EDIT: Watch the Yam Seedling I Harvested • Grow Yam Seedlings Fro...
Please press the thumbs up for this video to let you tube know it is a useful resource for all of us in producing food. I will be showing yam harvests soon, with advice from each collaboration to stop the soaring prices of yam. Yams are cheaper now because it is harvest time. Take action as the prices will rise again in the new year if we consume all the yams. We are all in this together. Thanks and I love you all.
In this video I show what stage of yam is best for growing into yam seedlings which we need to grow a heavy crop of African yam. Also the preparation of the yam to ensure disease resistance in the crop.

This method is new to me. Thanks for shaping. We usually cut off the head and plant it then cook the rest. I had some yams in February that started sprouting and I wanted to plant them but my growing season isn't long enough and I'd need tons of grow light so I didn't. I really want to try growing some though.

I like to see those ones that sprout around February. I plant hem indoors.... But then my window is lapping the sun. It grows till may then I put the pot outside well on its way. True the season is short here as well I do foliar feeding and I don't plant many.

Hello Lillian. Are you Lillian Abiri of QES Ilorin 80 set? This is Nimma Akaiku. I stumbled on your channel on Facebook and was wow. I tried growing yams in sacks using cement bags last year and it didn't do well at all. The roots all scrunched up at the base of the sack and the yams at harvest were so tiny. Please how can I grow yams in bags in my backyard? Thank you
@LiliansGardens
@LiliansGardens 2 года назад
Yes it's me Up QES. You need to put chicken manure a generous handful per bag mixed with the soil at planting time. If the roots were scrunched at the bottom were the leaves still green which means you planted late and they were still growing seedlings. One thing is to cut a small slice off the bottom of each yam seedling when planting to give it a sense of urgency. You can plant those small yams again in the following year.

I was at the store and I had difficult time deciding on what Yams to buy for planting , should I buy the new fresh Yams or buy the older Yams , the old Yams had on it some fungus and the fresh Yams came refrigerated , I decided to buy the new Yams which was delivered as I was in the store . which Yams would you buy? the old Yams sitting in the store for a while , or the fresh Yams that came of the delivery truck ?
@LiliansGardens
@LiliansGardens 2 года назад
You got it perfect as we don't want any fungus and other diseases on the yam. The new ones are surely the best choice for planting.

Thank you for all your efforts, no doubt I've learnt something here. But there are information gaps that were left in the process. To start, you didn't mention what date you did this recording as to understand the duration between the planting and the end end of May you mentioned later and why. Can you throw light on this please? Secondly I watched you adding some white stuff which was not identified in your narration. (What's is the name of the stuff and why's it necessary?) Thanks you for the answers in advance.

I thino the Chunks you cut for the seedlings could further be divided into 2. It seems too large enough for the assignment.
@LiliansGardens
@LiliansGardens 4 месяца назад
You are right it could be smaller but I know viewers will still make it smaller when doing it. .It is better to make it a little bigger than a little too small then the yam seedling does not survive,

Well done for the information. More importantly, you didn't tell (1) the type of soil you used. Sawdust mixed with soil or what? It looks very soft. (2) Having planted them in yr plastic bowl & covered them with nylon membrane, will you not water it for the next two weeks you're keeping it? How often - once a day, in two days etc? Besides, is it necessary to allow oxygen into the bowl? (3) If the soil is not wet or too flooded, will the yam pieces not die? I will appreciate yr response to these. Thank you. Tunde.
@LiliansGardens
@LiliansGardens Год назад
1. The soi is garden soil that is rich in humus. This makes the soil dark and soft. 2. Covering them with nylon will prevent evaporation fromthe top of the soil and I only watered twice a week. 3. The soil remained wet. The more watering the better, if the soil is allowed to dry the yam pieces will not grow, yes they will die..Watch this on watering and fertilising yam ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6bDScB2uODc.html
