Very helpful. Yours is the only one of MANY that I've watched about handling, that advises NOT handling them when they're babies or young juveniles. I only got my corn snake a few days ago. She's apparently about 4 months. In fact she looks just like yours. Anyway, I tried to get her out for the first time and she was terrified. Zooming all around her enclosure into various hides to get away. I was so nervous I was shaking too much to even try to grab her. Eventually, I gently "trapped" her against the side of the enclosure, into a small cricket pen that I had for a leopard gecko. The whole point was to feed her for the first time. (My pet store owner was one that advised feeding in a separate small tub and not in the enclosure). Once she was captured, I was delighted that she took the pinky mouse within just 30 seconds or so. After a few minutes, I just placed the whole tub/pen into her enclosure and left her alone to come out when she was ready. I'm actually an old guy who is ex military police and yet I was shaking like a leaf the whole time. So. You didn't need to know any of this but for your other viewers, I think your handling ideas and suggestions are great..i.e. Maybe not even try to handle when they're too young/small and be aware that they will pick up on your anxiety and nervousness. I couldn't believe the sheer speed at which she fled from me and new owners need to know this. Next time I'll really try to move slowly and calmly (easier said than done of course). Finally. What's your view on feeding in a separate tub as opposed to in their enclosure? Once again. Great advice and thank you.
@mangoidv1369
@mangoidv1369 2 года назад
I think if it’s possible to try feed outside the enclosure, this is so when you reach your hand in to pick up your snake, the snake doesn’t think it’s food time
@mattie9677
@mattie9677 Год назад
In my opinion, feeding inside the enclosure is better. Feeding outside just teaches them to associate handing with feeding time!!

Omg the background thing! When my corn was just a baby I couldn't find her and turned over the whole enclosure. I didn't see any holes through which she could have escaped. Eventually, I pulled the enclosure from the wall and found her squished behind the foam! It's her absolute favorite spot but it is such a hassle to clean if she shits behind there :( I don't have the foam in the enclosure anymore because of that but I gave her the carton roll that's inside gift wrap and that seems to be a good compromise cause she can be squished and stretched at the same time just like behind the wall.

Most animals especially ones that have a bit of anxiety need time to acclimate to a new environment usually a couple weeks sometimes longer. I would wait for this time to pass before trying to handle your snakes. Him running away though is absolutely fine. He's going to have to learn that he can't just run away from you. If it works for him to get away every time he does run he'll run every time. The idea with snake handling is to move slow and always pick up from underneath the snake. Another tip is to move your snake into a large plastic tub container with a lid that has airflow. Give them half an hour to calm down. They are often easier to pick up after having time to calm down in a new confined space. Good luck boys!

I picked up our new Coen snake today. He is 3 years old with beautiful orange & red colours. I re-homed him from a reptile keeper I found online. He is booked into the closest reptile vet, just for a health check. When I transferred him over to his vivarium, he hissed at me so I took that as a warning & just let him get settled in. I did feed him tho, because he was due his feed yesterday, but his previous owner didn't want to feed him then, because he may vomit on the car journey to my house... He was very happy to get his mouse tho & gobbled it down, no trouble We aren't going to touch him for at least 2 days now so he can digest his meal. I am waiting till after he poops, that way I'll know for sure that he won't regurgitate for sure 😎👍

I keep coming back to this video every time she does something new when handling my baby corn snake literally jumped out of my hand today she's never done that before but now im going to just reduce handling from every week to just when I am changing water and feeding till she gets a bit bigger. I done stressed her out enough for me 😭😭. she's never bit or lunged at me so I dont wanna push her to that point of being that scared of me so I will chill out and let her be and just let her get used to me being around her enclosure so I put my study chair beside it to just get her used to me not being harmful and just chilling around her. Ive had her for about 2 months now before now handing hasn't been bad at all she's just been cautious before and didn't really move while handing up until today. I wouldn't want anyone to pick me up either while I am taking my nap 😅😅sorry Lady.
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 2 года назад
If you have had her for 2 months now i would suggest upping your contact with her. The only way to tame your snake is to make her feel safe/ comfortable around you & on you. You can even start placing your hand in the enclosure nearby her. Move things around. Shuffle some bedding around with your bare hands. At the same time your scent will also be all around the inside of her enclosure. Lastly, even if she squirms or seems super stressed out, continue handling daily for 5-10 minutes and up it whenever you see improvements! Good luck with your corn snake 🐍:)

