounds like we are going through these painful experiences at roughly the same time. I had Frankenstein looking hands just in time for halloween , lol. (I sure wasn't laughing when it happened, though!) I have already gone through three rounds of antibiotics, and the doctors say that they look free of infection in spite of the swelling, so they wanted to hold off on another round unless it starts to show sign of infection, God forbid. I do have a prescription strength nsaid, but it does a number on my stomach, so I have to use it judiciously. I suppose I'll have to keep binding them with the coban and just wait it out for whatever time it takes unless someone knows of something else to try. I sure hope you are doing well with your finger and continue to do well in every way in the future, as well!

i had approximately 5 years ago hit my finger on a ball and since then my joint is swollen and thicker then normal.. the swelling never did go away and the thickening.. but i can fully move my finger and do not have pain (i can also extend my finger more then normal like hyperextension because of the injury i had).. is this situation normal?

I've got a swelling in my ring finger of my right hand where the tip of the finger is sensitve, i also have brusing on tip of this finger on both my ring fingers while the small swelling is where you would put a ring on the ring finger. My ring finger, middle and small fingers are sensitive on both my right and left hand so it makes picking up and touching items difficult. Mine is a small swelling from possible nerve damage which is making my ring finger sensitive. So I can leave it on allday and how long until i should see the swelling go away? I've had it for 10 weeks now.

Thank you this made sense about lack of muscles in the fingers and no where for the swelling to go. Im having issues with the healing process with a mallet finger. I have strapped my little finger to the good finger overnight using the same type of dressing you display. It seems better overnight but the the swelling appears again as soon as a use my fingers there is also discolouration that I assume is bruising as it feels a little sore as a opposed to painful. Of course if i sit with my hand held above heart then the colour goes back to its normal skin tone. Difficult when you need to go to work and I am typing all day / driving and doing all other normal day today things. Looks like Im in for a long healing process. this all happend with a large dog hitting my fnger and had to wear a splint for 8 weeks. The first joint will not bend. I have been reffered back for a second x-ray by my doctor so await for the results.

Hi, how is your finger now? My injury is different to yours but I'm displaying similar symptoms. I fell down the stairs 11 weeks ago, ripping my pinky open. 6 stitches. When I got the stitches out, I wrapped it in coban wrap for weeks on end. My finger has healed in a straight position. At physio last week and was given exercises to do every hour. I can't bend the pip and dip joint very much. The swelling is bad and is stopping me from getting any further forward. It also turns blue as soon as I start physio on it. I hope you mended your finger well abd if so, how long did it take please?

Would band aids help/work as well? My bump doesnt look that serious, I just got it today, probably because I was trying to spin a cosplay Jango Fett blaster pistol, and I felt little pinch while spinning it. So i don't know if its serious or not but if it is, can Band Aids work as well? I'm just wondering.

No Band-Aids will not work the same way as Coban.

I got surgery on Nov 2020 because my finger was Soo swollen because I got poked with a palm tree. It stayed swollen for over a year and Dr thought it was fluid but he couldn't take out with a syringe. So he did surgery on it. It still same size and feels like it's getting bigger I have a fat knuckle wich hurts. This just makes it look skinny but when I take out it gets fat again. U know any other thing I can do to unswell finger it's still fat after 4 months of surgery

Did you have an injury? If you did, it can take up to a year in the finger for swelling to go away but if you didn't have an injury then definitely go to a doctor to find out why it is swelling.

I don't understand your question. We don't have muscles in the finger but extra bone may be from an injury. I would see a doctor for this if you haven't yet.

I don't know when your surgery was or anything else, however any type of compression/wrap for a flap or graft needs to be approved by your doctor or hand therapist. Placing a wrap between joints will cause swelling above and below the area which is not recommended.

@@VirtualHandCare I was told that about my swelling after a Colles fracture, but no one says why. Is there anything that can be done to remove the swelling quicker? I had a distal radius fracture and a hairline of the ulna. There is not much swelling on the radius side, but so much on the ulna side that it has a slight protusion. Would Coban wrapping of the wrist help this? If so, can you do a video, please? Thank you.

Beverly Williams Coban will definitely help your middle finger swelling. At 4 weeks it is still very common to have swelling in your finger after a trigger finger release.

Interesting it's almost like support hose for your fingers! I injured myself April 8th had surgery April 21st it's July 3rd today and my fingers are still swollen in the middle one is actually colder than the others. I asked my PT and doctor about it and neither one had any suggestions. I will try this!

Hi Laurie! I too injured myself (broken arm/wrist/plate and screws put in) and 8 weeks ltr still swollen fingers, and surgeon/pt..they just shrug. Nothing works! Elevation, ice, physio..nada. I'm trying this now. Compression socks lol

@@loripoulin4329 I hope it works for you! My swelling finally went down, 7 months out, but my fingers on that hand are still a couple of ring sizes bigger than the uninjured hand. Least of my problems, bc " the Claw " developed some unfortunate complications. What also helped the swelling was something that my PT showed me how to do, which was to milk my fingers after warming my hand up. That really helped reduce the swelling. How you do it is your oil up your injured hand. Then wrap the index finger around whichever finger you are working on, put you thumb on the other side, ( basically creating a hole) and gently stroke down the finger towards the hand, while holding your hand and forearm in a vertical position. When you're done with that massage the webbing between the fingers at the base. I used black seed oil, which is anti-inflammatory. Good luck! You will get thru this! 👍

@@loganAFC hi Logan. So sorry you are going thru this right now. Here's the thing, you're gonna be okay. I know it doesn't feel like that atm, but you WILL heal. I'm now about 18 months out, my hand is still stiff and my index finger can't rightly fold all the way down to my palm, but the rest of my hand is okay ( if a little stiff some days). You just have to be patient... And keep working on building your strength and flexibility. No video for this, my man.But wishing you a fast full recovery and a healthy happy 2023. Deuces! 🎉

I punched a pole and now my knuckle from my pinky finger is sole does anyone know what I can do to get the swelling down cause I don't have those bands

Thank you! I got bitten by a cat amd my finger is swollen. I'm on oral antibiotics, I also got an antibiotic shot and tetanus shot. The nurse told me to bandage my finger to reduce swelling but didn't show me how.

4 years is a long time although if you have never tried these techniques before it may be worth a shot!

@@VirtualHandCare i had my pinky finger fracture ..post op i developed swelling in proximal interphalengeal joint.have taken steroids injection twice in that joint but still it swells up in morning especially and becomes stiff. All blood test are negative. Rheumatologist have said to take pain killers sos.i don't know what should i do.

sam witwicky it is hard to say what is causing your swelling. If you haven’t seen a Hand specialist then I would advice to do so since it sounds like there could be other things causing your swelling. In the meantime try coban wrapping your finger at night to see if you get relief of swelling in the morning.

If you have just had surgery or an injury then yes you should elevate the swollen area as often as you can. A few minutes, every hour. There really is no general rule as far as how long you should elevate the finger. Just avoid leaving it hanging down far long periods of time. The best things for swollen fingers are compression like coban wrapping in this video, gentle exercises, elevation, and heat or ice (but this is dependent on why your finger is swollen).

@@VirtualHandCare swelling,stiffness, muscle weakness,pain. It is decided that This everything bcoz of nerve damage. But nobody tells me how to reduce the swelling. At first my index finger PIP joint was injured in ligament. After that all fingers are painful but swelling is at middle finger PIP joint only Any advice please?
