First time grow of Yam bags(burlap bags) I started the Yam and Sweet Potato slips(1st time also) in a grow tent. The Yam and Sweet potato were in a clay pot filled w/ damp soil. I’m in the Pacific Northwest so it is not the best climate for either. Wet, cool and mild here mostly. Thanks for your enthusiasm. I really want my Yam bag to succeed! Nice having things planted in bags to move around to find the “hot spot” for your Yam bag… ✌🏼🐸

Awesome...im doing the same thing in Maryland, US. I had some yam in a bag in my kitchen. I kinda forgot about it and a few weeks later when I checked the bag, it had sprouted several stalks. I cut it in three pieces and put them in my backyard....hoping for some yam this fall.

I have tried to grow yam previous it grew beautifully but unfortunately the cold weather killed it. I had it in the ground. Girl you are my clone, I too plant every thing,The only thing that had eluded me is our Ackee, tried several time and they fail but i will not be giving up. Just been introduced to your site and loving it big time.

Myrna James, welcome to my gardening family Last year was the first I grow yam, I got a small size yam, so I over Winter (there is a video up on it), hoping to plant it back for it to continue growing this Summer I love gardening and love growing my tropical plants as they're mind me of Jamaica so much. I have soursop, mango, avocado, sorrel, pomegranate, moringa etc

I live in Canada and have wanted to grow my own yam for years now but didn't think I could do it with store bought pieces. I am definitely going to try this. It will be a challenge keeping it going during the cold winter months, but you have inspired me. Hope your harvest is delicious.

@aahomegardening well done. I have grown white yam from some "bits" I was given from a friend who grows them at his allotment in the Midlands the whole place grow them there huge hills they have. I had okay success the first year very tasty but second year we had heatwave in the UK the grew up the pole but did not bear. My allotment mate he grew huge yam from head could not dig it all out. 🤦🏽‍♀️

A Downie, wow, that's really good Very encouraging to know that it can be successfully done in our short growing season. The first year you did it, when did you plant and when did you harvest? Was it proper white yam or the Chinese white ones, that I was told its easier to grow here, but I haven't tried yet

@@AAHomeGardening I received the small modules and planted them around May then reaped them as soon as they died down in the same autumn. I'm not sure what type yam it was it was very waxy. I believe my allotment mates was a true yam as he is old school. 😊

Edette Official, thank you This yam was planted late, as I wasn't planning on planting yam that year, was just an experience, so didn't have enough growing time Ideally needs 9 - 12 months to reach maturity Wasn't overwinter properly as I was in the middle of house moving I have started the process again this season

Lennie Beckford, thank you I planted as soon as I got hold of a nice tasting yam Will be going a reveal in November or just before the first frost is predicted If the yam haven't formed properly, then I will show the process of how i will be over-wintering - hopefully something will be there to harvest The yellow yam is over seven feet tall at the moment

Cherry Vigila, get water to boiling point Add salt to taste Can add a drop of oil Peel yam then slice and add to boiling water Boil about 15 minutes (test if fork can go through easily) Can be eaten with any dishes you would with potatoes or any starch

Thank you for the time and effort, you have allocated to the growth of various West Indian produce. I am rather intrigued. Assuming, that the climate, within the United Kingdom. Would not be conducive to growing these items. However, I would certainly be inclined to grow, and eventually harvest, these items, if possible!

Eleanor Hunt, thank you for your kind comment Much appreciated I got a good size yam seed last Autumn and I am sure if I didn't go away for nine weeks , I would have been able to keep it alive for it to continue growing this growing season, and would have definitely got a good yield With these tropical plants, it's all tried and error until the day when I finally succeed

@@AAHomeGardening Again, I continue to be intrigued. Perseverance, and the allowance for correction. Have bore fruit. I am familiar with your harvest.. and will make the required effort to grow these, and other items. The yellow yam, is a favourite. However, where I reside, it is impossible to obtain. Therefore, the need to grow, becomes an urgent need. I can at times obtain Eddoes, and throughly enjoy the creamy taste, on the palate. The cho cho, also has my attention. West Indian produce, continues to enthral me. If available. And so, your information, has become an invaluable asset. Thank you again, for imparting this knowledge.

@@eleanorhunt273 Wow, thanks for the support so glad to hear that you are growing some of these nutrients sense produce The cho cho fruit for me before but was too late in the season to mature, I am hoping this year will be my year A nice piece of yellow yam is hard to come by and is expensive Hopefully on your next trip out of your area, you will be able to source a piece The yellow yam also takes more time to mature than like renta and st Vincent, which are both white yams Food security is indeed very crucial at the moment

I think the white yam is the renta yam. It has many names but it's known to me as Renta yam.

crystalh733, I dig it up for Winter and it was just forming nicely Here is the video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ODzHume5Wec.html Then I moved and everything was chaotic, so wasn't able to over Winter probably So it's a waiting came now to see if it will shot back up Will be ablle to tell you either way, by the end of April, early May I will do a video of it's revival or burial

@@crystalh733 thank you That's really good news You need to wait until the weather warms up to put outside Or in a heated greenhouse, as the night temperature is still a bit low Or just try and hold onto it indoors just a little longer until it's consistently warm outside Where are you based? I have few more that I have started indoors as well

@@ShadaeprincessCleanLikeABoss it's best to dig a 'yam hill',and put it in there I do have a video of doing it, but haven't released yet So, basically dig a hole, fill back with soil, this will give the yam space to grow
