Great info in very simple words. I sowed two pieces of ginger in two 7 gallon grow bags/ root pouches a month ago :) Shoots are now couple of inches above the soil. I had couple of failures in last years. Hoping success this time Insha'Allah. Keeping finger crossed.

Thanks for the video,Rob. Built my first chop and flip. Just added bluegill this weekend. Looking forward to a harvest this fall. Mostly growing green onions and green beans in the grow bed. May plant a tomato. Thanks for all the videos and all the help. Jim PS Built the DIY filter using 5 gallon bucket from your play list. It seems to be working great. Water is crystal clear!!

I grew mine on goat's lean-to shelter. Fun to watch them trying to get up there. One day I forgot to drop the ladder and had 5 kids up there having a good feeding. Lucky it was near end of season and had roots to harvest.

🤣🤣 Not sure my channel could survive a "Fashion with Rob" segment mate. 🤔🤔 People might start thinking I'm a hippy when all I like is a comfy pair of baggy "happy pants" to wear. 😉 had the same issue with the galangal & ginger in the system here as well. @@davidhughes473 no videos sorry mate, are you asking about the ginger beer or the curry paste? For the ginger beer I just make my ginger bug over about a week or so, I start with about 50gm of ginger (skin on finely chopped) 50gm of sugar in a couple of cups of water (best to use bottled/rain without chlorine etc) I put that in a jar with some cheese cloth over the top and feed it more ginger and sugar daily, just small doses until it starts bubbling and fizzing.... there’s plenty of methods on RU-vid from people making natural ginger bugs... but I don’t follow too much of a recipe, I just add until I think it looks and smells good... then for the brew I use water, ginger, ginger stems and leaves, lemon, lemongrass and sugar, once that’s bubbled away until I’m happy with the taste I will leave it to cool completely with all the aromatics in it, then strain off, and add a good cup of the ginger bug... bottle into flip top bottles and burp daily until it’s properly fizzing, as soon as the top has a bit of pressure when you go to burp it you need to get it in a fridge to save explosions... For the curry paste I just put the ginger, leaves and stems, chilli, garlic, kaffir line leaves, turmeric and some oil in a little processor and blended them down till it formed a paste, then I just add things like lime juice, fish sauce, palm sugar etc until I think it tastes nice. Seal off some chicken and veg etc, add the paste, let it cook for a few mins, throw in a can of coconut milk and let it make friends with the flavours for 5-10 mins and voila... hope that helps.

Thank you for the video! I am new to growing ginger in container and was wondering what to do. Only ⅓ of my ginger stems turn brown and dried up but not all. How do I harvest?

Hi Lily. I wait for the plant to die back here if I want a maximum yield. All the leaves don't have top die off either as the plant will start to slow growth when the first leaves start to die back. You can also harvest small bits off the plant through the season if you like. I tend to keep a few plants in the ground all year round now so we can harvest fresh ginger for the kitchen as needed. If you live in a tropical climate you may even be able to keep some leaves growing on the plant all through your cold season like friends do ion North Queensland here in Australia. Hope that helps some & happy harvesting.

@@EducatedEarth one need to get the fast maturing seeds for everything. 100 days or less. Or grow our native crop. I usualy think trees and bushes and crops like cikoria, comfrey, horse radish and other perenial crop. I am just starting out a fresh foodforest on about 5 acres.😅

I am growing in Western PA, i planted in shallow trays back in February to get it to sprout, it not only sprouted but it grew to 2-3 ft. I am transplanting to pots today as our last frost her Historically is this week. I had notrouble growing ginger and turmeric last season which was my first it's just that in this climate by late sept early oct we get our first frost. I understand i will never get "mature" hard skinned Ginger here but was wondering, do you think that while the plants are still thriving, if I move them to a sunny indoor location I can keep them going long enough to get "mature" ginger that I can store for a brief perior before starting inshallow trays again in February to have something to start with. Im trying to get out of the cycle of having to buy each year.

I think it would help Kevin. 👍 All our plants down the back are starting to die off now things are cooling down (Winter has arrived here) yet the ones on the deck in a warmer position that get sun most of the day are still trying to sprout new shoots. Hi rob I have just found your Clip on growing ginger in pots. I have had a bit of trouble in the past growing ginger but I will follow what you did. I live in Perth wa now after you plant your ginger and water it when should you water it again, there is so many ways on you tube and I am very confused.

