One of the reasons I like this channel is because you use your trucks to pay your bills, not haul your ego. I do the same, and have a ton of respect for those of us that depend on these trucks every day. Your information is very helpful, and any advice you can give that helps make a truck last longer with fewer break downs is advice worth taking.
I’m a seasoned(49 yrs old) Mobile Diesel Mechanic w/my own small business here in Conroe Tx & your concern about high egt’s is more than legit!Letting any diesel breathe freely in & out w/great tuning will bring loads of efficiency-i suspect as time goes on technology will allow for everyone of us that wants run lower egt’s under demanding loads to do it fairly easily -I’m a Diesel nerd so your videos really peak my interest. Thanks for your time brother
Sam, personally, I love it when you do technical videos on heavy towing, and how your different trucks are set up and running. For those haters and the ones that simply don't understand that your trucks (along with the other equipment) are your living and not some hot rod that daddy bought them to tearing around town in and showing off. Take care of your truck(or car) and it'll take care of you.
Great video!!! I tow a 38' fifth wheel toy hauler that has gvwr of 19k. Nothing like what you are towing but have experienced some radical climbs like on highway 70 coming up to the Eisenhower tunnel to come into Denver. A couple of times I had to touch 1400° for a few seconds and then was able to back off to cool it down. Cummins states that they engineer their engines to hold 1500° but I totally agree with you. Getting up to 1300° makes me start to get concerned. Again, thanks for your videos.
You are doing a great job with your content. You have a good mix of video skills, information and humor. I am new to the RU-vid world and dove in when I bought the ranch in 2016 with questions about how to install erosion control, French drains, hydraulic lift for a dump and a host of other DIY projects. This led me to your channel. I like the fact that you are respectful, polite and well spoken and my first reaction and comment was about your relationship with your father and how proud he must be of the grown up you have become. I lost my dad a few years ago and miss him dearly, he raised me to work hard, work smart and never stop learning from others. I’ve thought about starting a RU-vid channel to document my retirement, the Ranch project, the Farmhouse project and all that changes when you go from 40 years of work to where I’m at now. I am thin skinned and don’t deal with haters very well, so I don’t think I could handle that part of the many parts and pieces of building a channel. I enjoy and appreciate what you bring to RU-vid, keep it up Sam👍👍👍
Very good tutorial for us who treasure your experience. I’m 55 and I’m here to tell you that the best thing to do is listen and learn. I bought myself a diesel in May. I have much to learn. Thanks for all your videos. Chris
I watched this video when it was first uploaded, and I just watched it again. I will say it is very refreshing to see someone post a video and tell people if they don't like the content to pack their stuff and leave. Thanks Sam, I appreciate the genuine content, and will be a subscriber for life!
Nice to see someone making a video of what these trucks are actually made for and the proper way to keep them running better and longer. Hats off to ya, excellent video and knowledge taken.
I live in Rocky's at 10 thousand feet people come and burn their truck up bragging about pulling mountain in high gear . As soon as I aproch 1200 I drop a gear. Great video!
Totally agree, when I hit 1150 I start getting nervous. RPM is definitely your friend when towing. Methanol injection and knowing how and when to use it helps a lot. I run about 85% water and I don't over use it.
I’ve been bouncing around watching videos on 3rd gen Cummins and this has been the only one I’ve watched that was worth watching and actually teaches something worth learning I have a 06 dully and only had it for few months so always taking time to learn new things about em and how to take good care of them. All the other guys I’ve watched on here don’t really teach how to take care of them just how to run em in the ground
I just got a 17 3500 looking for info to build a truck to pull 25000 pounds all the time looking at getting a compound setup just for egts and things you recommend not really concerned about price as much as getting home this is the first real video that has show me what I am looking for a real working truck not something just to burn the tires off and roll coal
Your video was excellent! So much great info and I appreciate you putting this together. I have an 07 5.9 with 113k miles, full built Auto Transmission, EFI Live, Airbox, and slightly baffled 4” exhaust. I tow a 10k camper, so I would guess I am 12k fully loaded…not anywhere close to what you are towing. So glad to watch your video and know I am well within range on my EGT’s when towing. I hit 1100 on big hills, and on a few occasions, I may hit 1200 but I always try and stay below that. If I am half way up a hill and already approaching 1200, I will downshift to bring those temps back down. The key info I take from your video is 1200 isn’t the melting point like I always thought. If you are hitting 1300 on occasion, I feel better about just hitting 1200 once in a while. Thanks again for a great video and valuable info! I only wish I had watched your video a long time ago. 👍
You are a smart man. I am a master machinist. Exhaust Gas Temperature is very important and anything above 1300 degrees you will overheat thr oil, burn up turbo and Engine bearings. Even in a stock truck an EGT gauge is a great idea. A great tune should deliver power with fuel efficiency. Like you said brother dumping fuel doesn't get great results. Loved the video and God bless.
