Glen is the real deal. Best pool table mechanic in the world probably. Glue prevents staple holes which destroy the backing of the slate over time and allow you to stretch index the cloth properly. He should be teaching full time there is a lot more to table maintenance than people have any idea about. Kudos!

Brother, hear the man grunting? You come back in a year, run a ripper up the middle, and when a 1 1/2 inch gap opens up; THERE IS YOUR TEST. That fabric still had some stretch in it. Some mechanics are so weak that the fabric is wrinkling and/or bunching in front of the ball within DAYS. Their glue and technique is often crap as well.

Thank you for all this information on pool table installations. It has helped tremendously 🙏 I have one question that would help me out greatly if you have the chance to respond. I've been helping out my local pool hall installing new cloth and we've been installing the Simonis 760. After doing the stretch indexing, we end up with a stretch from side to side of 2.5". Minus the .75" we end up with 1.75" working index. When it comes to the ends of the table, I'm able to stretch both ends at least 3+ inches, at both ends even when one end is stretched and anchored. We install the cloth dry, no water at all. I'm sure it's user error on my side, but I'm wondering if the ends should be able to stretch that much over the side to side working index? Or is it more important to just stay within the stretch index numbers regardless if the cloth can stretch passed that? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again for you all your input.
@therealkingcobra
@therealkingcobra День назад
Then you need to increase the side to side, and the ends equally. For example, if you're stretching 2" side to side, then both ends should be 2" as well. But when you stretch the second end, and you notice you can stretch 2.5" then on the next table, increase the side to side to 2.25" and both ends to 2.25". Watch the second end again. Adjust again if needed.

how much idle time can you have with the glue once it is applied to each surface, but not stretched? how much work time do you have to stretch and restretch? is it a bond that can be reworked a few times in a short period of time or is it more of a one and done contact? I am still learning on this glue and haven't made the jump to gluing the whole project at once. other glues didn't have the working time to allow for that, so i haven't made the jump. king cobra glue is awesome, i just haven't used it often enough to learn best practices.
@therealkingcobra
@therealkingcobra 10 месяцев назад
Hey buddy, you don't have to worry about running out of time with my adhesive, it kind of works like velcro, meaning you have a few hours to work with it, or as soon as a couple of minutes. The key to its bonding strength is when you pressure bond the two sides with the adhesive. It's based more on shear strength than contact bond like normal adhesives are, so that means until you pressure bond it, you can pull it apart, reposition, and stick again. But once it's pressure bonded, pulling it apart again is going to require adding more adhesive, because one side is going to stay stuck to the other side, pulling the adhesive off that surface, so, no need to rush.

Beautiful work! , I have a decent sized table but the base is Wooden and worped in areas : ( , I re clothed it about 6 years ago because the cloth was gone, I had a normal staple gun and my hands , I will not be doing that again. Question , I thought because the wood on the base is warped in some places , maybe a 1mm or even 3mm polycarbonate base on top of that (glued) , using polycarbonate because it doesnt crack. And then a new cloth? Of course there are more expensive methods but ay. Great vid!

Why are you not installing a few inches of the cloth underneath the slate as designed by Valley. That's how they come new. As evidence, notice that strip of cloth on the main support aluminum beams and the remnants of the old glue underneath the slate. Instead of saying "nobody in the world using spray glue that would hold this tight with just that little bit of glue right there, nobody" did it ever occur to you that they can just put a clamp there before stretching to the corner? Love this channel. Subscribed!!!
@therealkingcobra
@therealkingcobra Год назад
You can put 10 clamps on the edge of the slate if you want, but if you install the cloth as tight as it needs to be, you're going to have to take those clamps off sooner or later, and when you do, the cloth is going to pull loose, I guarantee it. It's easy to prove too, all you have to do is install the cloth as tight as you index the stretch, and the spray glue won't hold. They put the cloth on the crossmembers as a shim to match the same thickness as the cloth wrapped under the edges of the slate.
@douglashull3807
@douglashull3807 Год назад
@@therealkingcobra Ten Clamps, you're funny. If it is wrapped underneath, no it will not pull loose. The clamp is not removed until that side is stretched and installed. You're wrong about that being a "lie". By your own admission, "cloth on the crossmembers as a shim" you should be wrapping the cloth. Again, as designed by Valley. Disclaimer: great channel, subscribed.

