How to install the Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines Unofficial Patch on Steam Deck!!!

-game Unofficial_Patch "add this to your launch options in Steam!"
I decided to upload a small tutorial for those of you trying to get this game to work with the unofficial patch by Wesp5. I haven't found a lot of tutorials on this but put this video up there with the few available. I hope this helps y'all out!
Update: 6/18/2024
Some of y'all are reporting that the new versions of the patch are not compatible with the current Steam version of the game. Thanks to those who contributed (you know who you are) we have success again with:
GOG platform + unofficial patch 11.4
Steam platform + unofficial patch 11.4
Do not use 11.5 as of today. May change in the future with further updates.

Thank you very much. Straightforward and easy. Had it going in a few short minutes. Only hang up was using the touch screen on the deck to choose the install path folder. Cheers.

Thanks for the tutorial mate, the only thing I’ve done differently is assign the d-pad to 1-4 keys for an easier dialogue tree experience.

Thanks for the video. will buy this game when it's on sale and try to install it using this video for my steam deck. such an amazing game but at 20 years old it deserves some kinda patch to keep it working and functional natively. this is the next best thing I guess.

For anyone running this on plain Linux (I’m using Nobara 40) and can’t get the game to launch try setting the proton version to an older on 3.16-9 works for me I haven’t tested other versions of protonGE but the current version at the time of this comment does not work for me

Rewatch or use an older version of the patch. I used 1.4 because I've some stuff about 1.5 being unstable.

When I go to the common folder I only see proton folders, no games

You will likely have to go to your MicroSD card location, a quick Google search can tell you where the steam location is for that. I believe you will have to enable hidden files as well to see. I installed on the default SSD. Hope this helps you!

Thank you so much for the guide! I'm having trouble here. 3:40 I added the latest version and it says "GE-Proton8-25 (unused)" I assume this "(unused)" should not appear. What should i do next? I does not appear in the steam window even after refreshing the page. Should i do something in the "show game list" button inside ProtonUp-Qt app? Thank you so much for your help in advance!

If it is unused, that means you currently do not have any games or applications using that proton version in the custom compatibility mode thru Steam game/app's properties. Once you select that version to be used, the "(unused)" will disappear.

@@Milanor Not too sure on that one. I know that I did a lot of backtracking around that part to solve an issue in real time. If you skip to 9:20, then you should be able to locate the folder that is needed for the installation. I believe the media folder is unnecessary.

is the patch necessary? ive been thouroughly surprised by the broken windows games that seem to run without issue out of the box on steam deck. so far i've gotten fallout 3 and thief deadly shadows to boot up straight away and got through the first 30 minutes no problem, was planning on trying deus ex invisible war, kane and lynch, call of Cthulhu: dark corners, and vtmbl

Patch isn't necessary. Just adds a bunch of bug fixes and cut content. You will prolly need the Proton GE but afterwards, should be fine

For some reason it doesn't start while doing exactly like the video. Steam Deck OLED with SteamOS 3.5.19 using proton-GE 8.21 and unofficial patch 15rc9. Patch install went through just fine but the game simply refuses to start and CTD.

Had the same issue, but I fixed it by uninstalling the game completely and downloading/installing the previous version of the patch that's on the site. I also made sure to run the game at least once before installing the patch, which might've also made a difference but I'm not totally sure.

@@leorolando1924 Thanks. So the unofficial patch 14 ? I tried the GOG version, it actually start without patch but if I patch with the 15 it doesn't start anymore.

You can go through the Steam controller layout on the game screen in your library. There are configurations created by the community that you can tweak to your liking!

Or by going into the game, pressing the STEAM button on the Deck, then selecting the controller config on the left hand side.

I have the gog version with the patch installed and when I try and type a name in for my character the steam deck keyboard doesn’t respond.

You might have to be in gamemode and add the shortcut through Steam, perhaps run in Proton-GE as well. Numerous ideas as to why it could not be working but I would start with those. If you have Decky, that could also add some latency or glitching thru the Steam overlay with my experience.

How do you select the options for dialogue? I tried pressing up on the d-pad with the Most Useful Settings control scheme, but it doesn't seem to work for some reason.

Double check if you're in game mode and no desktop? Check control settings again and reapply. Not too sure for that one bud, lil tricky

Hey sorry if this is late and you've already figured it out. When a dialogue option appears press the select button (the one in the top left with two rectangles). Then press the start key (top right with three horizontal lines) to bring the keyboard to the top. Each dialogue option corresponds to a number so the top option will always be 1. So even though the first dialogue option does not state the key to enter it is still corresponding to the 1 key on the virtual keyboard. Hope this helps

I hold the Steam button while using the trackpad. Seems that it could be reading a gamepad configuration while you added the vtmb installation to steam.

I followed all the steps and installed the pkuss patch correctly but when I boot up the game from steam it's not the modded version and I csnt find the modded versions exe to add to steam

It might be trying to register gamepad inputs. Try holding the STEAM button on your Steam Deck and using the trackpad at the same time. Back right trigger for left click.

@LatteLazarus I managed to install it anyways but the game is frequently crashing for me, it'll happen randomly whenever I save or enter a loading screen. Did you encounter anything like this and perhaps know of a fix? I tried using a few different versions of proton but still having the issue.

@@shanebobey9435I haven't had any crashing but using the GE proton could work if you haven't tried already. If you're using desktop mode, try the game mode or vice versa. Hope this helps!

You can go through the Steam controller configuration and find a mapping made by community members! If there is none available, you can be the first to create one for the community. I've done that for a game when there were no configurations available. Just takes a little bit of patience but it is possible!

@@LatteLazarus yeah ive had to take an already existing Duelsense layout and edit it so I can do things like open my character menu and cycle through weapons only things I need to sort out now are how to change the camera so it isn't always changing to first person. thought this might be an intended feature of the game(I've never played VTMB but always had an interest in doing so great tutorials though, I got stuck trying to find the Z drive's media folder but we got it in the end so thanks

Not too sure about that one. According to this guide I read, this should fix the 15 mb error issue by installing the unofficial patch. Go through and double check these steps and try their fixes to see if that works for you. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=113161476

@@punkstr9975 there you need to use the proton custom proton 6.16-GE-1, but the old version worked for me, which was made for Russian, but I couldn’t play because of the lack of support for the system text of Steam OS because of this place the text in Russian I had???

Do you know how to increase the performance. The FPS dips into the 50s and sometimes 40s. It's especially bad when I get to the the beach house to get the astrolite.

Haven't played enough on Steam Deck to get that far but might have to target 40 fps for stability if that's the case. I would check your TDP limit and GPU clock. Maybe max those out. I never touched PowerTools but that plugin could help you with undervolting and such.

I just bought the steam deck oled not what I thought it was I thought I can just download any game and just play and anything else needed which is download automatically so she's some games do that not the case for every game can't play any Ubisoft game I really can't play masquerade which honestly was kind of my main purpose of getting it considering I also travel for work and honestly it seems I hassle to download all these applications I'm honestly thinking about just selling the damn thing now after I paid $581 for it ugh
