this is a good method. i learned that once past the cleaning and soaking for a day, you have to leave them in a mass and pour over or spray only, not disturbing their positions much and that isnt mentioned but its done that way. I also heard that if you eat them too young they will have an overabundance of an amino acid that triggers arthritic pain. so they should be eaten when they sprout leaves to avoid that., when the amino acids are balanced

if you put the towel, maybe a couple to increase the weight, right on top of the beans (instead of on top of the basket), the weight of the towel will keep the sprout stalks shorter and fatter. When you water, water over the towel rather than removing it and water to keep the light out and so, the sprout won't have that much leaves growing,
@Vingzie
@Vingzie 4 года назад
For how many days do we need to put that weight on beans? For like 1-2 days or till the end?
@Emeraldwitch30
@Emeraldwitch30 3 года назад
@@Vingzie i put weights on mine for about 3 days if it's warm and they are growing fast 4 days in winter if its cooler and they are slow. I've left the weight on for the whole time before too but I think they are good both ways and looked the same. I love sprouts and oof! Too expensive in grocery stores. For .25centd worth of beans I make a huge bowl full sprouts. I'm going to grab some soy beans to make soy sprout soon.

This method is much better than using a jar to sprout! I've tried using a jar and it was horrible because they didn't get much space to grow and they didn't grow all evenly. also rising or watering them in a basket much easier than a jar. Thanks

if this was a new idea to you i have to wonder how you are remotely qualified to teach a class on eating down the food chain. i would add to this your ignorance of what is sustainable and earth conscious is shockingly poor. while i am not against sprouts and use em myself i am at least aware that micro greens and sprouts are irresponsible utilization of seeds unless you are replenishing the seeds by also growing the actually plant to maturity to replenish the resource. if we made microgreens and sprouts from seeds only there we would run out of the species in no time which is the complete opposite of sustainable. it never ceases to amaze me the number of ppl who don't realize this. i even see companies that only make micro grees for profit yet market themselves as a green company and sustainable. sprouting seeds and micro greens is counter to nature as it doesnt allow for reproduction so again it's not sustainable you dullard
@lottatroublemaker6130
@lottatroublemaker6130 4 года назад
braf zachland - Do you plant the actual plants you sprout and grow them to maturity to make new seeds to sprout, so that your own sprouting is a sustainable one? BTW, no need for namecalling... ☺️🌱💚✅

Just had a WOW moment. After watching your "where to get seeds for cheap" video, I went to a Chinese store to find what sort of things they had that looked like what you showed us. Found mung beans, figured I'd make 빈대떡 if they didn't germinate. There was a Chinese one for 99 cents/pound that didn't have a date and a Thai one for $1.49/pound that was 8 months old so I bought the Thai one. Lo and behold, I just watched this video and realized mung beans were where 숙주나물 came from. I never figured that in all my life, lol. Wow. Now we have a super cheap source of clean home-grown 숙주나물. The catch is that I hate 숙주나물, lol. It's my wife that loves it. Now I'm debating whether or not to grow it. ::wink wink::

been growing for so many years but still unable to get the kind you buy which are so much thicker rather than thin and fibrous ... I think I remember Sproutman classes back in the 70's he recommended putting a weight on top like a board or something and they push against this and grow fatter ... I love the flavor but too stringy compared to commercial costly ones ... thanks for tip that green leaves = bitter ... I usually like to think the green equals chlorophyl which is a good thing. Will try to keep covered and will try to add a weight. Best I ever grew was in a flower pot with a weighted plate over the top, but somehow I forgot about that till now. Have gone thru many periods of intense sprouting and no sprouting on my indoor micro greens gardening journey (broccoli, aduki, mustard, sunflower, etc. etc.). Thanks for a great present!

Hello??? What do you mean by weighing????? I'm also trying to grow them...
@ooohlaa13
@ooohlaa13 2 года назад
@@chlxe2434 well what I currently do which works great is I have a flan stainless mold, and another identical which is ever so slightly smaller. They have straight up sides so the sprouts cannot escape and grow up the sides. I put the sprouted seeds in the bottom and insert the empty mold into it, and put a plastic bag with some water in it in the top as a weight. Because its a sure fit the sprouts grow into each other and push up against the upper surface (ceiling) and they grow large and long because they cannot escape into lots of room like in a jar. I lighten the water load as they mature and in a few days they are luscious and compact. I always make a very special effort to clean out the hulls at least once a day by floating them onto the surface and off and hand picking. Let me know if this makes sense. Originally it was a flower pot that had a sauce placed on top of the seeds but its hard to find saucers that are right size as the flower pot gets wider from bottom to top. Its tricky took me years to sort out a method which is basically a gerry rig type thing. Hope this helps.

I've also heard of people weighting them with a plate for some reason ...maybe so they grow straighter? Anyway, thanks for sharing. Nice job. So I'm trying to figure this sprouting thing out and this was a pretty simple video explaining it but what happened to the paper towel? Did you remove it? I'm especially wondering because you don't need one for mung beans in most trays but smaller seeds fall through so you do need one for say, alfalfa seeds and when do I need to remove the paper towel? Anyway, not bad video and I did love that you did a time-lapse thing so that we could see what actually happens day by day.

Paper towel will shred or they will grow into it so I'd use a piece of t shirt or bed sheet with a tight weave so they are less likely to sprout through any holes. If you are sprouting to plant, paper is best as it will decompose.
