Hey guys, John here with realtruck.com. Today, we're going to install the Amp Research PowerStep Running Boards onto our Ram project truck. We have everything we need here to get this installed onto our truck. It comes complete with the running boards, our motor linkage, either linkages for both the passenger and driver side, our motors, our controller, our hardware kit, and our wiring harness to wire up the motors and the really cool LED lights that go on the running boards. Let's get this on the truck.
The first thing to do is to install these reinforcement brackets. What you're going to do is come under the truck and look for this spot. There should be one in the front and one in the rear of both. And we're going to take our reinforcement bracket, we'll put it up here to line it up with the factory holes, and then there's a hole in the reinforcement bracket we're going to drill through into the body panel of the truck.
Okay, we've got our hole drilled so the next thing we're going to do is to go ahead and install this and I'm going to show you a neat little trick to keep this in place so that it doesn't drop down in there while we're trying to install it. Now what I did is I just took a small zip strip or you can use like a wire bread tie string, whatever you want to put on there, a zip strip is easy, simple, and what we need to do is to slide this back in here, and that helps to be able to hang onto that so that we don't lose it.
And then we're going to take our rivet tool and we're going to put our rivet in through that hole that we drilled. And we'll take our rivet nuts and we'll go ahead and insert those. I just use a small hammer to tap it into place. And then we have this tool for doing these rivets. It's just basically something like this and what we're going to do is we're going to put that on here and then it screws, just screws into the rivet itself. That tool over to this side and do this one. All right guys, that takes care of the installation on this one.
Now what we're going to do is we're going to go ahead and go to all four corners of our truck where you'll see this same type of cut out situation. We're going to do the same thing to the other three. Now that we've got our rivet nuts in place and everything secure, we got all the other three done. The next thing we need to do is, you can see that bracket that we put in there, that lip that we had our zip tie through, we need to push that back out of the way so that our linkages don't hit it and it doesn't interfere with them.
Okay, I've got that out of the way. So, next thing we're going to do is get ready to start putting our linkages on. We have here our handy dandy little template that comes with our kit and what this is basically for, just follow the instructions on the template. It tells you where and how to bend this to make it fit. And what this is for is to help us with our bolts that we need to put in because on some trucks you need to drill some holes in this bottom lip in order for the linkage to actually fit on it, so I'm going to show you how you would do this.
Go ahead and follow the bend instructions and then line it up on your rivet nuts and you'd go ahead and pull it over around in place, and you can see how when you bend it, it fits to the body of the vehicle. And then on the other side of this there are some markings on here that tell you where to drill the holes. Fortunately for us, we got lucky and this truck already has the holes in the body, pinched lip, so we don't have to drill anything, but I wanted you guys to know how to use this thing in case your truck didn't have these. 866-554-0581 Free shipping for orders over $100!

After doing the install myself. Here is a huge TIP. Unlike in this video, when drilling a hole for the rivet, place that black bracket in front, slide the two nutserts into place through the bracket. This will 100% align the hole you need to drill. Then install the bracket behind the sheet metal, again slide the nutserts into place to align everything. Do the rivet, than the nutserts. No hammering needed.

Would have been nice to show how exactly you wired the steps to come down and return back up. Maybe show the harness you spliced into or how you wired it into the truck....

Man, to have a truck lift makes this job sooooo much easier.

Donny - I honestly don't know. I haven't looked into it much, but if you really want to do this, take a look under a Chevy Avalanche of the same year and compare the backside of the rockers and hole locations to your Ridgeline. Might be able to make the ones for the Avalanche work. Wiring may be different too so you would need to find the trigger wires on your Honda to wire in correctly. Good Luck and hey let us know if this works for ya.

I didn't see you adding any rust-proofing to any of the surfaces you cut. Is it not an issue to be concerned over?

I have a honda ridgeline and was wondering if you know if these could work on it. I dont find them on any website to fit it so im sure they would have to be modified to fit the ridgeline. Your input?

If you have the adapter for the OBII do you have to do all the wiring and disassembly under the dash or is it more plug and play?

Hey guys, using your video, although not exactly my model (2015 Dodge Ram 2500), it was a great help. You should update for the plug and play model. Thank you.
@Realtruck

AA_ Slautter The plug and play model installs the same way. The only difference is that you don't have to hook up the trigger wires. It just plugs in to your OBDII Connector under the dash.

Aaron Thibert We have the Amp Powerstep installed on a lot of trucks here around the office. Beststop is a new brand so we have not yet been able to put them to the test.

Awesome video, thanks! Can't afford these buggers but love the option. Plus, I chose a solid, in-place bar to prevent idiots in parking lots from dinging my doors! These don't stop that due to retracting, but they are freakin' cool.

What if you already have the factory mopar steps and have those nuts already installed for the bolts? Can you use those?

RT, you mentioned the plug and play in a previous post below. Is the plug and play in lieu of splicing the purple wires?
@Realtruck
@Realtruck 9 лет назад
***** That is correct. It plugs right into your OBDII connector under the dash, unfortunately, this is not available for all applications.
@FireSneaks83
@FireSneaks83 9 лет назад
Thanks. I actually went ahead and ordered the kit with the plug and play. Looks there's only 2 purple wires and once you run them through the firewall, you splice them into the plug and play connector. Simple enough. Just got my kit and putting them on tomorrow. Thanks for the video, very helpful. Must have watched it half a dozen times 👍🏼

+Jeff MacConnell they work great. We have several vehicles here in ND using these and we have some winters here. Brrrrrr!

I would of liked watching you put the wired through the firewall and see exactly how you did it and how difficult it is
@Realtruck
@Realtruck 7 лет назад
southsidedoug no worries. I can tell you. The best thing to do is to try and find a plug or opening in the firewall and run it right through there. If there aren't any you can punch through where the steering column goes through. This method is much more difficult, but it does work.
