They say fasting for 3 days activates this process called autophagy that promotes longevity and detox.
But can you activate autophagy without fasting for such a long time? Check out this video on how to increase autophagy and find out!
This is an excerpt from an exclusive Q&A episode of the Body Mind Empowerment podcast. Other questions include breaking dry fasting, how much coffee can you drink while fasting without breaking autophagy, overcoming addictions, and much more

The research on fasting measures the beginning of a fast straight after a meal which means the reported benefits and time scales are based on measuring straight after a meal. In other words, if you haven't eaten for 16 hours, you will benefit from the effects of 16 hours of fasting. The meal digestion window is part of the fast and implied in the research.

The real clinicians of fasts suggest we only move into a ketogenic state after about 3 days, and thereby begin to truly benefit from fasts at this point. See Bucchinger clinic, for instance, and Dr Goldhamer at Truenorth Clinic. They recommend for most people a minimum water fastof 30-40 days! I do this regularly, and sometimes 60 days or more. Other fasts or diets are available for specific people/issues. First though I would recommend to develop an understanding of fasts by reading books like Chaitow (fasting), Ehret )rational fasting) and Shelton (the fine science and arts of fasting). There are a few others mostly written by people from the hygienist movement early last century. I think to know the difference between a fasting state, and a state of starvation helps a deeper understanding of the process, and the safety and dangers involved, as well as the deeper benefits. Basically we are treating the body as a chemical plant, and all these need to be cleaned out from time to time to ensure the efficient continued processing of them. Oh, by the way, the PH Miracle mentions going at least a week on juices (nothing else) to empty the gut of impacted faeces that accumulate in our digestive system from an early age, oft due to mixing carbohydrates and proteins in the same meals. Better to have veg with either one of these as it's much easier for the stomach to react and break down the food. And sorry if you knew some or all of this, but I used to do 3 day fasts too, and they are not worth the effort really when you understand the deeper process. Better to go long! Bon voyage!

@@nialloneill5097 interesting stuff, niall.....but i would suggest a nobel prize winner would have at least few clues re. fasting and autophagy and IT fasting and associated processes...the real clinicians of fasting that you refer to, recommending fasting for minimum of 30-40 days, seem to have a different agenda to what is being discussed here.......

Yeah, Siim, here are some thoughts and observations based on some "biohacking" on my part. I was always in pretty good shape (never overweight). I used to do the lower fat, higher carb thing that has been promoted for endurance exercise over the last 30 years, (and with ever increasing shrillness until it was recently busted as nonsense). So, for about 2 or 3 years I've been dabbling with higher fat (40 - 45% of daily calories). Interestingly, the first effect is noticeable decrease in untimely hunger; that is, the ability to go for long periods of time without food. In short, an adequately fat-based diet promotes the inclination to "fast" (by industrial standards) naturally. I say the numbers never lie. I've done a couple of insulin and testosterone tests a year apart. There is no doubt in my mind that the level of fasting I practice (16 - 8, to 20 - 4) already promotes extraordinary health (autophagy notwithstanding). My, even non-fasting, insulin is less than 1 microunit. The last T test was 894 nanograms / dL. (I was born in 1963). The blood for the last tests was drawn about 2PM, about 18 hours fasted.

