I put one of these in years ago, without any instruction. It got done but it wasn't pretty. I like how easily you did this one. One thing I messed up was to switch left and right, which was a critical mistake that had to be redone. Great demo.
Thanks for another great video. I have watched a few of them and always learned something new. You provide a great service. I am in the middle of installing a similar shower and was stump on a few points. You answered them all.
Excellent video...i have been looking for that type of video " cause i had room from behind to install shower valve" at last, i found this one....very very helpful.....and this guy knows what he's talking about.....
Thank You!!! I’m sold I’m definitely following and watching your videos. Very inspirational so I’m ready to keep doing my home projects and helping my husband or telling him how to do it right..🤗 thanks!!
I'll be soldering copper, plus it's a reno of an existing bathroom so I can't get at the back side so it won't be quite as painless. Boy, that plastic waterline sure looks easy.
Great video. I was a little surprised you were using the quick connect on this. Everyone I've spoken to only recommends them in an accessible location, in case of leaks . I just used them on a hot water tank install. They were great, no problem.
Love your videos! But please please if anyone is doing this, wear a mask when kicking up that fiberglass into the air, it's only one step but will save you a lot of lung trouble later.
Great video! Do you have anything similar for installing the water mixing valve for a bathtub? Also, could you shed some light on how to measure where to cut a hole through the denshield/cement board to put the faucet and shower spout. Thanks!
Great video! But I have couple of questions; how do you finish off the fastening screws ( cup washers or plastic plugs?)that hold the stall plum and can you build up a base from plywood for support?
I'm new at this. Trying to learn and your videos help a lot. 1. You said three wraps of Teflon tape, but I think I counted 4 or 5 wraps. 2. I'm surprised you were able to tighten the fittings into the valve body with your hands. I thought they had to be tighter...using two pipe wrenches. 3. That mixing valve looks so simple. I guess it doesn't have scald control (pressure control?), which I guess prevents scalding while someone flushes the toilet. 4. The face plate and the blind hole in the blocking are the only things securing the mixing valve? Didn't see any mounting holes in back of valve, so I guess you would put strapping (plumber's tape) over valve body and screw into blocking...but blocking was installed first so we lost access to that side of blocking? Thank you!
1.I tend to use a little more teflon, 2.I tightened with wrench at the 5:30 mark, 3.This valve has pressure balance and restriction on the amount of hot water that can be accessed so you can adjust the maximum water temp,4. If doing this in a reno situation you could cut the hole in the shower wall the same size as plastic plate to access the valve to secure. In a typical tub shower situation the valve would be installed before the wall is covered in.
Shannon, I'm currently working on relocating my existing mixing valve. The original valve was installed with copper inlet lines, but I am replacing with PEX and shark bite fittings. Typically, I see a straight inlet section of 5-8 inches, which I always assumed was for laminar flow into the valve, but don't see that in your installation (instead the inlet line goes straight into the valve through the 90 degree fitting). This would be the most efficient method for my installation as well, but I do question whether there should be a minimum length of straight section on the inlet?
Hello Shannon, I always watch your videos when I want to know how to do something RIGHT. I like the valve you are using, can you tell me what it is? I purchased an American Standard Ovation prefab shower and it's very thin, and sits right up against the studs. I am having difficulty finding a valve that is shallow enough to work with it. Once I put a 1.5" board in place it wants to push the wall out. This valve looks like it might work. Thanks again for your great videos!
Thanks. I've done a few and was wondering if you used shark bites also. They make the job so much easier and I haven't had one leak yet (in 10 years) Getting ready to convert a 2 handle to single next week. Thanks for the refresher. Also, per the shark bite package instructions, they recommend a 1/4 twist on pipe after pushed in. I suppose to set locking. Do you think it matters ?
Hello Shannon, good video. Not sure if you answered this in a previous comment, but can the same process be used with tub? Such thing as a 4 way push fitting valve?
Hey man great work. Quality over quantity . So I have a question . I installed a mohen shower fixture . I did a quick test in it to see if it leaks and water comes pouring out of the shower head in the off pos. Did I miss a step or is this a faulty cartridge
I would say your cartridge is turned upside down. Take the handles and plastic parts off and turn the shaft 1/2 turn. water should shut off. If you have more questions or comments please use our forum.www.house-improvements.com/forums/
Shannon do you have a video of a complete install of a three piece shower in? Actually what I am wanting to install is a four piece shower pan + three piece sides. Its a 27" x 54" space in a remanufactured home.
