When drilling through walls, always drill at a slight angle so the hole on the inside is higher than the hole on the outside. That way, you don't get water leaking inside.

Fitted one myself a few days ago. I removed the metal brackets and screwed straight to the wall using four screws and plugs. The hardest part of all (if anything) was finding a drill bit long enough to go through two cores of brick and plasterboard into my kitchen. I ended up with a high quality 400mm SDS Drill bit and it went through very smoothly. Works a dream. Just need to affix a grommet to the cable inside to tidy it up a little.

@@helenclayton8259 I just removed the socket and fed the wires through the wall and reconnected it all back up as before. In the outside box I fed the wires down through the waterproof grommet and into the wall. Nothing particularly difficult about any of it. When I switch it on I do need the press the switch on the breaker in to get it all to work as it doesn't come on right away otherwise. I currently use mine to power the stuff in my shed - light, power tools and compressor - with no issues.

These sockets are aimed at the DIY market. By opening the unit up you could destroy the IP rating and possibly the manufactures guarantee. For the people who said they have removed the clips and screwed the box directly to the wall the holes where the screws pass through the box need to be sealed against water penetration to keep the IP rating. The cable enters the box through a IP rated gland and yours needs to be tightened up a little, remember it’s plastic so don’t over tighten it or cross thread it. It should not rotate like yours does maybe a small blob of silicone around the thread will help seal the gland. Also as someone else mentioned when you drill the cable hole through the wall drill at a slight upward angle to prevent water tracking up the hole around the cable. Again silicone the hole around the cable to reduce the possibility of water penetration.

You can remove the two brackets from the back, use those holes to screw the socket on the wall. I would then have drilled the hole inside the middle of the plastic box then fed the cable straight in so there is no wires hanging out, finally i would silicon the whole box around to stop any water. P. S you can also silicone the hole inside stop any spiders getting in or just fit a grommet.

All the dislikes must be from electricians losing their £60 call out fee and £80 per hour rate. I removed the metal keyholes brackets and then fixed the box using 4 screws. As soon as i saw the metal brackets I envisioned the box wobbling about all the time, so wanted to make it a more permanent fix. Its rock solid with 4 screws and easy enough to remove the metal brackets. I then dabbed some clear silicone over the heads of the screws and popped the rubber seals over the top of them to make it totally weather proof.

I'd rather pay £80 and sleep safe. The electrician will test the circuit to ensure the entire circuit is operating correctly. You have no idea if there's a hidden fault your not aware of. There's a reason electrician's take 4 years to qualify and have up to date wiring regs qualification, competent person schemes, liability insurance's etc Videos like this by unqualified people are plan dangerous. Hey dude, I like the install. I'm a handyman in Birmingham and I've installed a few of these for friends & family. I noticed that you never drilled the drainage hole open, it's best practice to do that just incase the waterproof seal fails and water does get into the back of the socket.

Those mounting brackets can be removed, you need to remove the 4 black covers visible in your video to access the screw heads. Once removed the holes can be used for flush mounting the unit. I've used some clear silicone and tap washers to prevent water ingress, also advisable to run a bead of silicone around the unit where it meets whatever it's screwed to. Good review by the way.

Interesting video for a diy - er , but surely according to regs a garage , shed or outhouse should be wired with a rcd protected circuit anyway , so wouldn't a second one be a little pointless , perhaps its to protect the woefully undersized cable , as potentially the double socket could be subject to a 6kw loading [ 3kw per plug ] . I guess its ok for a lawnmower but in my opinion not really the thing to do . It begs the question , does it comply with the relevant B.S. safety tests I wonder ?

If you open the plug back up the 4 black covers inside, remove them it will show screws for the brackets if so remove the brackets and put your screws into the wall through the case, it looks like there will be a blanking plug in the middle of the socket inside, remove that and feed the wires from the back then lastly blank off the bottom. Just watched another video and he bough just a box and it looked the same as this one just without brackets

IP65/66 usual standard is PVC. Metal clad wont do much good for outdoor use due to it getting rusted and weathered from the elements. Regular checks on its rubber strips and replace when needed will guarantee its life extension.

There are loads of articles on the web or vids on Google showing you how to do a spur off a ring main. Main considerations for an exterior socket are: - adding double pole isolator between ringmain socket and spur so that you can isolate the exterior socket if it becomes damaged or trips due to water ingress. - you angle the hole downward from inside to out so if you do get water ingress it doesn’t make its way to the isolator. - you put the T&E cable from isolator to exterior socket in some form of trunking (I used 25mm barrier pipe - it was snug). And yes, I completed the project a few weeks ago. Took a few hours but pleased with the result.

