Got a vinyl sheet kitchen floor that is heaping me! Ha. After years of kids and dogs it needs a refurb. Contacted a local flooring place and their price made me gasp. So I guess with the help of the grown son now we'll do it ourselves. After watching a dozen vids I landed on yours and like most below say, it's the best. It's the one I saved. You the man!!

Excellent video. I have done the job a couple of times, but watching your tutorial before my latest effort was just great. It can be quite an intimidating DIY. Your laid back, yet knowledgeable approach takes a lot of the stress away. kudos. I often do messy jobs like painting in socks. Stepping in a splat is noticed immediately and not tracked all about.

I use a curved back vinyl knife to preliminary follow along the walls at a right angle and then come back a second time using the curve back to “break” the backing into place. By using a wallboard knife at the angle of the knifes end, flat on the floor (main body of knife will be upward as you cut), it will cut the vinyl exactly against the wall board. I prefer not to use extra molding to cover spaces between the wall and vinyl myself. If in a bath or kitchen, i will sometimes use caulk with the tip cut off so there is only a small amount of caulk coming out into the right angle of floor and wall.

I know its a DYI video but I wanted to toss in a few tips. When you undercut the door jamb, place a piece of your sheet vinyl on top of the scrap luan so when you cut in the vinyl later you can follow the base moulding cut and the vinyl will slip under the jamb just like the luan did. Also please dont nail the luan down unless you have too. Use subfloor staples and they should be 6 inches on center in the center of the boards and every 2 inches apart on the seams :D

I remember doing this with my Dad when I was younger. I needed a refresher. Thank you. Only difference between you two is that Dad used a 2x4 with old carpet stapled on it. He'd rub it on the one half from the middle to the edges before starting on the other half. Not sure if that made a difference. Nice work, let me share a tip, use the back of your utility to press the edges close to wall, then lay your knife flat on floor and cut across..you will indeed cut around door jams, and especially walls, you end up leaving a nice gap of between to one 8th to 1 quarter. And it will fall in nicely. Do a practice piece, you'll see.

Hey Louise, just take your time and drive fit it make sure everything is cut and fitting nicely before gluing. I would start in the large area and then cut it to fit in around your obstacles. Then glue 1/2 at a time, roll it out and you’re done! You got this

As for caulking under the doorjambs that's a no no...leave a little material and use a very dull putty knife to push the vinyl under the jamb. Same can be done around the whole perimeter of the room if u leave 3/16 of an inch space between base board and Luuan. That way you dont have to use the shoe mold/quarter round to get a cleaner look. And btw always do your painting before you install the vinyl. Nothing worse than having a funky paint line between baseboard and floor lol and for added protection in a wash room or bathroom a thin line of premium clear silicone caulking around the perimeter will keep moisture from causing problems later on down the road. Sorry to have been "that guy" in the comments. Just trying to help as he is and pass on the knowledge 😎

@homemend
@homemend 6 лет назад
hi dab! great question.. usually if its only one layer of flooring, you can go over top of it.. if it's adhered well. if you have bubbles or lifting areas, you can cut those out with a knife and use floor leveler to fill in the missing areas so the seam lines cant be seen. i hope this helps!

Thanks for making this video! Gonna try and do all 3 kids bedrooms and the hallway upstairs. Was thinking I'd pay to have the smallest area done and watch how they did it so I could do the rest by myself. Ha! I pretty confident I can do it all myself now. I do have a question though, what exactly is loose laying? It was recommended by the manufacture of the sheet vinyl I am looking at but only in smaller spaces of less than 25 square yards. I assume it's only held down at the perimeter of the room?
@homemend

thanks jennifer, yes you can do this! take your time and be confident! Ive never done loose lay myself but ive seen it done with just gluing the perimeter and the shoe moulding holding it down. if theres anything i can do to help let me know! good luck!