Hey Siim. saw your comment at Cole's Snake Diet today & you have improved yr content by adding in yr version of Snake Juice. I wish you 2 would livestream together! - It is a corner we box ourselves into isnt it, we get lean and then we cant fast for autophagy's great effects. I actually had to eat more to get some fat back onto my older woman's body. Now I see it redistributing and can fast a little more aggressively but not days in a row. I would get too lean again. So I use IDF, intermittent dry fasting, as you have in the video, but often for longer hours. We in the US at least have been 'programmed' to drink an insane amt of water. So I usually go 14 to 16 hrs a day before I drink any. Helps that I am a carnivore too. But I do believe in herbs as meds, like that info here. Will continue to do 24s & 48s for autophagy but def'ly IDF daily and 24hr dry fasts each week or every other week minimum. Thank you, one of yr best!!
@SiimLand
@SiimLand 6 лет назад
Yes, it's less important to fast if you're already lean and there's a point of diminishing returns for autophagy but everyone should practice some fasting
@maidende8280
@maidende8280 Год назад
I’m in the same boat, female & always been lean, body weight ultra stable, almost 42 & actually trying to gain weight, but 15yrs IF is working against me, it seems. I can’t go long without water when I’m awake; I’m constantly thirsty (no, not diabetic & consume plenty of electrolytes). I think it’s genetic because my brother & father are the same. We just seem to need more water. Can’t go more than 12hrs without water (assuming 9hrs of sleep); terrible headaches & my mouth is so dry it’s painful. I drink 6l of water daily but only pee 3x per 24 hrs, sweat a normal amount, & I’m not exhaling huge amounts of water vapour. Where is the water going? I think my body & especially brain simply needs more. Surely my ultra high metabolism contributes. Both my parents were shrivelers…I don’t want to shrivel! Or I want to at least minimise it. I think older people with a little extra fat, especially women, look better. But I’ve observed 99% of people bloat (get too fat) or shrivel (get too thin) with age, & it’s highly genetic. I can look at a young adult & tell if they’ll shrivel or bloat.

India will not claim silly Noble Prize is Doodle Prize for Fasting or Ekadasi or Autophagy concepts majority indians follows this. See and learn from indian system of Akadasi fasting regularly. Ekadashi fasting is observed on every 11th Tithi in Hindu calendar. There are two Ekadashi fasting in a month, one during Shukla Paksha and another during Krishna Paksha. Devotees of Lord Vishnu observe Ekadashi fasting to seek His blessings. Ekadashi fasting spans for three days. Devotees take single meal in the afternoon a day before fasting day to make sure there is no residual food in the stomach on next day. Devotees keep strict fast on Ekadashi day and break the fast on next day only after sunrise. Eating of all type of grains and cereals is prohibited during Ekadashi fasting. Devotees can choose to observe fasting without water, with only water, with only fruits, with one time latex food according to their will and body power. However it should be decided before starting the fast.

Secondly, I came across Himalayan Cyrstal salt when I was looking into how to improve brain power with meditation. Apart from meditation, they strongly recommended to have Himalayan crystal salt with Water. However, they said drink 2/3 water --> put a pinch of salt sublingually for 10seconds --> wash it of with the remaining water. I have been doing that but i noticed that my mouth gets dry after drinking water. They didnt say the benefits or physiology behind it. In your video you mix the salt in the water and drink it. It took me a little while to get into fasting. I did two weeks of replacing one of my two meals a day with a pink grapefruit and am Apple. Then I did two weeks of water with lemon juice throughout the day and one meal at the end of the day. Then I tried fasting. Soft dry fasting is easier for me than electrolyte-water fasting. So this week I've just done a five day food fast. This incorporated a water day fast in the middle. Works for me.

@@joseguitierrezsanchez8064you have to know what country she is in. For example I am in Lebanon and this year sunrise to sunset was 16 hours. For a dry fast that's pretty tough. But other countries had less sun hours to they got up to 20+ hours of darkness. And in the Islamic calender days are set 10 days back every year. So next year Ramadan will start 10 days earlier than this year. So people in a normal life time will fast through every part of the year. it's a 36 year cycle if my math is correct loll. Anyway she mentioned fasting dry for 22 hours.

My research shows that calorie reduction can trigger starvation. Also the higher PH of baking soda reduces HCL in the stomach (thus hindering digestion) Another person commented on something important: if we "do too much for the body, it stops acting for itself" so micromanaging our food without the chemical analysis is a tricky thing. I believe in listening to your own body because there are many things that so called "concrete tests" don't even reveal. We may have elevated levels of one thing and then believe that some other thing in our body is off when it really isn't. I.F. is a very important tool and has been effective for thousands of years. Every body is different. Can we just listen to our own body instead of asking someone else how they feel about what we need? Can we have the goal of health and not looks, give ourselves good rest and exercise with some fresh air and wholesome entertainment? That's probably asking too much in most developed cultures. Why should our body's be made to suffer for looks or work or to please others? Where has balance and self awareness gone? That's the best first step in every sort of wellness. All the same, I enjoy you and your videos and learn what I can from them, checking them against what I already know and it is helpful, thank you.