Hi Gail. I don't worry about watering it too much until I see some green shoot. The main reason being is that it has moisture in the rhizome. I think it is a good idea to keep the soil slightly moist as all the microbes in there that make the nutrients available to the plants also require moisture. Hope that helps a little.

hi just found your site im from canada and havent triedto grow ginger yet i was thinking because our seasons are only from june to sept if i start them in the house should i use a long not so deep container like a window box and just move it around into the light as the winter changes and when should i start in house

That sounds like a good idea Debra. 👍 They generally start to shoot when the soil temp gets to the low/mid 20's°C so if you keep your place toasty warm you could start them off in early spring as the days start to lengthen.

You can get cloth grow bags at most well-stocked nurseries & hydroponics shops Wendy. 👍 The minerals I used are by EarthLife earthlife.com.au/product/veggie-mate/ The pellets are a chicken-based slow-release organic fertiliser. I am growing ginger for the first time here in northern Indiana USA. They are looking nice and are about 30” tall. Can I harvest some of the leaves to make tea or should I wait until I harvest the ginger. What would be a good size? Unfortunately our summers are pretty short. How long can I leave my ginger out in regards to temperature nighttime/daytime and should I bring the whole pot inside and let it finish growing? When do I know it is time to harvest? I would love to use the leaves and the stems to make syrup and tea or powder.

Hi Sabrina. You could take some leaves now for tea. The younger ones are what I've seen others use as they have a bit more flavour. The leaves of the plants will start to die back once the nighttime temperature starts to fall. Bringing them inside can prolong them a bit but you may not get much extra rhizome growth. I would harvest them before the first freeze, if you get one, or once the majority of the leaves start to turn brown & fall over. I hope that helps some.

You can grow it in the UK Phil but would need to make sure it's in a warm area of the yard or house. It generally likes the soil temp to be above 20°C with an ambient temp of above 24°C being best for growth. I wouldn't grow it in aquaponics there unless it was in a greenhouse that stayed above 24°C Hope that helps a bit mate.

This is the first video that I have seen that cleanse ginger in full sun, all the other places I got my information from said that ginger is a shade-loving plants. Doesn't your ginger get burn in the sun?

It's only full sun in the morning until about 10am thorough summer which is fine. If it was only getting the hot afternoon sun I would be worried. Keep in mind that we're on a warmer sub tropical climate as well. Those that live in cooler climates can get away with growing ginger in the sun.

Does this mean ginger likes half day sun? my galangal, turmeric grow well, but ginger for some reason doesn't grow in the same soil medium, water, and full day sun light.

I always like to grow ours under shade if in the full sun or in a spot (like our deck) where they're shaded from the hot afternoon sun. Just for reference, we're also in the subtropics. Folks in cooler temperate regions might do better with more sun. Hope that helps a little PN.

These are the Jumbo variety that I bought originally from Green Harvest up at Malaney Brian. 👍 It's the main commercial variety grown now so you should be able to pick it up at any green grocers or supermarket. I normally get tip burn due to the sun & have never really bothered about it myself. I did lose a lot of the younger leaves to the harsh sun early on in summer so that's why I like to give ours some shade from the afternoon sun. Hope you folks aren't getting too muddy out there mate.

How much would u spend roughly in fertilizer and soil for those plants?

$9 on potting soil if purchased to fill those bags & under $0.50 for the fertilisers added at the start. The liquid fertiliser works out at $0.22 a dose so over the 6 or so months it will be fed I'm looking at about $2.65 there. SO, All up for probably 2kg/4lb of ginger I'd be looking at $12.15 or $6.08 a kg/2lb if I used bought soil. I'f I used saved soil & compost to make up a potting mix & used the same fertilisers I'd be looking at $3.15 for 2kg/4lb or $1.58 per kg/2lb. To give you perspective, Aussie ginger is selling at $50kg/2lb in the larger supermarkets & can buy it from a popular Fruit n Veg delivery service for $78kg/2lb Keep in mind I could buy much cheaper liquid feed as this is what I have left over as I mentioned. 😉 Cheers.

We leave some in the pouch so we always have some on hand when needed. We also live in the warm subtropics so the rhizome just goes dormant over winter. Folks in cooler or wet areas may have issues with the rhizome rotting in the soil so it may be best to harvest it all at once.

It could be a few things. I've noticed older leaves do start to brown off around half way through the season. It might also be getting cold so that triggers the plants to start dying off as well. Lack of water can be another issue too. Hope that helps some.

I've found the roots of the plants will go down deep (over 8") from the base of the rhizome if the bed is deep enough. The rhizome though generally only grows to about 6" deep at the most from what I've seen.