Hi! I have had my cornsnake for about two years now. I handled her more often while she was a baby and juvenile. Since more of an adult, she has been more dormant to hide and such. So I have not handled my snake for a few months now as I just come in to change water, feed or clean the vivarium as needed without bothering her. I am patient when it comes to the handling, and will only do it based off her body language. Is there a chance that my cornsnake no longer wants to be handled as I have not handled her in a long while, or would she still warm up to me if I was to handle her the same way I always have? With patience and time considered ofc. FYI, she has never ever bit me.

around the 6/7 month mark is when your snake should get to know you & know that you arent there to harm them. However all snakes are different, but by 1 year old im almost certain any snake (domesticated, non venomous) would calm down and become docile.

@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 3 года назад
At 1 year corn snakes should be pretty calmed down, however since this was a rehomed corn snake it is dependent on how the previous owners treated her (did they take her out often, were they rough with her, etc). Give her 2 weeks to settle down with you, but dont be afraid to get near the enclosure and open up the doors/lid. Your corn snake will get used to your presence over time. She will get to know you and im sure she will eventually become tame with you! Also- when you say she tries to bite you when you rub her, not many snakes will react well if you try to rub/ pet them inside their enclosure. Go into the enclosure and pick her right up. Dont hesitate, and dont try to “pet” her at least until shes tamed down.

It has taken me 6 months to tame my corn snake I'm still a little iffy picking him up from his hide and use a glove, But take the glove off immediately after and you see him calm right down. The slower they move the more relaxed he is. He used to poop on me when I held him. Now I can walk around the house holding him and he just lays on my arm looking down. My ball pythons were way different tamed in weeks, to the point of knowing I'm not food.

What if your baby snake coils up and lunges at you? I assume that means he’s stressed so I leave him alone but I also know I need to get him use to handling.
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 3 года назад
if your snake has already settled down for 7-14 days then dont worry about stressing him out too much. my best advice to you would be to grab your snake (gently) with no hesitation. Dont grab your snake from above or hover your hand over his head/ body. since he is a baby, use 2 fingers to gently pick him up while he is in the cage & immediately place him in the palm of your hands. be calm but show no hesitation. if your snake is very squirmish just hold him over a soft blanket so if he falls there will he no injury

do you recommend getting a female or male corn snake? is one more active than the other or are they the same, if you know.
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 3 года назад
Theres a couple differences between male & female snakes. If youd like a bigger/ longer snake once they are fully grown, go with a female as they grow larger than males. As for behaviour/ activity i find males to be quite similar to females. I have 3 male snakes (2 corns, 1 ball python) and one female corn snake and i dont really notice much difference while handling/ activity in the enclosure. They are all active and once they settle down and get to know you youll see them slithering around the enclosure often

keep handling him and he will grow to not fear your presence. Be patient with him and handle him often, and gently :)

how long do we have to wait until we can carry them if we just got them and they’re babies ?
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 3 года назад
Since you just got them, let them settle in for at least 1 week. After the settling in period, begin the handling process very slowly. Interact with your snake through the glass, change his water bowl, do spot cleanings, etc. Let your snakes get used to your presence. Just a note, since they are very young it is completely normal if it seems impossible to handle them. While they dont bite (and the bite doesnt hurt if they did), they are FAST! And young corn snakes take at least 5/6 months before they really become docile and your able to hangout with them. Start slowly, dont stress out your snakes and most importantly dont stress out yourself!

