I have a cylinder cooling fan on the left side of my 2009 RK Police bike. I like the look and in the very hot NJ summers, it helps cool it off in stop and go traffic.
I've been debating getting this fan or not. Now that I know you're entire police department uses them, that's a solid recommendation to make up my mind. Thanks for the video
Kuryakyn adjustable passenger pegs, chaps and if necessary V&H duals. Stop frequently for gas, water and maybe and ice cream cone. As always Doc, great video.
Would like to say thank you. I didn't know it was available to anybody. I thought it was a police bike auction only. End of June beginning of July will be in Arizona for my son graduation from MMI. He went in knowing about the doctor of Harley-Davidson.
Thanks, Doc, just FYI, if you have a Thundermax tuner and get it pre-tuned to your components they program it in for you. I didn't have to visit the dealer.
Very informative, Doc. As soon as I save up enough money to buy the $125.00 service manual, I'll be buying and installing one of these ! What can I expect the dealer fees to be for the software flash ?
Doc Harley, It may not work as well as this fan but, here is another idea to consider. Some people take off the left leg shield and leave on the right leg shield to force the air to move right to left past the rear cylinder.
Nice video. I have installed a fan on my '14 FLHTK. Because I already had the accessory wiring kit, I only ordered the fan. Heat deflector can be re-used on a '14. A '14 doesn't have an automatic fan. When your foot melts, you press the switch. It is the same switch position as with this '17 and it uses the pre-fit relais of the acc. wiring kit.
I made an installation error and the fan did not work. After re-watching your video I figured out what I did wrong and now the fan works as advertised.
@@stevensewell737 man ok I wish I would’ve known about this product earlier! Haha I live in NorCal and it gets pretty hot out here. I came off a 2015 with the 103 to a 2021 M8 last year and I’ve noticed a significant difference on engine temp. These M8s get real hot!
As always Doc You give good advice an another good video of Infoe, have a good day it's 15 degrees here today in Oh we could use some of that hot temp🥶🥶
One of the first things I did to my new 2021. Try Glide was change the exhaust and get rid of the converter. That thing produces so much heat it even cooks my leg up front. I am sure the fan will help but the cat converter heeds to goi also.
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson I ordered the exhaust from American Custom and my dealer installed them. They told me they could not remove the cat like you said.
Thanks for another interesting and informative video. I also have the cool-flow fan and that comes on at 280* and goes off at about 40mph or temp drop. I just fitted the oil cooler fan and had it flashed by the dealer. They did not seem to know when it comes on and goes off. I guess temperature and speed, I can't find the info and wonder if you could tell me? Thanks again, Bill
Hey Harley why not just put there fans as standard equipment on trikes? We all know it is getting hotter and trikes are good for distance riding as well a local trips.
While I hear that it helps keep the rider cool, does this product help the engine at all? Meaning, is it anticipated to get longer life due to a cooler running engine and possible oil temp (?) or no effect? Thanks!
Do you think this will help a 2022 triglide to reduce felt heat? I was told due to trunk and fenders it will not be able to move the air away from passenger. Works fine on baggers, not so good on triglide. Enjoy the videos. Always learn something. Thanks for any input.
Doc, I'm at 5'2" short lady on a 23 Road Glide. I have put almost 5K on her since November. I do not have midframe heat deflectors. Do you need those with the fan? The fan looks like it tucks all the way in. The mid frame deflectors look like they will push my legs out, I have a narrow seat to give me a little more reach with the ground. Thanks!
The fan comes with a right side deflector that is slightly out. So if you have a very narrow seat ( great choice) then I would not install this fan…..Doc
Your in Charleston! It is going to get hot, especially slow moving parades. I believe in a fan assisted oil cooler. Clean oil. Idle about 1000RPM ( because the slower the RPM the slower the oil pump circulates the oil which has a lot to do with cooling the motor). Try not to hug the bike with your legs. Knees out helps direct whatever air there is to the rear cylinder. Try to keep moving. This is an air cooled motor….Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson But we have to assume forced heat removal of turbulent or trapped heat means a cooler rear cylinder, Right? I need to find some test or reviews to see if and how much it helps the Rear and the whole engine temp.
Air deflector...They came stock on my 2022 CVO can I use the same air deflector on the passenger side or do I have to use the one that comes with the fan?
