WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

It is a partnership. My wife and I do not always agree, but we have each other's back. From minor stuff like child discipline to more major things like relationships with toxic family members, we stood together and worked things out between ourselves. Works the other way, too. When parents and friends passed or bad things happened, we were each other's shoulder to cry on (and if needed another to help work things out). Realistically, after being together for a long time, our inside joke that we shared a brain cell became how others refered to our relationship, because we already knew what the other's goal is. We make each other better people. I try to imagine carrying both lives on my back, with her as another possession instead of sharing the load, and it seems like way more work than reward to both of us.

Had a freind in LDS whose mother was being abused daily by her father. She took the situation to the church and they not only refused to separate the marriage they also informed the husband she had requested a divorce. He murdered her less then a year after that. Religion in general considers the mere concept of a family to be more important then the actual members of the family, except for the patriarch whose quality of life is the sole metric of success of the family.

It would never happen if it occurred in Utah because it is a theocracy controlled by the Mormons but the church officials should have been charged as accessories to the murder. When a church wields its authority in such a fashion they need to be held accountable for the repercussions. The Mormons and the Catholics need to be brought down down as they are authoritarian hierarchies trying to impose their religion on the populace. Forceful repression of dissent is key to their faith At least the other Christians are disorganized outside of very general, broad issues.

This guy is genuinely terrifying. The example he gave, with the wife being in another country, is so weirdly specific, too. He seems to have missed the point that uprooting your whole life is not something you do because your husband says so. This means losing daily interaction with friends and family- at least in person- having to find a new job (more often than not) in an environment where even if the language is the same, the culture will not be quite the same. Let’s say the husband decides to move his family, including wife and daughters, to Saudi Arabi. The wife has every right not to go along with this, as it means living in a dangerous environment, which is bad, and raising daughters in it, which may be even worse. He seems to think that if you have children, you should just outsource your decision making to the husband. Terrifying.

So Nicol, if _one_ person in the marriage should have authority over the other and make the important decisions, why not let the wives be in charge? You said yourself that traditionally women have had babies and cared for them all through time. Wouldn't that make women the natural leaders in the marriage? After everything pregnancy, child birth and nursing put the body through, don't you think it's only fair that the man defer to his wife? Don't you think her maternal nature gives her the wisdom to make the best choices? 😜😁😆😂🤣😇

Hey! I can finally speak with some sort of authority on the matter! Leadership and followership are both dynamic. There is always a situation when one partner would behave more as a particular archetypical leader while the other partner behaves as a follower, but will defer the role tlback and forth because of a variety of reasons. In fact, we defer or relinquish our leadership role cyclically throughout the day without even realizing it. However, there is a very pervasive ideology in the US that people should strive to be leaders. Stuff like "always be a leader, never be a follower", etc., without realizing that they're a synergy we ebb through in all our interactions. I blame idiots like Andrew Tate for devaluing this.

It seems like Atheists are more sensible with our approach to marriage. Making decisions together takes two. No one is more important than the other. It's interesting how all of Nicol's argument revolves around "gender roles" and the assumption of marriage and family being defined by children. Nothing he's saying applies in a marriage without children. What about a gay marriage or lesbian marriage where the genders are the same? Then who makes the decision? His argument only has weight under the Christian model of marriage, which only applies to Christians. Non-Christians can make marriages work without the failed ideas that he's trying to impart onto it. He has a one-dimensional conception of marriage where his assumptions about what "works" or not doesn't apply to all types of marriage.

Marriage in its current form only exists because of what society extends to spouse, but forbids others. I my wife is dying, I can have access to care decisions. We get certain tax benefits, society treats married couples different. There is a commitment aspect, but that exists with or without marriage. I am pretty sure a root cause deep-dive would find christian politics under all of these. As the HIPAA addresses health care to prevent spouses from taking advantage, and DC chips out the last retirement and tax benefits it will eventually just be "the tradition we were raised under", and likely be gone in the next 5 or 6 generations (or mandated like this guy wants when the fundies get control).

@Foxfire-chan
@Foxfire-chan Год назад
I agree with the religious part but when it comes to the legal part here are some things to consider. The government needs to keep track of who is living where and with who. If you’re going from living on your own to living in a group with another person, that needs to be noted for like taxes etc because income has increased when two people have their incomes joined together through marriage. In the case of divorce you have to figure out who gets what. If people were left to their own devices with no law there to protect people, in theory one partner could make off with the grand majority of their once shared assets leaving the other person with nothing. While we would hope it would be split equally, with no laws to legally bind this, many more people would be facing situations like these upon divorce which is what used to happen in the past before divorce laws were changed. If you divorce too it’s important that the government knows where (if the couple has children) where they go in order to make sure they’re getting the care and education they deserve and to keep track of them.

For centuries we have ingrained religion into our lives to fulfill the desire for community and belonging as well as order and control. We're reaching a point as a society where it's more commonplace to question why we even need a religious foundation for these things in the first place and it's leading to a lot more people rejecting religion outright. Which, of course, is a net gain because it allows us to improve society more while also creating new communities that provide these fulfillments in far more positive ways where we no longer objectify/enslave/subdue/etc. others and can be equals.