Love the videos... Keep up the great work, Sam! I have a 2013 5500 Deleted and a 2014 Deleted. The 13 doesn’t have an egt probe yet. The 14 runs high on the EGTs. I think some of it is the gearing but also the tuning. As you said the engine has plenty of power to get the job done, but pushing it that high on the EGTs can have some major consequences. I prefer to keep them below 1250. When dealing with the Dallas traffic I sometimes don’t pay as close of attention as I should... i have looked over to see it over 1400 before. Once my heart starts beating again I make sure to let up on the throttle &/or force it to downshift. On a regular basis I’ll have between 20-35k behind the truck. Heaviest load we ever actually weighed came in around 54k gross. 5500 pulled it just fine. We run electric/hydraulic brakes on all of our big gneck trailers, which definitely helps bring everything to a stop in a hurry. I would highly recommend paying the extra for that vs all electric brakes IF you are going to be hauling heavy.
Really appreciate the content, I have a square body suburban with a 12 valve swap and just installed my EGT , Trans, and boost gauges and was glad to come across your topic . I hitch tow a 35’ camper, not the weights you tow ha ha, but it’s 7900 dry and really needed to know how to react when my Auto trans decides to shift and when I should change the parameters on my trans controller for towing . Thanks!
Really like the video man, you really give good advice on what to watch out for. I know experience is everything and I wouldn’t be where I’m at if I didn’t listen to everyone else’s trials and tribulations. Keep up the good work.
Great video Sam!! Don't worry about the haters. There are plenty of us out here that appreciate what you do and want to learn. I very much enjoy your videos and you do a great job with them. Good on you brother!!
He addressed them right after doing the compound setup, it was right around 1000 under decent acceleration without a trailer.. I can only imagine what he was seeing pulling the big enclosed with the 05 in the back. But I believe you are right. I don't think he ever said anything while towing.
Just came across this video.. definitely clarified things. I definitely getting a EGT guage since my head is warped and I'm spending 4k on getting it all fixed... we full-time RV with a 12000lb travel trailer. Our truck is a 2012 Ram 2500HO 6.7L Cummins with a EFI LIVE.
Love the knowledge videos man. One thing ive learned in years of pro mod drag racing with big multiple system nitrous tunes, knowledge isn't free, nor is it cheap.
And I do like this channel better then the other one where hes got all race trucks. You do an awesome jobs on the videos, I look for the new one every day and sit and watch
I’ve hit 1350 in my 03 5.9 with turbo upgrade and tunes made Me nervous, comfortable with 1100-1200 pulling a hill, I’m only towing 13k rv 5th wheel, just need to know your truck and how to drive it, good video Sam keep them coming
Thanks for the info, Sam. Your experience really makes you knowledgeable on the subject! My biggest concern in my truck is RPM. I have an 04 Cummins with an auto tranny, idk what gears it has but on 35s it runs about 2200-2300 rpm at 60 and over 2500rpm around 70. This is my first diesel so I am paranoid, but I'd be lying if I said I don't normally set the cruise right at 60 and slowly make my way down the highway.
This is some straight Diesel Wisdom that you don't get unless You've seen the inside of your local engine shop! Everything you said is 100% factual and these people got to stop blowing these trucks up. Look at these motors you got to downshift keep those RPMs up and the fluids moving. Safe holding temp 1250° Maximum brief temperature spikes 1400°
Great videos! Been watching these and started to recognize the roads. What are the chances in the big world of youtube someone would be posting videos from our small town? What a coincidence!
