How to Introduce a New Guinea Pig to Your Herd

This is our introduction of Meep to the rest of the guinea pigs! This video will walk you through how to correctly introduce two or more guinea pigs to each other. The tips in this video were used from my experience with my personal guinea pigs as well as introductions at the animal shelter I work at.

Thank you so much for your help!!! Our pigs have been fighting for around six months and right now they are completely chilled out! Its so awesome that we don’t have to split the cages anymore! We just constructed a three level pig-palace that is completely clean and ready for them to explore! I really can’t express how much you've helped our little buddies.

I’m introducing my two boys today ... they seem to enjoy each other’s company so I think it will go well! We have their cages right next to each other and they like to sleep side by side and try to groom each other ☺️

Thanks, great video. We tried to introduce our new Pig in exactly the wrong way. We never imagined how complicated this process could be! But all these videos are tremendously helpful. I particularly like the "buddy" bath idea! We're hoping that with the new information we can have a more successful attempt at bonding!

Nice video. Bonding is pretty stressful and easy to underestimate how important getting it right is. It took Ginger & Chutney just a day to get on with each other but they were still occasionally rumbling for months after before they became the inseparable duo they are today.

OMG you named one of your guinea pigs Eevee too my daughter who is a Pokemon fanatic had named hers Eevee and we're getting a new one tomorrow because we've noticed that our Eevee feels lonely at times and there's nothing we could do at the time but then we remembered that there's another Petco out by where I take my daughter for counseling but I have faith that our Eevee will get along with whoever we choose because when we first got her she had already been with another piggy. She has become a very important part of our family and we truly love her

I didn't quarantine my new piggy, I just took her straight to the vet to be checked out. The vet said she was totally healthy so I was able to start bonding that day. I know this is an expensive option but my house is soo small so I didn't't have another room to put a different cage in. But it worked well for me!

@@stefaniegracecruz8650 They will keep chasing and nipping each other for a while and that’s totally ok. If they are physically hurting each other (with blood/injuries) then separate them but if they aren’t doing that it’s totally normal for the bonding

Wish I would have watched your video 2 weeks ago. We got a baby about 2 weeks ago and have had them separated in separate cages but put them together in a playpen. I’m afraid to put them together because my bigger one chases and tries to jump the smaller one. I wasn’t sure if that was ok, I didn’t want to over stress the baby. While watching this video I had them in the playpen and out hay in the middle and they were more calm than ever before and intermittently the older would chase the little one around. I’m going to try a buddy bath too. They have never bitten each other just chase and jump and basically have their heads up each other’s butts sniffing. I would love to send you a video of their interactions but not sure how

I have two guinea pigs and i did everything you said to do, but the oldest does not like the younger one at all. The oldest was mean to her so we had to separate them before somthing realy bad happend. So now they are separated we are working on making a big costum cage and make it have a wall so they cant get to each other. I was wondering if i can get another guinea pig and put her in with my youngest (nicest) guinea pig. Any tips?

Hey! I love their little beds at the end and this is super helpful! I adopted a little female (I think she is about 3) and I really want to get her a companion (I was looking at baby females at the store) but I don’t know if she has been around other piggies or how she will take to the baby. Any other suggestions to introducing a baby to an adult? Sorry about all the questions- I’m new to owning a piggie and I want to make sure I introduce them properly.

I'm in the same situation. I have a female that is 1 and my kids talked me into another guinea pig and he's a boy. I don't think he's much older than about 3 months. I introduced them and they were freaking out. I don't think either of them liked. The last thing I wanna do is stress either of them out. 😭😭 Helppp idk what to do either

Fern Blundell So sorry about your piggy! Yes you should still be able to find your 3 year old a friend. Sometimes they are fine with an adult pig and sometimes they will only like being introduced to young/baby pigs!

Paul V I haven’t heard of two males being kept with females, but you could give it a shot. I have heard that the males will still be competitive for the females even though they are neutered, so I would just be extra careful to make sure the males aren’t aggressive to each other before leaving them all alone.

Just curious, but where did you get your bars/cage pieces for your floor time? I have the larger squares that won't fit my 1 week old litter of babies without them escaping. Any chance you could share where you got your cage in this video?

hey :) i’m getting 2 piggies soon and they have lived together their whole lives (they are 2yrs old already) and i’m pretty sure they are siblings but not sure ? i want to get a third as well but the person i’m getting them from only have 2 available so i would need to get the new one from somewhere else . i’m kind of scared of introducing a new one as the other two are literally best friends and are equals together and i feel like they would both bully or ‘take over’ a new one . should it be okay ?

It should be okay! This was my exact situation with my first three pigs :) My first two were really bonded and I did have to do a slower introduction, but they get along fine now! Have fun with the new peegs!