I'm looking to install vinyl sheet flooring to the bare plywood/drymax OSB type floor of a cargo trailer. However when you walk on it, the boards give a little, and buckle underneath from the weight. Will this be an issue with trafficmaster vinyl sheet flooring? Do I need some kind of underlayment or will it not be that noticeable ? I don't want it to stretch and bubble up from the stress of walking on it. Thanks!
@homemend
@homemend 3 года назад
Hey K. I put down new one so it has the best possible surfaceto stick to. With your situation if you didn’t want to do a underlayment I would go with the vinyl plank with the sticky tabs. It’s super durable and it really doesn’t matter what your floor is doing underneath as long as it stable. I hope this helps

It’s 6 inches apart in field and shoelace the seams every 2 and a half. Easier with a staple gun

Hey I have tile and I wanted to put this over tile do you think that would work?
@homemend
@homemend 5 лет назад
hey jamie....in theory it would work however, the vinyl will show every texture and grout line..if you wanted to go over with vinyl you could do the vinyl plank floating floor..its an awesome product and so easy...actually have a video coming soon..i hope this helps!

Thank you planning on doing this this month! 2 questions: when I lay the subfloor do I need to put in wood-filler on the seams/nail heads? and also if I dont have the vinyl roller is there another thing you recommend? Thank you!!
@alissa3448
@alissa3448 3 года назад
Oh! And I may have missed it but do you have a glue you prefer/recommend? Or is Loctite okay? (I have that on hand)
@homemend
@homemend 3 года назад
Hi Alissa. Depending on the thickness of the floor it is possible to see the joints in your subfloor, to be safe you may want to skim coat them. Also if you don’t have the roller you might be able to use a piece of dimensional lumber like a one by four or a level, something that’s can serve as a straight edge. I hope this helps

no preferred glue but get a tub that says "sheet vinyl adhesive"

"Rock hard" as in USG Durabond 20 (90 or 45)?
@homemend

Hey Jon. . I’m guessing something along the lines of Dura bond would work but I was referring to Armstrong rockhard. It’s called water putty they sell it in the paint Aisle.

I chose linoleum with fake grout lines laid-out in a grid-like pattern because the store did not cut my sheeting square. This made it easy for me to straight edge cut the sheet square as well as match the pattern for seams. Just overlap the two sheet edges and tape them together at the matched grout lines. Then cut all the way through both pieces and viola', you have a perfect cut seam.

Home Mender Inc I have wasp inside and I'm not sure where they are coming in and I have sprayed and it doesn't seem to be working . I just noticed baby ants not red ones tho now that is an issue but I was just wondering if I should remove all inside baseboard and trim and caulk ?
@SeasonsOFcolors
@SeasonsOFcolors 7 лет назад
Home Mender Inc I just bought this mobile home and not long after moving in I noticed wasp on one end of this mobile home mainly in the bathroom but also a few in the bedroom . Not sure where they are getting in I don't have an exhaust fan and the only thing I can figure is that they are coming in through a base board or trim . I have bought several sprays with no luck and I have also noticed in my laundry area by the back door that a small section of the floor by the door is rotted . I have seen a few of your videos and you are the man I must say !!!!! I just wish you was closer so you could possibly come over take a look and give me a guide on what to do first .
@homemend
@homemend 7 лет назад
hmm.. I would definitely check the outside areas, maybe a dryer or exhaust vent in the side of the home? they may be coming in through a bath exhaust fan? we have definitely done that before, not for wasps but had to seal the wall to the concrete slab, then install base. It seemed to help keep bugs out. I hope this helps!
@SeasonsOFcolors
@SeasonsOFcolors 7 лет назад
Home Mender Inc there isn't a bathroom exhaust fan but there is a dryer in the laundry area that has the dryer hose going down through the floor and not out the wall like most usually do

Can you do a video on replacing a Single-Pole Motion Sensor Light Switch? I have one in my bathroom that has 2-3 lights hooked up to it. 2 lights in the bathroom (above the two sinks) and the light in the washer/dryer room. I took it off without paying attention to the wiring. Never had one with so many wires. It has like 2-3 white wires, 2-3 black wires and 1 ground. One of the black wires being a "load wire".
