I realize this is 4 years old but the video really helped me out! Im doing the same thing to my boat. You do an good job explaning every step where as others skip over the details!!!!!!!! Thanks alot for helping me out.

Decent video. Goes into more detail on a specific topic (carpeting your plywood decking with hatches) than others have time for. Short and to the point skipping unnecessary dialogue &video. I've just started watching these fishing & boating videos, mostly through searches & suggested, since I've just started getting into it. Went so subscribe and realized I already was, which means you're doing pretty awesome.

Hey Ryan... it's looking fantastic! Love it! I am planning to do the full carpet on my Stratos one day down the road, and one thing that is important to remember is the grain when carpeting storage compartment doors/hatches/etc. It's more noticeable with some carpet than others. Also, I think the only reason the adhesive manufacturers say to not use on painted surfaces is because the carpet will ultimately only be as strong as the weakest bond. (The paint to the primer, the primer to the wood, etc.) Since you did all that work yourself, I don't think you'll have much to worry about.
@fireantfishing
@fireantfishing 7 лет назад
Is there a certain way your supposed to have the grain? I made sure to lay all mine the same way so that when its finished it won't look weird in some spots haha that wouldn't be good. i did notice that at the front when i applied it straight to the aluminum, it had a darker tone to it. the only reason i could think that it looks like that is because I'm using the white paint on the wood that might somehow make it look brighter? Thanks for the tip! i figured it was more of a way to save their butts if they needed to
@rodfather_bass_fishing
@rodfather_bass_fishing 7 лет назад
With certain colors there will be a color differential at certain angles if the grain isn't uniform among all the separate pieces. For example, if the carpet grain runs North and South, but then the rod locker door grain runs East-West, the rod locker might look darker or lighter depending on what angle you are viewing it from. And you're exactly right... the glue company is just covering their butt, and I'm pretty sure you won't have any issues with yours.

Nice job. I am begging my Tracker 1542 this month. By the way. Use stainless steel staples. Carpet will hold moisture against the staples and they will rust in a season or two.

Have you sourced your hinges yet? I need some quick. I"m trying to get mine ready for a maiden voyage this weekend, wrapping a bunch of little things up. But I need hinges!! lol Lopez' videos are great, but would be nicer if he included links for some of the common things he uses. Once you find something that works good (and is affordable), it would save others from having to do the research....

The carpet adds 1/4" to every side? Dang... wasn't figuring it would be that much. That's been one of the biggest questions I've had about mine. Yours is looking good though !!
@fireantfishing
@fireantfishing 7 лет назад
i think I'm going to even take off another 1/8 of an inch, did some testing and i feel comfortable taking more off
@ronskayakingandfishing414
@ronskayakingandfishing414 7 лет назад
Yep, easy 1/4" each side. I did a test run of a small deck piece just today, didn't glue the carpet but stretched it tight and ran a few staples in back. Piece was then 1/2" longer (because of the 1/4" each side). I went ahead and cut the board to what you said, it's going to fit perfect. I"m going to have to go back now and trim a few other pieces I had cut, they'll be too big the way I cut them originally. This whole carpet thing was a big unknown for me. I"m having a blast, just wish I had more time to work on it. I'm ready to be on the water !!
@fireantfishing
@fireantfishing 7 лет назад
The carpet is my favorite thing to do. thats when i start feel like i can see it all coming together. just an FYI i did take off another 1/8" today, just to make myself more comfortable about it. Have you been on the tiny boat nation Facebook page? We have been getting a lot of project pics on there.
@ronskayakingandfishing414
@ronskayakingandfishing414 7 лет назад
I can see that. Just doing that little test run with the carpet yesterday was exciting, it looked really cool sitting in the boat. Perfect fit and looked nice. My concern was never having done it before, but especially not feeling confident with how much room the carpet would occupy. The 1/4" every side (and maybe even another 1/8") was exactly what I needed to know. I just now did the "join group" thing over on FB at tiny boat nation. I'll have some pics to upload soon once I'm approved.

Hey man looking into getting some offset piano hinges for my build and need to know how thick the carpet is when pressed down. 1/8"? That's what I'm hoping for. I know some carpet will be thicker than others, I think in going with tan carpet from cabelas cuz it matches my exterior color. I'm using 1/2" wood so the thickness of the carpet will tell me what size hinge to get
@fireantfishing
@fireantfishing 7 лет назад
azburdette2588 I cut 1/8 off on my hatch doors and they fit but still a little tight so I took another 1/8 off, hope that helps

FIREANT FISHING I went to lowes and they have it for $5 something 12ft x 1ft. It's actually the cheapest I've seen online or in stores. I work at Bass Pro and it's cheaper at Lowes then with my 15% discount at Bass Pro might not be the same quality!