Hi, how would you waterproof around a square valve? I am looking to installing a square valve with Kirdi board. The circle provided by kirdi would not work.
I have a shower stall in my laundry room that is tiny and we've never used it (previous owners added it). I'd like to tear it out, but I'm not sure what the best method is to seal off the plumbing behind the wall once it's out. Thanks!
I was hoping that you would show how to measure the hole that you made for the shower valve. I have existing plumbing that I am installing a new shower stall into. I only have one shot at this so I need to know exactly how to measure correctly.
Shannon, I've just built and set up lines for a stand up shower. Is the shower valve body you're using "on/off" functionable? If so, they are rare to find. So what Im asking is how is this being controlled as far as turning on and off the water for shower only?
Tareck Fahmi Riobel brand has stop valves on the shower valve, one for hot, one for cold water. They are right on the valve and each has a screw to shut off its water supply. Funny that every basin, sink and toilet has shut-off valves very nearby but showers tend not to.
I’m installing a Neptune Stella corner shower. Unit is beefy fiberglass reinforced. I don’t have access behind it after install. Would it be okay to mount the valve to the surround without that blocking behind the valve? The blocking would need to be on a 45 degree angle in the corner and very hard to get in the perfect spot.
Ha ha ha this guys a big time Newfie when he pulled out the Milwaukee wirsbo gun I was like what the fuck? I thought he was using shark bites lol just giving you shit man nothing personal
How well does shark bites hold up for this application? I would also like to know should test for leaks while the pre install is under normal water pressure?
+maddyloe They're certified for in wall and underground use. They've outlasted copper joints in many tests. I'd personally use the crimp on pex but none the less, the facts support long term use of the push on type, they're just very expensive for a large project.
i do plumbing but never installed a shower valve just brushing up looking at this video but dont use shark bites unless you have no choice there just ugly. on finish work.
I have not had a call back yet on one. You are correct I actually never mentioned or showed securing it to that block, it did get screwed to the block and I should have mentioned it
Need help! I installed new rough in valve in my house and no now there's no hot water. What I did wrong? Probably hot and cold water mix in the valve. How can I fix it?
Warning: if this is your first shower valve install, as it was mine, note that "center" for the valve means line it up with the floor drain, not necessarily the center of the shower wall. I drilled the hole for my valve at the end of a long day, and measured the inside of the shower to find "center"...which on mine is about an inch and a half closer to the front of the stall than the drain...doh! So, avoid doing what I did, and line it up with the drain, which is the actual center of the stall. Luckily, nobody has to look at this handyman special but me...if I was looking to sell this place, I'd have had to replace the stall, I'm guessing.
I wish I used pex. My house is all copper so when I was hooking up my new shower I used copper. Not without issue. I had a pinhole leak where the copper pipe attached to the mixing valve. To fix it I heated it back up and added more solder. I hope that's how to repair a pinhole? I am worried about it. Shannon is that what you would do? I don't have the wall on yet so I could tear it all apart and install a new mixing valve if need be. ☹️
+HouseImprovements Thank you. I have soldered lots of times but never ran into this before. I don't think solder like brass vert much because the Delta Universal Rough-In R10000-UNWS would not seal. Every time I turned the water back on it would start hissing directly in the area I soldered. That convinced me to drop copper and switch to pex. Watching your video made it look far easier than copper. It was expensive buying the cutting and crimping tool. Plus a new rough-in mixing valve at $75. Still cheaper than a plumber but it's a shame. Now I've got one for the landfill. ☹️
+HouseImprovements That's true and it took me only an hour to hook up the PEX as opposed to 3 hours to solder the 16 connections with the copper. There's a definite speed difference. Some say the PEX gives off VOCs so it's not as safe to drink from. Yet all new homes in Ottawa are being built with it. Fortunately I don't drink shower water so I'm not concerned. 😀
Pipe from valve to shower head has to b a copper pipe to have the best volume of water available Inside diameter of pex is 3/8 your putting tension on the shower valve ???