And do you ever wonder why the cloth from the factory has that white backing glued to it? That's called rayon, nick named rubber backed cloth, it don't get stretched, just installed snug, that's why it don't pull loose. I'd bust your bank account proving you wrong about spray glue NOT pulling loose, guaranteed!!!
@therealkingcobra

When you're installing 66" wide Simonis 860HR on an 8ft Valley, after removing the rail cloth from the bed cloth, how wide is that bed cloth that you have to install on the slate??? 66"-18"= 48" wide bet cloth to go on a slate 47 1/2" wide, + the 7/8" thickness of the anchor side of the slate. So basically you have to install a 48" wide piece of cloth on a slate almost 48 1/2" wide, where are you getting all that EXTRA cloth from to tuck it UNDER the slate with your spray glue??? The STRECH from side to side???

If you're not going to wrap the cloth around the underside of the slate like it comes from the factory you have to remove the cloth that is glued to the cross members that the factory put to compensate for the thickness of the cloth in the middle
@therealkingcobra
@therealkingcobra Год назад
Wrong, if you take and put a rail on top of the slate, then measure the thickness of the rail and slate combined, take that measurement and compare it to how far down inside the table the slate sits, by measuring down from the formica rail cap, to the slate support braces, you'll find out there's about an 1/8" gap, which means if you set the slate in with out filling up that gap, either you're going to have a gap between the bottom of the rail and the slate, if the rails are lined up with the top of the formica, or if you push the rails down to sit on the slate, you're going to have about an 1/8" of formica exposed at the top of the rails, scratching the hell out of everyone's cue shafts.

never put the glue near the corners ! Only use strong duct tape at the corners from underneath. This guy doesn't shoot pool, he doesn't know! that glue on the corners creates a ledge, and the ball won't roll into the pocket at pocket speed... when you put glue like that, and then stretch the cloth, when the cloth moves, it brings the glue up to the edge with it ! and now you will have 1mm of glue bead at the top edge of the corners ! enough to stop a slow rolling ball. Let people that actually shoot pool for real help you! they are the ones that will be affected
@hightttech
@hightttech 23 дня назад
If you glue the fabric right, the fabric won't pull back. If the fabric pulls back, you've lost your stretch leading into the pocket, and the fabric will begin bunching in front of the ball as it approaches the pocket ("sand rolling"). No way tape alone will replace glue if pocket stretched tight. But tape ok as secondary.
@ralphwiggum240
@ralphwiggum240 23 дня назад
@@hightttech I'm not saying don't glue... I am saying don't glue where the ball rolls, or you are affecting the ball's roll... any glue under the fabric affects the ball's roll. The rails cover the glue, except near the pockets. a 1/32" height of glue will stop a pocket-speed ball from rolling in. I have seen this firsthand, I play pool every night for the past 15 years. on multiple tables. Also, the best glue to use is *SUPER 90* spray on glue from 3M, it doesn't break down like the other glues when time goes by and oxidation occurs. I have Super 90 3M spray glue staying put for 10 years
@hightttech
@hightttech 23 дня назад
@@ralphwiggum240: I misunderstood your comment. Sorry. I TOTALLY AGREE, NO GLUE ON TOP OF SLATE. At pocket entry, I razor to BARE slate on top when i find glue. To protect finger cuts, I rather use 3M strapping vs duct tape because it removes intact without ripping, drying out or leaving goo. I have used 3M 90 in an emergency, but 3M 76 is my first choice for the bed, 77 for rails. Cheers
