As you say cleanliness is often overlooked. Use nitrile gloves so you don’t carry dirt and grease into the car’s cabin after performing work. A fender apron and seat covers are also great ideas. It’s easy to drop a tool against a customer’s car and cause damage or leave greasy marks on the seats. A few extra moments of care can save a big headache later.

Good vid. I'm not a mechanic although I do work on my own vehicles. I do thorough checks twice a year and more. Once in the Spring before Summer when I'm changing from snows to to road and again in the Fall when I change out from road to snows. Thanks to your vid, I now know to take it a step further and do more. If anything serious is wrong I let my mechanic know I have a problem, say with wheel shimmy, engine knocks, Check Engine lights etc.. Thanks for taking the time for the in depth inspection even knowing it's for mechanics and not necessarily DIY er's like myself. Cheers!

Make a cheak list and laminate it and have it on your clipboard or tool box with a whiteout marker. Makes it easier not to forget to cheak things out. Even though muscle memory gets messed up when stick or your mind gets distracted.

I tend to check the horn and the wiper washers as I'm pulling the vehicle around also. ...We also have a policy that if any warning lights are on other than what the vehicle is in service for, we don't pull it aroumd umtil the customer is informed.

Very important key when first Approaching the vehicle a visual especially if the vehicle requires some type of maintenance involving wheel removal they dont wanna get the vehicle to a lift and then in the air and then realize the vehicle has wheel locks ...then some or most customers sometimes don't even know weather or not they even have locks or own the vehicle and never knew they had a key or were the key is located...they definitely want to get a snap shot view sometimes if not most times customer have cluttered item in there trunk then a tech has to remove all the contents just to find it which becomes a waste of time when you are pressed for time....Great video

At my shop anytime we're doing a full inspection it automatically comes with a tire rotation. Usually what I'll do is stop the vehicle halfway up, pull the tires off and do the wheel shake check. Then take her the rest of the way up, start the oil draining if it's getting a change, and do my undercar and brake checks, and put the tires where they're going to end up. Anything I find I'll let the writers know at this point. Then plug her back up and put the new filter on, stop her halfway back down and put the tires back on. Rest of the way down, torque the wheels, kick the lift arms back out (the arms being out from under the car is my little flag to myself that I torqued both wheels on that side) add oil/fluids and call it a day. I do like the open the cap idea, though. I may start incorporating that.

Only thing I would add is before you lift the car into the air, put the car into neutral, contingent on the work surface being level, if not put the car into park, keep it running, then chalk the rear wheel with a large piece of wood, then go back and put it then in neutral. Then turn the key off. This will make it so you can move the wheels in and out making it easier to access the brake system and struts or shocks.

Thank you for the video, still a fairly young heavy diesel mechanic and been looking for some info on better ways to take care of my truck. I know it has some issues so I want to do a very thorough bumper to bumper inspection and make a solid list of what needs repaired or looked at in the near future. Since it needs an oil change I see it as the best time to do that. I understand that this is an old video but if you do see this could you maybe make a video how you would go about diagnosing a misfire? I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado 3/4 ton with 6.0 has been fighting it for a while replaced spark plugs and wires worked for a bit and was back again did some more investigation and found I had a blow headgasket did that and stayed off for a while but it’s back again the code is P0300 random or multiple cylinder misfire and using a scan tool just about every cylinder is misfiring. Doesn’t run super rough to the point of shaking but you can definitely hear it in the exhaust

great video, just a couple of things I would add, always shake the car or truck on the rack a few inches off the ground, not just if they have weight in the bed or not, tail gate down what not, on cars and cross over's, shake the rear tires down too, to check for wheel bearing play or loose rear end parts, during the test drive, operate the wipers and washers to look for any streaking, blades can look good but wipe like chit, also, pay attention to your dash lights, if any are on during your test drive, note them on the repair order, also, do not top off the brake fluid, if its low, upsale a complete brake inspection, the point to the level sensor is to let the operator know that his brakes need inspected, adding fluid gives a false reading and may cause more damage than good.

Great video only problem is testing a battery at the jump start posts is not a accurate test. They almost always fail the test at the jump posts I know from being a level 3 Chrysler tech that that better is in the fender well but I would not upsale off of the jump posts
@toolsmetals2148
@toolsmetals2148 4 года назад
@biggbulls799 100% Correct ...The only thing I hate about it being in the fender is that once you remove the wheel and the inner fender lining just to get it exposed and then you properly test it the way it should be done and then you get the actual reading and print out after doing all the work and then producing the customer the information....what sucks is when the customer turns around and decides they dont want the work done or complain that they could get it done for cheaper...my thoughts on it is they allow a Technician to expose were its located especially if they are not mechanically inclined
@PaulysAuto
@PaulysAuto 4 года назад
Looks like you hit most of everything for a GST...don't forget to shake down the rear wheels as well...especially on those high quality Mopar rear ends. I tend to see alot of guys miss this for some reason? The rear suspension components are very critical to an accurate 4 wheel alignment. Most (not all) vehicles nowadays require rear toe/camber adjustments and missing worn rear suspension components can end up smoking a brand new set of tires very quickly after they "align it" with wasted rearward upper control arms or the etc... Also difficult to quickly check batteries and filters...I will always make note of why I'm not checking something due to it's usually outside of the standard LOF time, so consult the service writer and explain this to the customer and see what they want to do and if extra time is needed. For example, if the cabin filter is buried behind the dash requiring removal of more than just the glove box to access it to properly check it. Great video and it's so very important to master the basics as a new tech!!! My comments additional items pointed out are intended for just that, a new tech trying to learn 😉👍 KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK RUSTBELT!

What is going on with those flags though? You seem like a really nice dude honestly, but those flags during this time are just a no. The difference between Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter is cops aren't afraid when a person of color is driving on the street, where when people of color are driving on the road they have to fear cops every time they pass one even if they aren't doing anything wrong. That cop could pull them over, for any reason, and could shoot and kill them for just trying to reach for their license and registration. Have you ever had that fear when getting pulled over? Probably not cause you're white.

This has to be the most Comprehensively condescending, idiotic comment I’ve had in a long time. How is it racist to support my friends, family, community who happen to be police officers, and those of which who are also African American and/or Hispanic?! They are the most under rated and down trodden of all professions in today’s history. People like you who have no idea what it is like to sit in another persons shoes are the reason this country is at each other’s throats. The fear of a normal (no matter what color they are) person being able to have their children play in the street or even be able to go to work, for fear of being stopped, beaten, robbed or shot for the cause of “peaceful protests” over racial inequality..... idiocracy at its finest. Only hope I have is that you stay safe and don’t reproduce for fear of our future generations and their intellectual capability in this country.
