Brilliant vid. I use the Zoom but put it in my jacket pocket, winter jackets are fine but with the summer ones, I start to get wind buffeting noise around 50MPH. Your idea about the foam is fantastic. I might try that but with a Kreiga US-10 tail bag and see what results I get. Cheers :)

Hi RJ, what type of settings do you use on the H2N? Any advice of the amount of channels (button on the top), mic gain (twisty knob on the side), recording format or that sort of stuff?

thanks for watching & the sub! The foam is, like you said, for "a better fit" and of course also for protection. I don't really know, how tough these recorders are :) You just need to look for a backpack which has some suitable pockets. Inside the backpack there's no need for protection against wind noise!

thanks a lot, RJ! The main purpose of the foam is to protect the recorder. There's almost no wind noise up to ~90 MPH with the backpack method but of course the sound's quite a bit muffled. It always depends on the bike though. With the loud KTM it sounds pretty good but with my own bike, the CB500, I always have to fiddle around with Premiere's equalizer to get decent results. Unfortunately I don't know much about EQ's so the result's often some sort of lottery :)

Hi Schaaf! I bought the same microphone (Zoom H1). But Ive got still wind noise in my backpack. So I think the trouble is my backpack? And; what are the settings on your microphone? And which setting have your input level ? And which backpack is that? Thank u! :)
@Schaaf
@Schaaf 6 лет назад
Hello you! I use my ZOOM with the highest quality .wav setting available, input level of 22 when on my CB500. Different bikes needs different input levels, I always have to try that out myself first when on a new bike!
@1TB0T
@1TB0T 6 лет назад
Hope you dont mind me chiming in also. I also use a Zoom H1. It may not be wind noise but peaking, so try different input levels. Even if you can run a set of headphones from your H1 so you can actually hear in real time what you are recording. Ensure nothing is hitting the H1 in your backpack and it's not moving around as all of this will generate unwanted noise. Lastly, if it really is still wind noise, get a standard microphone foam cover and pop that over the top of the H1. BTW Schaaf, love your work and passion for the noise of your bikes. Found your vids while researching filters for gopros.

+Schaaf i'vo bought the ZOOM H1 and i've tried your method (in my last video) but I put it in Auto Level and I think the volume was a bit low(I've had to raise it in post production with fcpx) which is the input Level you use? How do you modifie in post production the audio to achieve your high quality level? If you want my mail is riccardo.fiaccadori@studenti.unipr.it (Cancel this message at the end) Thanks!
@Schaaf
@Schaaf 8 лет назад
the input level depends on the bike I'm riding. On my CB I'm using 22. In postproduction I always try to modify the high frequencies with an EQ to make it sound more crisp. I haven't found a recipe yet so I'm always experimenting until I like the sound.

For me it depends a lot on what kind of bike I'm riding. I.e., I mostly ride Ducatis, and some of the best Ducati sounds come from the intake, not the exhaust, so having the audio recording device in a backpack doesn't work very well. The best audio I've managed so far came from putting a foam wind slayer on the GoPro and a fluffy wind muff on the H1n, GoPro on the chin bar of the helmet and the H1n in a side pocket of a backpack. By using both audio tracks you can balance intake/exhaust noise to recreate what you actually heard while riding. The only issue with that method is you have to be a *lot* more precise in syncing your audio, just a visual cue along with a noise isn't enough since you need milliseconds of accuracy to sync the engine sound. Usually it works for me to have a coarse audio sync cue like tapping something metallic in the video, then that gets it close enough to zoom in on the waveforms and look for the similar engine sound patterns in the two audio tracks and sync them up more precisely that way. You can tell when you're close because the combined engine audio will suddenly become sharp and clear.

Schaaf, I'm using Tascam DR-05, recorder is in the backpack, however 1) sound feels muffled, 2) there's still wind noise at 65+ mph - any suggestions besides trying different bags and input levels on the recorder?
@Schaaf

not really. But you could try to enhance the sound quality afterwards in your video editing software. There are several tools to do that. Equalizers and such. Too bad I don't know how these work...
9 лет назад
Aleksei Potov You could attach the recorder to you lower back without a backpack with belt or tape. Use large dead cat to reduce wind buffing. In my opinion these backpack rigs don't sound clear enough. Did you already manage to get any good sound?