For new tuning, since you already got EFI Live I’d recommend tuning by CTT (used to be HPP and Calibrated Addiction before they merged). It’s who I’m gonna be going with when I switch from the Mini Maxx I’m currently running
Less load is less egt. Good video! I was afraid to get my truck over 1300 egt so I always backed out of the throttle until I needed to downshift. I want custom tunes. Just been runnin the box tunes from php on the hydra chip.
I got a 2008 ram 6.7 deleted, tow with no extra power, I generally stay under 1300, if I hit 1350 I’ll back off the go pedal or drop a gear. I’ve got 300,000+ on it so far, haven’t touched the motor except 2 water pumps. Cheers.
Glad I found your channel! I drove truck for 50 years, the temperatures were simple. Water temperature going up, oil pressure dropping you better get out of it. I never watched the pyro. The manifold pressure was my go to. Anyway I don't savvy thi.but new wording for the same things. Also I just watched your video on egt`s. I have a deleted 6.7 cummins and sometimes I get pretty heavy..30-40 k. The guy that tuned my truck said not to go over 1400. You say 1200. That's a big difference. I just bought a new travel trailer that's going to put me north of 31k.??? I'm also concerned about the tyranny. Please give me some real numbers to go by on these ram's. Mine was super gutless till I got it deleted at 80k. Happy now. Except they keep sending me more things to download...I don't know if I want to it runs real good. Sorry got caught up in the moment.
That white Dodge Ram 6.7 Cummins sounds awesome she’s pulling the gooseneck trailer real good 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Thank you for your video. I had my turbo go bad . And i use to get 400 to 900 egt. Now with a new turbo with vgt. I am getting 1000. To 1300 has been a normal . And i have been grabbing gears. But i went up to 1800 the other day. For 2 seconds. It scared the crud out of me
Great informative video for us newer towers. I’ve been hunting all over trying to find a good example of what egts I should stay away from. I’ve been pulling light till now and getting into a 12k lb. trailer wanted to know my limits for going through the mountains. Thank you for the lesson in egts,
Great video Sam. Mine runs about the same, I just would like the engine temp to run a little cooler. When I’m towing it runs 215 to 225 and not towing 195 to 200 .
CP Steve Miller 😬🙋🏻♂️ your Truck is used to it !!!! 😬 Also i think that the Common rail trucks can handle a little bit more heat then a 12v.... Btw a stock 4th gen non deleted is running crazy high egt’s 🙈
You might want to touch on probe placement. I see guys quoting EGT numbers from the stock downstream probes. So there might be some confusion about that. Love the content!
I really enjoy these technical videos, I am learning so much. I have to admit I have always been a Mopar fan since before I could drive (tired of the ford fanboys)
On our 05 F550 6.0 I wish I knew what the E.G.T. got too when we towed 24,000 lbs everyday. The truck would be to the floor going up hills near redline by a couple hundred rpms. The turbo would be squealing 😂😂 one day she finally went boom.
Iam a retired car hauler for GM and when I was 23 an old mechanic told me there are two things that will kill a diesel heat and rpm’s and I have never went over 2200rpms you take the big truck motors are set at 2150rpm so that’s how I roll and 68 and second new Dodge 3500 dullay 4x4 6 speed manual and I bought it new in 05 and has been a great truck 150 K on the clock only up grades one piece rear alum driveshaft fuel filtration and a Fleece intank lift pump.
Negative comments is still traffic for the channel an helps. The haters are only helping the channel. Lol keep it coming 👍I personally love the informative videos
I recommend the banks cold intake elbow and after market custom manifold and K n N intake filter more so if you have a tuner the better them Cummins breath the better we have never any of them pickups you own what they have under the hood.have you ever considered banks intake charger???
i agree it is important put simple down shift ,reduces the load probably use less fuel as well not working as hard . Maybe wortha thought i have added a water methanol kit ,it adds power and lowers EGT not sure of whar you have put on but GAIL Banks is the master .If you havnt already added look at the monstar ram will save you from the killer grid heater bolt as well . Garrey From AUSTRALIA diesel fitter 45 years 08 ram 2500 9.8 liter per 100 Ks not towing wont be trading it
20k on the back of my 2014 f250 6.7 haven’t seen much over 1200 pulling very hard! Stock other than a pot hole I couldn’t be happier with power and reliability
Another great video. Don’t let the idiots distract you from doing you. Never argue with and idiot, you will be dragged down to their level and beaten with their experience.