A rabbit crate will work as long as it has a minimum of 7.5 square feet for 1-2 guinea pigs to live inside :)

A run should be fine! It's best if you measure the area to make sure they have enough space. 1-2 guinea pigs need a minimum of 7.5 square feet but more is always better :)

I have 2 male guinea pigs. One is almost 3 and the other is a couple of weeks/months old (Not sure on his exact age). I've tried introducing them. But my oldest likes to try and mount the other. Is that normal? He's also been trying to bite but I don't think he's ever hurt the baby. I want them to live in the same cage but for right now I have them in the same cage with a divider where they can see each other. I have the divider because my baby guinea pig is so small he can still fit through the grids. I want to make sure they will both be safe so I put the divider to avoid them getting together unsupervised for now.

Kellen McKeown Females will be less aggressive usually. Although if you find two males that already live together it shouldn’t be an issue :) Congrats on the new piggies!

Yolo Paws I would love to, but I don’t have any male guinea pigs at this time! The introductions for males are the same way though 😊 A neutered male most likely won’t have issues with 3 females.

I have two males under a year old...a chilled one and a more dominate one.... introduced a little baby boy but the dominate pig bossing everyone and is annoyed enough he’s throwing a tantrum ! He was growling at them both and stamping around chucking food bowls etc. If I start again in a neautral space will he ever be nice ? He loves my hubby but hates me. New baby and other one is ok tho....I’ve had to move the grumpy one out for the night as the new baby’s so small and nowhere to put it.

I have never had males, but I have heard that it's difficult to get 3 males to live together successfully. They would definitely need a pretty large cage! You can keep trying in neutral territory and taking it slow, but there is a chance that they will not get along all together. Just let them be grumpy together for a while unless they start biting! Growling and throwing food bowls is okay :)

Christi Solsberry Usually it is recommended to still do a quarantine to make sure they are not sick and to also get used to their surroundings in a new home. :)

My pig is 6 can i introduce others to her? I had 3 but 2 died in the last week. I had to put them to sleep. One had a tumor and the other couldnt eat and breath. :( I am looking everywhere for piggies the same age as her, but every shelter have babies.

Awesome video!! I have a 5 yr old female pig. We got her from a friend who couldn't keep her because she didn't get along with her other pig. This other pig was my pigs baby and they were kept in a small cage together. We have had our pig for about 3 yrs and she has been on her own all this time. I would love to give her a friend but I'm not sure if this is a good idea. She is very sweet, timid and quiet. Do you think we could get another one?

Terri Maerz I think it’s definitely worth a shot! Some pigs are pickier about who they live with but the majority of guinea pigs like to like in a group/pair :)

Squiggly Pigs We decided to get a piggy! So far they've had a couple of play sessions and have done great!! Intro is done in neutral area with but of food and an open hide as you had suggested. We were not successful with quarantine as I have little hands at home and those hands wondered. Baby pig seems really healthy though! We were told she is about 4 months old, but I think she may be only a couple of weeks. She is eating hay, checking out pellets and fresh foods. She just fits in my hand. Does that seem about right?? Thank you so much for replying!! Getting a friend for our piggy has been the best experience so far. I will never have a single pig again!!

If the oldest guinea pig continues to jump over the new guinea pig and hump movement. We separated them because I felt uncomfortable seeing the baby getting bully. How can I introduce the oldest guinea pig to the new guinea pig without him bullying him?

I only have one guinea pig and I want another so my guinea pig isn’t lonely. But when I told my mom she said that they are going to fight. Help! 😭

Don't get pigs from pet stores. Always give them houses to hide. Because as you said they are pray animals. 1 Square meter for each pig. Plus one extra. For cleaning citric acid is perfect.

Oh um... I have two female petsmart guinea pigs ( adult and baby ) and one recused male. I am very very scared for them to introduce them..

Aesthetic Cookie Just take it slow and I’m sure it will be fine! I’ve heard that neutered males get along pretty easily with females in general. 😊

My guniea pig died tonight and I keep waking up to check on the other one and my hamster and I’m gonna buy my guniea pig another friend and he is already getting depressed and my mom won’t listen to me I love her but Ik more about guniea pigs than her ( btw I’m not trying to be mean or disrespectful my mom ) that’s how I convinced her to let me get them so with MY 25 dollars I’m gonna buy the guniea pig and my moms friend and my mom will help pay and I will try but my mom is very Independent ( like a lot) :)

don’t feed her human food! it’s actually really bad for them. Keep in mind that just because she likes it doesn’t mean it’s good for her just like dogs like chocolate but we know we can’t give it to them.
