Yes! They've been around since our parents were kids! :) I also remember Narni telling us (maybe before before you were born) to grab some stalks & then she'd coat them in sugar for us to eat raw.

Yes! People have told me they used to do that when they were kids! Having cooked with it now I can see how that would be tasty! I don't remember eating them at all. Neither of my parents like rhubarb so they haven't touched it in forever. Wouldn't even try my crumble!

You can get a separate food processor and grate down leaves with a bit of water for a natural pesticide. Drain and put in your sprayer in spring. I think it is one part rhurbarb leaves to 2 or 3 parts water. There are videos about it. It is good for early veggies like cucumbers, beans, tomatoes and so on.. when they come in. Don't spray on any flowering, fruiting veggies or lettuce types.

Why do you compost the leaves are they not poisonous
@WickedAwesomeGardening
@WickedAwesomeGardening Год назад
Not poisonous exactly. You would have to eat quite a bit to make yourself sick. But they are totally safe for compost! The oxalic acid breaks down and dissipates very quickly!

I moved last summer and was delighted to discover it had a huge rhubarb patch next to the front door! It's getting torn up by my dog's tie out though so I'm hoping to transplant the whole patch this fall to a better location! But I can't wait to make some delicious stuff from it this year! Need a good crumble soon.

Thank you for the video, I really love rhubarb! We have some growing in our yard and I usually give it away cuz I had never cooked it myself but I love rhubarb pie I just don't know how to make it I don't think I'm a great cook but I sure would like to make rhubarb pie

Give this a shot! It's super easy and soooo good! Only thing I would have changed would be maybe reducing the sugar a little bit. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZT5tSBiRQ8U.html

Great idea to freeze them before putting them in the bag so they don’t stick.

I cut off the flowering buds at the top and then a few weeks later cut the stems lower for harvest. They are hollow and dryish. Can I use those for anything?
@WickedAwesomeGardening
@WickedAwesomeGardening Год назад
So you can actually eat the flower buds believe it or not! Just the buds, not any part of the flower stalks. Too much oxalic acid like the basal leaves! But for me, I cut the flower stalks as soon as I see it coming up and chuck in in the compost bin. That will force the plant into growing more stalks and send energy down into the root system, making for bigger better rhubarb!

I was told never compost the leaves because of the toxins? Who is right?
@WickedAwesomeGardening
@WickedAwesomeGardening 5 месяцев назад
100% you can compost them. The compound in rhubarb that is toxic to humans and most animals is oxalic acid. While you definitely don't want to inject it, it degrades very quickly in the compost pile, leaving lots of nitrogen behind. Even better, take the discarded leaves and boil them. This extracts most of the OA and you can pour that into a spray bottle as a natural pesticide. (Take that aphids!) Then toss the wilted leaves on the pile. You don't have to do that, you can toss them in fresh. But it's a great way to stretch it's usefulness!

@@WickedAwesomeGardening fabulous! Do you have tips for getting the plant to grow more thick & juicy stalks?
@WickedAwesomeGardening
@WickedAwesomeGardening 2 года назад
@@TheSuburbanGardenista Not yet. I'm still learning :) I just know that you never cut it because then the rest of the stalk will just die and not trigger new shoots to grow. If you pull it straight from the base that signals to the plant that it's lost a stalk and needs to grow more. :)

Nice! Rhubarb doesn't grow well here because it gets so hot but we're working on a shade garden and I'm super tempted to see if it would do ok over there, lol.

It should? It's fairly heat tolerant so with the shade it could work!