I enjoyed watching this video. It sounds like you are a pretty down-to-earth person. I agree that there is nothing to prove by driving your ego up a hill. I've never agreed with that philosophy. I have a 2010 long box with 550,000 km, 330,000 mi. I have a truck camper that is about 2800 lb that I carry around often and I often tow my 4,000 lb boat while I'm carrying the camper. I also tow a 10,000 lb fifth wheel occasionally. I love my truck very much. It's recently developed a symptom of using engine coolant, but there is nothing in the oil thankfully. I think the turbo is maybe starting to tell me that it needs to be retired. What is your suggestion for a replacement turbo on a deleted 6.7?
Hey Sam you're doing a good job you have a very good educational videos and I enjoy watching you love you videos keep up the good work always like to say something good about your videos to anybody I watch to those haters out there they can kiss our butts you keep up the good work man keep the videos coming
I'm currently building a 6.7 Fummins for a work truck and I'm researching a good turbo/tune setup. What turbo are you using if it's stock VGT and you were to upgrade what would it be? Thanks for the great content! Subscribed!!
Love yourshoejustgetting into the pyro running an mm3 common rail. 5 mbrp exhaust. Stock tuning till now. See what the gets are. Run 65 and about 2300rpm always drive trucks by sound. Need a local Colorado tuner. Love your videos. Let exchange info man. Lonny. Catch up
I know right now im not really worried about egt. Running a 97 f350 7.3ps. I pull a 13k trl grossing 22k. Its a stock 293000 engine with an edge evolution tow tune. Im looking at fixing oil leak cause its getting bad. Then im researching a new turbo setup and ill get a hole drilled for a probe when i have the turbo off. I now have a napa 6637 airfilter and a recent 5 inch exhaust. Trk aint no drag car. Aint supposed to be. I get 12.5 mpg daily best and 8.3 all towing heavy when going on vacation with my trl
My 2010 Dodge 4500 runs 1320deg pulling a grade with 2000lbs on the bed. That is at 60mph. It is stock, sans gauges. Haven't gotten my trailer on it yet. I'll see what it does with 16k on the back.
Where are you measuring your EGT's at? On my Ford 6.0, I measure them at the back of the left exhaust manifold, and it sounds like you're measuring yours at the exhaust manifold also. Some measure EGT at the downpipe and that'll read a bit lower. I pull a 10,000# 5th wheel, and on an 8% grade I've seen about 1150 steady in 3rd gear at about 3,000 RPM. If I have it in my top tune (45HP) and I floor it getting on an interstate, I'll see temps over 1300 before it gets out of 2nd gear (automatic). BTW I never tow in this setting, I use one of the lower hp tunes, usually about 25hp added. My truck has the EGR blocked and a 5" exhause with a muffler.
My son just got A 08 3500 ..6.7 6 speed.. We changed all the filters and fluids and just made a trip from Michigan to Eastern Penn. To pick up a new trailer...( big heavy lots of hydraulic stuff..) Truck pulled it home with ease even in mountains... We put a tiny home on it ( Amish built ) and truck gets hot in a few miles ? Any suggestions ?
Love the videos, wondering what your opinion is on early 3rd gens that don’t have EFI live capability. What tuner do you recommend for towing on one of these trucks? Thanks!
My 92 12 valve it was easy just watch temp gauge and normal was 1/4 on gauge and when it would get to half way on gauge just drop a gear and it would fall back to 1/4 on water temp gauge and back then we didn’t have all these gauges . So I just went off the water temp gauge and you just had to figure it out. And I was then the only guy in town with Dodge 5.9 and when took muffler off I would have guys chase me down and want to know why my truck sounds so good.
Some people lug an engine to save fuel, without realizing they are just building heat and wasting fuel. We used to figure 1200f with the sensor in the manifold, and 900f after the turbo. I suppose newer metallurgy allows a little more heat.
My dad has a stock 04 5.9 Cummins and whenever he pulls a load over 6 ton on the highway he runs it hot at 55 to 60 mph, but as soon as he uses towhaul mode, he can get up to 65 to 70 mph on the highway, and then the truck cools down, why is that?