Interested in knowing about fans on 2014 Harley Trike. Water pump has been upgraded, fuse is good, sensors are good, fans run by themselves direct current to fans, but do not run when twisting the throttle when on accessory or when bike is running. Does The ECM has anything to do with the fans being turned on or off. I have updated the map with a dynojet map and was thinking that there may be a problem with that map to not allow fans to work. Can anyone help on how to further diagnose the issue? There are also love jugs cooling fans installed as well which work fine. Possible Short??? Somewhere
I was wondering if you are going to do the intake breather mod that redirects the oil and hot air that gets sucked into the intake and reroute it externally so your pistons after a few thousand mile will not have carbon built up on them like so many people do? Also been reading about how hot these new bikes get and was wanting to know if the heat is as bad as some say? People are saying they get over 300 degrees real fast going down the freeway but do not know how they are able to get a temperature reading when the bike does not have an engine temp reading? When I look at the Harley parts page they offer a digital dip stick gauge but the reviews were not so good. Of coarse alot of the info about the heat and breathers are from DK CUSTOMS who sells things to fix the problems but he does know what he is talking about I am sure. He also has 10 free fixes for the heat issues. I am just so concerned with all the things you should or need to do for a $40,000.00 dollar bike as with a proper tuner that will void warranty possibly and the breather mods, the wind buffeting on this model that can be fixed by installing the fork fangs Harley offers but can increase engine temp by 25 degrees in weather over 70 degrees so what to do? Thanks for the help.
Eric, a lot of good questions. You are not alone...being pulled in so many directions by the internet. I have a video talking about moving the air breathers from inside the air cleaner to an external catch can. I don't show "How To" in our videos. I try to present information as I have in Factory Service Manuals and experience. I let you decide what you believe and how you want to spend your funds. I thank you for watching and writing in the comments.
Mine started to intermittently stop working on both auto and on settings, and trips the dash error code/light. Local dealer says something with the software tune isn’t working right and they can’t figure out how to fix it. Anyone have any thoughts? (2019 CVO Street Glide).
Some early installs the instructions just said Install with Software. Later HD revised the instructions to highly suggest installing a relay wiring harness. Reports came in that without the relay codes were being ghosted with no real problems.
Doc. I just bought my first HD, a 2022 Road King. I do mostly country roads and not much stop-and-go traffic. Should I be concerned about the engine cooling or my cooling. The bike is stock except for all LED lights and has the RDRS. I do live around Pensacola, FL where it gets pretty hot. Thanks. Great videos!!!
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson You get a bit of heat but where I live in Perth Western Australia we have very hot summers and I ride in traffic situations so as with everything in life there are trade offs, but I think it's worth it.
Harley doesn't make an oil cooler for my 2022 Triglide. What do you think of DK Custom's oil cooler? Would really like to find some type of oil cooler and there aren't many choices. Worry also about not being made by Harley, if warranty would be voided.
My opinion is this is a two part question. I believe in an oil cooler for 103 and larger. Even better with a fan....This is great for the motor. This CoolFan is for Your comfort, not cooling of the motor. I own a Softtail with a very good oil cooler/fan. No matter how much I cool the motor, In stop and go traffic my right leg will get heat.(no fan available for Softtails)....Doc
Can you test this fan without having the eco updated? I’ve installed this and thought a full twist of the throttle with the engine off would turn the fan on. I hear a relay but now fan.
Is there any reason I can't wire the fan to a relay and a simple on off switch? I've found by turning my jug fans on before the temps start to rise it's easier to keep temps down. Once heat soaking starts it's difficult to stop with fans. I would think the same holds true for the cat.
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson well the accessory panel is removed so the plugins are there but cover is removed guess I’ll stick to the oil cooler I heard it cools down better anyways
For some unknown reason when I go and look at this Part Number: 26800120 for a 2022 Street Glide ST it says you can not put on the heat shield that you say comes with the kit? In the parts list for that part number it says it will fit the bike but the parts list for Part Number: 26800120 has no Part number 14 which is the shroud? I think you are showing kit Part Number: 26800128 that comes with shroud? What are we with newer bikes suppose to do? Just when I find something I think will help so my right leg wont burn up like so many say because these things run so hot, it wont work with a shroud.
The switch has 3 options. OFF, Manual on which is on till 45mph then comes back on at 35. and third the ECM looks at ambient air temp, motor temp and mph and turns it on.....Doc
Doc. I though about that on my 2012 police Roadking , but I was wondering what would do a better job a fan like that or a newer oil cooler with a built in fan by altra cool. What do you think about that ………
The Fan for the oil cooler comes standard on a police bike. It help with cooling the motor. The Coolflow fan here helps cool the officer...Both are a good ideal...Doc
Harley Part. 2020 Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Parts and Accessories. There are several part Numbers depending on year and model. It is called CoolFlow Fan. check HD web site for the correct one for your application....Doc
I have happily spent thousands and thousands of dollars on Harley parts. I rate the 300 dollars that I spent on this at the top of my worst money spent. Did nothing. Waste of money. I removed it after two riding seasons and threw it away. Spend the money on new exhaust to get rid of the cat . That got rid of the heat. 2016 Ultra Classic
Wow, your comment is my first with such a strong feeling against this item. It has been 5 years we have installed these on Police bikes and not one officer has complained. Not one unit has failed. I agree the Exhaust Cat is the main soarce of heat.....Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson that’s what I was afraid of. I had a 107 and now I had the 131 crate engine in it. I’m running @300-325 according the Power vision ET, have not seen what power vision says about head temp. But I have the Harley oil dip stick and after a 50 plus mile ride home with ambient temps in 60’s to near 100’s I get @240-265 on the oil dip stick reading. What’s your thoughts