question? I'm looking into buying my first jon boat and I want to convert it to a bass boat. the boat I'm interested In is 12-14ft and I'm going to fish with 2-3 of my buddies occasionally and I don't want to much in it I would just like to have a couple compartments and maybe a rod storage as well and I would like to add carpet and a trolling motor. is that a good size and would it hold 1-4 people? also what would the average cost for a build like this be? and is there anything youd recommend I do or look into? thanks any info is greatly appreciated
@InformationUnavailable
@InformationUnavailable 7 лет назад
A lot is going to depend on your hull type. A v-hull will be wider, and thus can hold more overall weight but will have a deeper draft (how low it sits in the water), but a smoother ride in choppy water. A flat bottom has a shallower draft so you can get into more places without bottoming out, will have a rougher ride in chop, and can generally hold less weight. With that being said this answer will focus on flat bottom since it is generally the more popular option. A 12 footer with a deck system would be a 1 man monster. I would really be hesitant to fish more than one fully grown adult out of it. A 14 foot is the sweet spot for price vs function. That would comfortably fish 2 fully grown adults, but once again the wider the better. If you can get one wide enough 36"+ it should be able to fish 3 guys of average size. And of course you have the 16', aka the Tiny Boat Yacht. You wont have much weight concern with a 16' as long as you stay reasonable. Always make sure to research any potential buy to make sure that it is going to meet your needs.

comming out nice bro i use very little carpet adhesive and 1/2"smaller fir hatches works great no worries lol how are u gonna attach the hatch henges are they gonna be recessed and if so are u gonna attach em strait to the wood???
@fireantfishing
@fireantfishing 7 лет назад
I really really really would like to have recessed hinges. I can't tell you how many hours i have put into just trying find some that will work. i haven't been able to find anything, so as of right now i am going to use a regular hinge on top of the deck and paint it the color of the carpet. its not really the way i want to go but i don't think i have much of another option
@BubbaBass
@BubbaBass 7 лет назад
The way i did mine was i put a piece of aluminum angle and boltes it flush with the edge of hatch and were hatch will connect so u screw to aluminum and not jus wood..also the andle helps keep hatch doors from bowing
@fireantfishing
@fireantfishing 7 лет назад
ohh i see..i might be able to make that work. you still mounted them on top though right? and did you run the aluminum the whole width of the hatch or just at the hinge?
@BubbaBass
@BubbaBass 7 лет назад
FIREANT FISHING i ran aluminum whole length of the hatch on both sides henge side and front of hatch to keep from bowing...i also ran a piece of aluminum on the deck were the other side of hatch will attach
@BubbaBass
@BubbaBass 7 лет назад
FIREANT FISHING jus cut hatch edge wat ever thickness your aluminum is...in my case the aluminum was 1/8 thick x 1'1/4 angles... i cut wood 1/8 x1' 1/4 on top so wood will flush with angle...jus adjust ur skill saw accordingly...the n use bolts and lock nuts every 6" make sure u cut hatch 1/8 smaller or u will be adding 1/8 to it...also use a bit and recess bolt holes in aluminum so bolts sit flush on aluminum...do the same to wood on bottom were nut will sit but only bout half thickness of the nut cuz when u tighten the nut it will sink into wood the jus grind off the rest of thread flush with wood

1/8" did from lower or home depot. tried some of the lower dia aluminum and it didn't seem strong enough to me
@tjsweeney1613
@tjsweeney1613 7 лет назад
FIREANT FISHING was that angle aluminum or just flat aluminum.
@fireantfishing
@fireantfishing 7 лет назад
I used both, same diameter. in order to rivet the angled pieces, i needed to connect them on the bottom, which lowered them so to raise it again i added the flat piece on top. that way my wood deck would sit flat across the whole frame

i would look into something a little bigger if your going to have that many people in it. i for sure wouldn't go smaller than a 14. also get something as wide as possible. with all the human weight in there, i wouldn't add much at all. decks might not be a good idea either in a 14'. cost just depends on how fancy your build is i guess? if your not going to add much then the cost will be low. aluminum is light and expensive, wood is cheap and heavy. to be honest it makes me a little nervous having that many people in there. 14 feet sounds big but gets small fast when adding things and doing a conversion. hope some of this helps, you can also try asking on tiny boat nation Facebook page and see if others might have another way to go about it all. i hope this helps some
@ronskayakingandfishing414

1-4 people? Are they kids or something? I"m converting a 15 footer and I don't think I'd even be taking 3 adults. Of course, I'm 215 pounds or so. Three 200 pound guys is 600 pounds.... max weight for my boat is 700, and with multiple batteries, a big trolling motor, decking and etc... No way.