Good video but i would have removed the brackets and used the holes to fit direct to the wall then put the cable through the the back of the box thus eliminating any unsightly cable showing and making the box more secure. Also always drill your holes at a slight angle so that the inside hole is slightly higher than the outside hole this stops any water ingress. A quick note: if you drill out the drain hole in these boxes then you compromise the ip rating of the product, these must only be drilled out in certain circumstances always read the information leaflet.
@zedman442
@zedman442 7 лет назад
One thing to note, if you have an RCD protected consumer unit, you don't really want to add another RCD protected plug into it, can cause problems with tripping etc. Nice review though and useful for people to add external sockets, since it's just an extension lead really. The design is a bit naff, I'd have taken those bracket off and screwed it straight to the wall and sealed up. Would also run the cable straight out the back through the wall, neater too, it works either way.
@GeekStreet

@leopold7562
@leopold7562 6 лет назад
Is that right about the RCD plugs? I'd always used them when I was working in the garden using an extension lead, I'd always plug one into the extension and then plug the tool into that. It might explain this, though, and I'd appreciate it if you could tell me because it's bugged me for ages: I was using a hedge trimmer when I accidentally chopped right through it's power cable, but when I went inside I noticed all the sockets in the house had been tripped by the RCD in the consumer unit, but the RCD I'd plugged the trimmer into hadn't tripped. Could it be something to do with what you said, or is it simply that the RCD in the consumer unit was more sensitive to the earth leak?
@twoshedsjackson6478

If you don't need one, why is it included in the pack? Do the instructions say that it shouldn't be used if your consumer unit has similar protection?

Frogmella Slob I think it's there for those people who have the old style fuse boxes, rather than the modern consumer units with built in RCD protection. Yes should be fine with that, depending on the size of the plug. I suggest buy it but don't install make sure the plug fits and you can close. If all good then install.

The socket comes with a RCD plug ,so if you check out the beginning ,he unpacks the socket ,this is for people that do not want to wire into mains . The best was is an RCD outside socket ,he has a socket the other side of the wall , some trunking or 20 mm plastic tube down the inside of the garage ,wire into socket . Job done

@johndickinson2879
@johndickinson2879 6 лет назад
Absolutely right Mark. I bought the same socket from Amazon for less than a tenner without the brackets, cable and RCD. It is mounted directly to the wall and I have cut out the centre knockout cable entry so the cable isn't exposed. It's a very neat job. No need for the RCD as there is one built into the consumer unit.

Should've went through middle hole and drilled through 4 holes in box to wall. You never earthed connector to box

The cable had an earth in it so is terminated back into the rcd socket. But agreed should gone via middle so no exposed cables.

@alanjones3873
@alanjones3873 5 лет назад
Only recently come across these videos and like the range. This one is confusing as being prewired suggests DIY use but if it is “ installed” ie needs use of a tool, it must be installed by a Qualified electrician if it is outside ( as it is sold for). So having to fit the plug makes it an illegal installation. If the plug was pre fitted it would be an extension lead !

Clearly you have no experience with electrics and you should not be Advising anybody on your RU-vid channel, so have no need or do not need to open the socket in order to install it hence why it hangs on the wall, it is for a DIY install!

@MrDegsy69
@MrDegsy69 5 лет назад
Jono Smallridge the product itself was pretty shit! That dopey hook on bracket is just asking to knocked off the wall. Any decent self respecting unit would have permanently screwed flush mounting against the wall with a concealed tamper proof inlet hole to allow cable entry.
@davidtimperley4241
@davidtimperley4241 3 года назад
I won't comment on the errors when you installed a consumer unit in your garage, but the C/U had an RCD as the main isolator so you did not need a plugin RCD for your outside socket and again NO electrical testing to make sure the install is safe and the earthing arrangements are correct. DIYers please stop messing with electricity as it can kill. plumbing goes wrong you wet - electric goes wrong you get to be dead.

Rough as fuck that. Fire risk written all over it as your clearly not qualified to carry out electrical work. T&E on show outside with no protection, no mention of any manufacturers torque settings or testing for dead. Nothing mentioned about testing the install for safe operation afterwards? At least carry out a Zs test. Only a matter of time before someone's house burs down following your advice