I had a friend selling me one of her 10 year old corn snake. We're still getting to know each other but it's fun. When I take him out he is usually hiding in his cool spot all curled up so I just grab him like the big pretzel that he is and hold him firmly against my chest and he just chills there there for like 20-30 minutes, only adjusting himself once in while if I move or cough or breathe in his face. I call it the pretzel pose. He rests over my heart and moves with it. I almost fall asleep. But the other night he got agitated a bit and went up to super fast and rolled himself loosely around my neck and stayed there. He was calm but I could feel him get tighter every expiration of mine and when I had a fit of cough(I have asthma) he constricted all at once. I took him off my neck before he choked me but he was hard to undo! I didn't want to hurt him. I was holding himmid body and he kind of projected his head really fast towards my face. he never opened his mouth though. Anyways. I put him back in his terrarium and he was restless in there. He is usually quite lazy and goes back in his cool spot quite fast when I put him back. He just kept going around on every surface, entering in his cool spot and lifting it with his head then coming back out and going all over the place again and again. He did not seem able to settle. he eventually did after being hyperactive for at least 90 minutes in his enclosure. Took him out two days later and he was back to his normal. Today as well.

I suppose snakes just have bad days like we do. Days where they are grumpy or nervous. My very timid rescue dog definitely has also got these days. Sometimes he is very nervous for no reason, waking in the middle of the night and so on and then he has his lazy days where absolutely nothing can bother him - and nothing of the above depends in any way on having a lots of exercise or not.

i have a question if you do put it on your arm and it goes on your clothes do you need to wash the clothes to not get sick
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 2 года назад
no that is not necessary. just wash your hands after handling & wash your clothes like youd regularly wash them. no immediate washing is necessary.

When I open my snakes tank he always comes out of his hide and starts looking around and I'm not sure If that's because he's stressed or just super curious
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 2 года назад
he is probably curious! if your snake was stressed & wanted nothing to do with you he would be buried under the substrate or hiding away

Lol. Keep in mind he could be thinking it’s dinner time and want to see what you have, or he could simply be coming out to say hello. Mine does it sometimes when I’m cleaning their water and I will leave the top off just in case she wants to come out and do her thing for a minute. But mine is fairly large and I can keep a decent eye on her, I wouldn’t recommend doing that for a baby lol.

Is there any difference if my snake is older? (she's 8) Like do I have to handle her differently of the same as your male snake? I just don't want her stressed and stuff
@ThatsSoReptii

i wouldnt say theres a difference. if shes new to you just handle her gently the first couple of times. eventually she will be warmed up to you and you wont even think twice about the way you are handling her

@ImaneSimps 3 года назад
The owner could handle her so easily and i‘m just sitting infront of her
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 3 года назад
There really isnt a way to calm your snake before handling her. I would suggest you open the enclosure and pick your snake up with no hesitation. Be gentle, but confident and quick. Dont hold your hand over or infront of your snake as this causes your snake to become scared and strike out at you. If your snake is young, dont worry about getting bitten! It hurts less than a papercut. Once your snake gets to know you and grows bigger im sure she will become docile and easier to handle. Be patient and try every couple of days to handle her. Also, maybe wait like 7 days before you try to really start taming her. Let her get used to her new home and then start taking her out Good luck with your snake 🐍!

Hey can do please let me know how to handle my corn snake, he always tries to bite me when I go to hold him, so I just don’t hold him ! But I want to !!!
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 3 года назад
Make sure you are not reaching over your corn snakes head/ body, if you try to pick him up from above he will feel scared & towered over. Start by picking him up with 2 fingers, and without hesitation place him into the palm of your hands. If your corn snake is a baby do not fear his bite. Most times they strike & dont hit. Even if he does get a bite on you, it will hurt LESS than a paper cut (for baby snakes) Good luck, do not be nervous. Remember, your snake is more afraid of you than you are of him!
