I'm not exactly sure what you'd consider "bad" behavior, but I'll tell you right now that you can't effectively discipline rats. And by that I mean that if you try to, you'll end up with fearful rats that dislike human interaction. Its just not worth it. The best way (in my opinion) to combat any "bad" behavior that your rats have is in a positive behavior modification manner. You can use positive reinforcement to change a rat's emotion towards something (for example my formerly "aggressive" girl Blackberry used to lunge and bite whenever hands were anywhere near her. Once I figured out her triggers, I was able to use positive reinforcement in the form of treats to gradually extend her comfort zone, until she stopped biting entirely.), or just to change their behavior in general (for example I want my rats to stay inside their playpen. They used to jump out whenever they got bored, so I taught them to climb onto my left shoulder whenever they were done playing. This has eliminated these "escape" behaviors entirely, and has made free-range time much more relaxing for me). I will warn you that some behaviors are just instinctual/intrinsic to rats. Marking, for example, isn't something you can stop. And you can't punish a rat for not going in their litter box, as while rats can be litter trained, they're rarely 100% accurate. Similarly, rats are rodents so chewing has to be expected. If you give your rats a varied environment they're less likely to start chewing your stuff, but even so, it can and does happen and they won't make the connection between chewing and any sort of punishment. These behaviors come with having rats (or rodents in general). Finally, don't buy into that phony "dominate your rat" crap. Its not nearly as popular now as it was a few years ago, but even so flipping over and physically forcing down your rat isn't going to solve any problems. Rather, you'll have a fearful animal that doesn't understand why you keep forcing them into vulnerable positions. CongRATs on the soon-to-be new rats by the way, and good on you for doing your research! Too many people seem to think that just because rats themselves tend to be cheap and live short lives that they can just buy one spontaneously without any problems cropping up.

Sand will get caught up in their respiratory tracts and cause a URI (Upper Respiratory Infection). If you've watched enough of TheRatGuru's videos, you'd know this already. Congratulations for your new ratty girls!!!

It sounds like he is greasy; intact (not neutered) male rats have something called “Buck Grease,” which is a buildup of their natural oils. It can happen in neutered males as well, but it is most common in intact males. The grease is orange in color, and perfectly normal. However, I would still recommend you see a vet just in case it’s something else.

First of all that is buck grease which is because of hormones males naturally carry. Second of all I think it’s good people recommend going to the vet, and I agree don’t ask on RU-vid because it could be serious, but like that is a thing you can literally google. They don’t need to go to the vet, but also if you think something is wrong the least you could do is google it or ask/look on a rats forum because you may as well google it because there is a chance you wouldn’t need to go to the vet.

Your rats are probably old or sadly even dead now, but wheels arent recomenned for rats because it has to be a perfect size to do no harm to the rats back, but im sure they will somehow use it on one point.

The red stuff is called porphyrin. Its just rat mucous, and on its own it means nothing. Some rats have more than others (my rat Sonic always had lots of porphyrin, even when healthy). But with other rats, they groom it off before you see it so extra porphyrin staining can be a sign of illness (sick rats don't groom as much). Anyway, if you don't see any other symptoms, I wouldn't worry.

I had to dunk mine in water for a quick cool off, no matter how much they protested, got frozen water bottle ready, this weeks gonna be all thirties.

Yup, it can actually fit 6 rats (but most people would try to stick to 5 or less - I have 4 girls living in a CN single and they love it!)

Leah - one of my older female rats has gotten really under weight and doesn't seem at all interested in her usual food. she is however interested in stuff like eggs, veggies, oats, etc, bUT she'll only eat it when she's inside her cage with her sister and her daughters which is a problem because then her daughters try and steal the food from her and one of them is almost overweight and the other one is so I don't know what to do and could use some advice please. also some ideas for foods that could help her gain weight

Hmm.. is she still active? Maybe just put her cagemates in a separate area and feed her then put them back together... Eggs, peanut butter(watered down though), avocado(only the meat, avoid the skin+pit), peas, almonds, and ensure are all good foods to help ratties gain weight! The foods you listed are a softer food... are her teeth okay? could they be overgrown?

Leah - yes she's still very active and her teeth aren't overgrown at all and I have powdered peanut butter for them cuz it has less sugar and I can water it down easily also I thought almonds were bad for them? and it's hard to separate her from her daughters because 2 of the 3 are a bit skiddish especially when it comes to being picked up and I don't like stressing them out too much by removing them (because they're both already stressed due to the fact that they are missing a back foot which is a whole other story on its own that I could actually use some advice for as well as I can't quite legally take them to a vet..) but regardless I'll try my best to separate them for feeding and hopefully it works also would macadamia nuts b good to help her fatten up or is it just gonna put her heart at risk?