Could you just use an external mic under the seat tail? I have a 2018 Kawasaki Z900RS, a GoPro Hero 4 (yes, it’s old) and a JVC external mic with the JVC factory windsock over it. @@Schaaf hey broski, so I originally picked up a $30 recorder from Amazon. Omg, so much wind noise. Spent a few days hunting down a decent deal on the zoom h1. Picked it up today and tested it out on a few audio clips. Holy cow, what a difference. Just curious, what settings are you using? And are you using the WAV format or the mp3 format? Still learning the quality differences between these too. But its definitely rekindled the excitiement of riding again. Thanks in advance. Ride safe.

@gbapbt 7 лет назад
Hello! I use Zoom H2n, and I synchronize the audio with the video in an easier way! Just plug in GoPro first and then the microphone, and before you start the bike, you clap your hands at the beginning of the video, so it's much easier to find the frequency and sync! Sorry for my bad english!
@Schaaf
@Schaaf 7 лет назад
my GoPro and Zoom are not connected. Thanks for the suggestion though.
@gbapbt
@gbapbt 7 лет назад
No, I just wanted to tell you to turn on the GoPro first and then you turn the zoom on, but both recordings separately, do not connect. Clapping are to show the audio frequency, so you can synchronize in a very easy way! That way I said, it's much easier to sync the audio with the video. You're welcome!
@Schaaf
@Schaaf 7 лет назад
you do realize I do EXACTLY THIS but with the horn instead of a handclap? How is your version easier? I don't understand.
@gbapbt
@gbapbt 7 лет назад
In my case, if I horn with the bike on, it is difficult to observe the audio waves and synchronize in Sony Vegas, so I clap my hands at the beginning of the video, with the bike turned off. But if your way is good for you, I'm sorry, I was just trying to help! ^^
@Schaaf
@Schaaf 7 лет назад
your way would become quite difficult if you start to record multiple mountain roads in one go. Because in this case I leave the audio recorder akways running but in order to safe batterylife and memoryspace I have to turn my GoPro off when getting from one mountain road to the next one. I'd be seriously pissed if I had to stop before every nice road, turn off my bike, clap my hands, then turn the bike on again and start riding and recording lol ;)

Schaaf Thanks!....did you test it .mp3 ? is't a big diference?
@Schaaf
@Schaaf 10 лет назад
Visatorul well, you won't be able to tell a difference only with your ears. But it's important to record in .wav because it's an uncompressed form of digital audio recording. We need this better quality and more audio data if we want to be able to edit the audio recording afterwards! So if you don't need to edit/enhance your audio files after recording you also can use a high quality .mp3 setting!
@McMike

@Schaaf i know this is 10 years old but why using foam if you leave the microphone out? Or do you push the zoom all the way inside? 😏

Would you consider doing an updated version of this video with your current setup and configs? Cheers.

@@Schaaf hahaha, ok. Cool. Auto Leveling is not working for me. I am playing with the zoom configs. Any advice that you can give me?

I'm about to try something with gopro in a media mount and an external rode mic with big sound muff on, mounted behind registration plate near exhaust on 1250GS, have you done anything similar with good results, I don't own a Zoom recorder yet but i do have all the other equipment so just going to have a play with that.

I got the Zoom H2n based on your advice on external recorders. If you haven't already got one I'd suggest a windjammer - it makes a difference even if it's in your pocket. I've been using mine in a small part of my tank bag which keeps it from moving around...but I like this idea linked with your tail bag idea too. Closer to the exhaust = better sound! : ) Will give it a try.

Thanks for the video I wish I saw this earlier. I went for a ride recently and my mic was bouncing around my pouch bag. Also on the levels part I'm still working out whats the best level. I find auto not suitable as it has a mind of its own. Will post a ride video soon! Thanks a lot for the video love your content and keep up the good work! keem em coming! From Malaysia

usually a level below 20 works well. I'm using something between 10 and 20 on almost all bikes
