Hello Friends,
On this episode we show you how to install a "Rope Clutch" on your mast. If you are not familiar with what a rope clutch does it is basically a one way channel / brake that allows you to pull the line through one side but it doesn't allow the line to travel in the opposite direction when engaged.
We installed a used Spinlock clutch we bought for $18 at Minney's Yacht Surplus for our mainsail halyard and to use when hoisting someone aloft as an added safety measure along with tying off to the cleat.
Thanks for watching !
Fair Winds,
James & Camille

This is really a helpful step-by-step video with nice detailed camera work as well. Hoping to do this on a 1960 Rhodes Bounty II shortly. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the informative video. I sail a boat of a similar size, i run the main back to the cockpit, I find this very helpful especially when reefing if its got a bit choppy. There have been a few times when i was so pleased that I could reef without leaving cockpit. All my reefing lines run to the cockpit. The set up you have looks great, but all lines back to the cockpit might be worth thinking about when/if you doing a big over all of the mast etc . I do sail solo a lot and it does reduce any heroics, or when not solo, the need to get the wife out of bed when leaving on an early tide. Great video as always.

I have sailed boats with both types of set ups and I totally see the advantages of running the lines to the cockpit. I will be leaving my system very simple and keeping it all forward but I will be stoked to install our roller furler so I can furl the headsail from the cockpit. I do not enjoy going on the bow in big seas.

Why use tread repair inserts on newly threaded holes? Why not just bore/tap for the fastener without the insert? Dissimilar metals either way.
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 4 года назад
because the dissimilar metal coming in contact with he aluminum won't ever be unscrewed. There will be less corrosion between the threaded bolt and the thread insert.

LanoCote is a non-toxic lanolin based grease. It will keep dissimilar metal parts from reacting galvanically. and lanolin is from sheeps as i remember fair winds
@mikeskelly2356
@mikeskelly2356 4 года назад
As the name imply's, Lanacote is made from lanolin derived from sheep's wool. It will get a rancid smell over time, but it's all natural and an excellent corrosion inhibitor...
@SailorJames

makes perfect sense!
@jordandegeus5791
@jordandegeus5791 Год назад
And you can find it much cheaper if you look for pure lanolin. It's generally used for nursing mothers to help sooth soreness and moisturize the area. Lanocote is great, lanolin is great, always have a tub of it regardless!

Nice one James, good addition. Those inserts are better than the helicoils for that job and you could also have used rivet nuts. Looks well solid. Andy UK. Ps. Proper sun hat that is

@@SailorJames Yeah imagine a pop rivet gun that pulls the centre with a screw thread that you can change to different size rivet inserts , They are the coolest for refastening riveted things that you want to get back into like wiring covers, and clutches !

Hi James, good work. Can you tell me the size inserts and threaded bolts you used? Do your inserts have shoulders that keep them from going thru the thin mast wall? Just about to do this in a remote area and would love to know sizes, etc. before I get out there in the middle of the anchorage. . .
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 6 месяцев назад
The sizes you need will be determined on the bolt size of your clutch. Also use Sikaflex under the clutch for additional grip.

Great Fun video. If you haven’t already put a gasket on it, what do you think about using butyl tape?
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 4 года назад
I think it needs a harder base than what Butyl tape would give it... doesn't need to be water tight just needs a good seat.

How would you put a nut that high in the mast to thru bolt it even if your mast was down? I am asking because I plan to put cam cleats for my dual spin as a temporary cleat about 5'-6' above the deck and would love to thru bolt em but I don't have ape long arms ... it might work with an antenna magnet to hold the not while another person screws it in??? any thoughts?
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 4 года назад
all of my cleats are thru-bolted allll the way through the mast out the other side so you just put the washer and nut on the opposite side of the mast on the outside....

If you're relying on the clutch to support someone in a Bosun's chair, you might be safer over drilling the holes all the way through both sides and inserting a slightly shorter stainless tube, then use long stainless bolts with locktited Acorn nuts on the far side. Now you're not relying on aluminum threads alone to take the weight. Even the stronger inserts are just threaded into aluminum...
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 4 года назад
We never swing or hang out in the chair with it just on the clutch, whomever is in the chair is holding and and pulling themselves up while the person on the deck is taking up the slack. once in place the end of the line is tied off to a cleat so there is never a time when all the load is simply relaying on the clutch and only a shock load could pull that cleat out of its place.