Being balanced and moderate, while eating a diet consisting mostly of quality animal products works for essentially every person on earth. That is not an approach, it's how we evolved. Fasting will make me live for 5 years longer or is it 10 years longer compared to the above-mentioned 'approach'? Is this what we did hundreds and thousands years ago? Are we the same now as we were then? Are human continuously evolving and experimenting whether it's good or bad for us? Are we hard-wired for curiosity? Will fasting improve overall health compared to the above-mentioned 'approach'? Is fasting actually required for optimal health for a regular healthy adult and is the difference significant enough to warrant a change?

Yeah, lately I've been noticing for a long time I've been eating without really feeling hungry. There's appetite, which you feel "up" in your belly. And there's true hunger, which you feel "down" the intestines and is much stronger. When we stop eating so much, it's really difficult to shake off the habits and there's a feeling of "what I do with all this time without eating?" It's really interesting.

The research on autophagy is quite thin... I wonder how many of these claims are backed by any solid data. Water is a form of energy? "they say"? From what I understand, autophagy begins to ramp up when digested protein is scarce, ie after 10-11 hours from the last protein containing meal. The rest appears to be mere speculation and hype.
@SiimLand
@SiimLand 6 лет назад
It's not just protein that's important. You also need low liver glycogen and insulin
@richardbeaumont7960
@richardbeaumont7960 6 лет назад
Siim Land as I understand it, actually testing when autophagy has accelerated in humans is quite difficult. In mice they use some sort of genetic phosphorescent marker, not possible in humans. So this whole avalanche of speculation builds and multiplies and suddenly I am reading things everywhere that do not seem sourced from any peer reviewed substantive research. It's not that the above video is wrong, it's that it seems to be going well beyond anything we know with confidence. As for low insulin and liver glycogen, these should be kicking in 10-11 hours after a substantial meal anyway, right? So one day I am reading that autophagy increases after 12 hours, another person is saying it takes 3 days, and everything in between. So I look for peer reviewed sources and find very little information... Perhaps you can point me to something.
@FeelingShred
@FeelingShred 5 лет назад
Even protein seems to be a myth, since the body has to break down all the protein into molecules, and from these molecules build protein from scratch, it's like your overwhelming your body with extra work.
@chandelie4
@chandelie4 5 лет назад
@@richardbeaumont7960 You may want to check out Dr. Boz. According to her, the point at which you enter autophagy during fasting depends upon whether or not you were already in a state of ketosis prior. From a state of ketosis, it takes approximately 12 hours to enter autophagy. Whereas from a standard diet it would take approximately 3 days.
@richardbeaumont7960
@richardbeaumont7960 5 лет назад
@@chandelie4 again, the research is pretty thin. She is no doubt correct about keto accelerating the fasted state, low insulin, release of FFAs etc. But whether it accelerates autophagy, where can we find that in the literature? Looks like intelligent speculation and it makes sense, but not yet established by data... As far as I know.

So dry fasting...how much water (first w/ baking soda and Himalayan salt, and then just the salt) should I consume until I break my fast, Slim? What if I have medications or supplements that must be distributed throughout the day? How much liquid then should I drink during the four hour eating window?? When do you drink this liquid, since we are not supposed to drink much during a meal because it dilutes stomach acid? And tried a lot of things like 2 weeks water fasting, Keto, Vegan, High Carb and I know what affects my body in what way and I also know that is different for everybody else. If YOU were as WISE as you proclaim your age would have gotten you you would acknowledge the fact that every body is defferent. Almost no chinese can tolerate lactose and almost no swedish can not tolerate lactose. And making claims that need to be evidence based and simply shrouding it off by saying I need no evidence, for I am old, you will understand once you get old too and so simplistic and unwise.
