The only step I can think of altering is the dumping out into the sink. I will probably drill holes in the soak bucket and then nest it inside of another bucket to fill it up for soaking, then just pull it out for drainage. I just don't like the idea of cleaning up a sink every time lol

My family and I love mushrooms so it would be cool to grow our own so this is a learning thing for me right now. Forgive the newbie questions, but can you tell me what kind of bags you use to pressure cook the grain in and where can I get them?
@josephpowers6562

They’re called unicorn bags, you want the bags with a .02 micron filter so they will keep out all other spores but still allow fresh airflow so the grain can fully colonize. You can also just use mason jars with modified lids.

A little warning I had to learn the green way. If you ever get an autoclave you won't be able to do bags that way. You'll either have to put the tyvek sleeve down in the bag as a filter or youll have to squeeze the air out and preseal the bags. I prefer the preseal method. Works great. You get an occasional popped bag but it's rare if you get all the air squeezed out

hi thank you for sharing, though Im a little confuces - you go petri plate - then expanding to grain spawn back - then expanding to another 10 bags with oats - after that to mastersmix fruiting bags and then the cycle is over and you gotta start over from a petri plate/master tube? to keep the strain healthy and fast growing? :) Do the bigger spawn producers do it differently? thank you again for everything you are doing for us! always plesure to look

What determines how high you can multiply it? And once you have reached that point, how would you reset it so you can keep getting more bags?
@archiewebster5034
@archiewebster5034 Год назад
I think you can repetitively transfers your spawn to as many hosts as you want. If your wondering whether you can keep the same genetic running and multiplying constantly, it may slightly change the characteristics after extensive use over a long time period. Though as long as you keep it clean and don't let it over grow, your all good. It doesn't hurt to take a tissue sample of a nice fruit and run it through some agar then to grain for fresh genetics. What I do is just buy some fresh spawn from a supplier every now and then to spread it to more bags, keeping the cycle going.

How does the generation thing work with mushrooms? If I use grain spawn to inoculate another grain it adds to the generation count? If I put a grain kernel on a petri dish and isolate a clean chunk of it into another petri, does that add to generation count? Does it improve the quality of the mycelium if I do that to prevent it from degrading? Does it improve the quality if I let it grow and fruit and then clone a mushroom? Or do I ever only get to use a strain for a couple of generations and then have to make a new strain from spores to prevent degradation? Is there a realistic way to keep a strain I like going indefinitely?

Hey Andrew, this looks great. I tried soaking my grains. Put them in a bucket, spit in it, but I did not get any bubbles. I went to the store this morning and bought some yeast, but there was only one hour left before it was 24 hours. I threw in the yeast, and gave it another hour. Still no bubbles. Also, my water was much cloudier. Should we rinse the grains first? I drained them because I didn't want them to sprout. They are now in jars waiting to be pressure cooked. If you get this and feel like responding, I'm really curious why the fermentation process wasn't as simple and easy as you describe. Is there something I've missed? Thanks for all the great videos!
@cynthiagrier6162
@cynthiagrier6162 3 года назад
P.S. The grains I purchased at my local co-op were "groats" meaning the hulls had been removed. That's why the water was cloudy and they opened when I pc'd them. A friend suggested horse feed, which is the whole grain with the hull. You might want to add that bit of info to your videos to make sure people don't waste time and money as I did with groats.

This is the most hassle free method i've seen. Some boil, rinse and dry the grains beforehand and I think that is too much work.

Just a heads up! The reason for simmering for around 10 minutes after soaking is this. Ideally, before one places the grains inside a bag, the grains should be wet on the inside but not on the outside. Simmering the grains for around 10 minutes has, as far as I can tell, two reasons: (1) It hydrates the grain a little bit more. (2) When one drains the grains immediately after simmering, the hot steam evaporates so that the grain becomes dry on the outside but not on the inside. Placing the grain inside a bag before the grain is completely dry on the outside (but not on the inside) often causes the grain to have too much water inside the bag. I believe one wants the grain to be hydrated but not wet on the outside. When one drains the grain after simmering, one can literally see the steam evaporating from the grain. The steam helps the grain be dry on the outside but not on the inside. :)

I keep getting trichoderma mold it's really disheartening...I always feel like my method is sufficient, I go to great measures of sterility and feel good about my process until I see the green monster.
