Not for bulbing fennel, but I have heard that for the flowering/herb fennel. I couldn't find the real reason nor many people experiencing that problem. I guess it is one of those debatable items in gardening. In any cases, I grow them in containers and none of other vegetables growing around them had any issues. Maybe the best is to try it and find out if it is true🤷🏻‍♂️. Hope you won't experience any problem growing fennel. Thank you so much for getting in touch!

The grow bags are 12" tall. You may use smaller containers if you want to plant individually or fewer plants per pot. Appreciate you comment!

You can start seeds indoor if last frost date if not in near future. But Fennel is a cool temperature crop and will grow in mild frost. Cool conditions are perfect for bulb production. Also, you can sow late in summer for fall harvest. Happy growing and thank you so much for your comment!

Yes, the roots are nice to eat, but they have a tough woody part to remove. So it's not as fun as a carrot.

i took the seed and soaked it for 2 days. Then i filled a used flat sushi container with soil, and sprinkled around the wet seed in some soil. 2 weeks later, I have fennel seeds growing in the little sushi dish green houses. Im going to transplant them in small pots soon.

I usually check my vegetables regularly and if I notice any early presence of pests, I either spray neem oil mix or Spinosad mix (both are organic). Fennel is best to start in early spring.If you have hot summers/mild winters like me in SoCal, as you said it is best to start late summer (Jul-Aug) for a fall crop. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

I usually use organic slow release fertilizers depending on the plant type. All purpose fertilizers usually work for a wide range of plants. These type of homemade plant food have very minimal nutrients for plants and you will need plenty of them to be beneficial. I never got a good results using them. Thank you for getting in touch!

I mix my own potting soil (shown @2:42 min), but if you want to use bagged potting mix, Kellogg Garden organic raised bed and potting mix, or Kellogg Garden organic patio plus are both great choices. Thank you for visiting.

@prettylagoon as far as I know they are not the same. dog fennel is not edible.

So what do you suggest? coco coir? It has its own environmental effects. And how about the fossil fuels or plastic that you use in literally everything , including the car you drive or the device you used to write this comment? I'd say they are "Massively environmentally destructive" too. And if you do more research you will see that nurseries haven't found a sustainable replacement for peat moss and wouldn't survive without it. Like anything, we just need to use it consciously and mindfully. Good luck.

@@TowardGarden I choose not to drive a car, but yes of course I obviously have a lap top and yes quite a few items dependent on fossil fuels - although I think about every single items before I purchase. But I'm talking here specifically about peat. I'm afraid you're wrong to say nurseries haven't moved to alternatives to peat - and certainly for home gardeners there is absolutely no need. Home made compost, leaf litter, buying organic manure locally - there are loads of options depending on use. Using peat IS massively destructive - you have to acknowledge this. Peatlands store vast amounts of carbon-twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests. Once harvested for horticultural peat etc, the peatlands are effectively destroyed and yep that's adding to climate destruction - as well ecosystem damage. Please please do look at alternatives - there are plenty out there.

​@@TowardGardenwhat exactly is the environmental effects using coco coir may we know. Coir is nothing but a 100 percent by product of coconut. The processing is also with minimal environmental effects. Don't compare it with peat moss which takes million years to produce.

For example, according to NC State Univ. " Waste from the coconut-processing industries gives rise to numerous environmental problems. Waterlogged shells are reported to be breeding sites for mosquitoes, which can lead to epidemics of dengue fever or malaria in nearby communities (Dumasari et al. 2020). Other effects reported as reducing the life quality of the surrounding population include unpleasant smells and greenhouse gas emissions due to bacterial degradation of the coconut processing waste, a lack of storage space for the landfill sites, the clogging of natural watercourses and the destruction of the natural environment (Dumasari et al. 2020)".
