My mom is 81 years old and knits like her life depends on it and pretty damn good speed....I can knit in the O.K. zone maybe for a hat....but not like mamma speedy and she teases me a lot for years but I teases her back....( I tell but I can walk faster...LOl ) and a Loving way sometimes we sit together and have a race making a scarf.....but guess who the winner is.....God Bless you Ladies I think you're great.....

I'm a beginner, again, and have fallen in love with norwegian knitting. Minimal, small movements. Easy peasy. I'm with you, it's not a contest but, I'm older and the hands, fingers, and shoulders are thanking me.

I can appreciate those who knit fast, however, it defeats the whole purpose of my knitting. I knit for relaxation and enjoyment. Trying to go faster would just add stress that I do not need life.Love watching you two.

I'm an English knitter, but frankly I'm much faster than my Continental counterparts. My movements are somewhat like a sewing machine. I never drop my knitting needle when wrapping the yarn (right hand) and my other hand/fingers (left hand) are moving the stitches forward to be knit or purled. Both of my hands are moving at the same time in a smooth rhythm without every having to stop or let go of needles or yarn. Sort of like playing the piano with both hands while doing mathematical equations in my head. LOL

Yeah, I flick knit too. But then, I continue knitting with my left hand continental style, without turning my work or letting go of the work.

I have to agree with you. I knit roughly 34 sts in 30 seconds (so about 68 a minute, though I was timing while working a tinny sock). I knit English style with the needle in the web of my thumb and first finger, never dropping the needle. The knitting goes very fast. I can also knit well with the continental, combination or Portuguese methods but none of those are nearly as fast.

You all are adorable! I am a SLOW knitter trying to improve my speed so the title of your video caught my attention. I just watched a video of someone with the personality of a sponge who I was sure was going to bring out a metronome... your video was much more fun.

Hi ladies, just found your channel. I've been knitting since I was 5 and I think I'm pretty fast and an English knitter. Now because of watching you both I have to go time myself.I can usually knit a mans XL sweater in about 4 to 5 days. I look forward to watching more of your videos. You guys are great!

Barbara Plautz you beat me. I'm at 10 stitches per minute knitting Old English style. So slow. I've only been at this for 28 years. I picked up combination knitting because I'm a snail in knitting. Much faster but still slow.

My neighbor when I was younger, who also is the one who taught me how to crochet when I was 7 ( I just turned 52), would have a sweater done in 2 days. Her hands were like lightning! I was mesmerized. I taught myself how to knit 12 years ago, but mainly do shawls and hats/mittens. Been trying to teach myself how to flick but just can't get my hands to work with me lol., and I also find myself unknowingly switching between continental and throwing lol. I am however proud of myself for winning the fastest crocheting contest when I was 30 at a Michaels store. My daughter conned me into doing it. My nephew through the years has begged me to try to beat the world record, but I do not see that in my future as the carpal tunnel has really kicked in. Thanks for the tips. Definitely going to try them out :)

Fun video!! I knitted for years throwing, as they say. A new yarn shop had opened up right down from work, so I started taking classes on my lunch hour to learn things I was always reluctant to do. The owner knitted beautiful things and so fast, I noticed she knit continental style. I had her teach me and FORCED myself to do it. It was so hard to re-train myself, but I finally did it. She also taught me to work knitting stitches close to the end of the needles to gain speed. For 35+ years now, I have knitted continental. PS-It also helps with the sore wrists because you use your fingers so much.

paula carli Same here. I switched to Continental about 40 years ago and only use English style for stranded knitting; yarn in both hands. I love Continental but I’m glad to know both. I have no desire to knit fast. Just smooth and consistent.

My aunt Mary Krug who passed away towards the end of the 1970s was a knitting teacher and designer for I think Saks Fifth Avenue in Chicago, and I swear (I was in my teens in the 1960s) you couldn't see the top of her needles when she knit, even when she was knitting a color work sweater. Me, I like to just wander along as a slow knitter. I'm doing it for relaxation and fun. But how cool that there are such faster knitters out there!

I’m a slow, but happy knitter who knits English style. Have attempted continental, but never had success. It was always slower, tighter, and stressful. I’m happy being a relaxed knitter. 😉

I saw the Fair Isle knitters they knit 200 stitches per minute on straight needles and knit a sweater in a day. There is archival film. They used to knit while walking. It was their business and children started at a young age. Amazing!

I knit continental and knit pretty fast. Plus less strain. Also I’ve explored the Portuguese knitting too and it is great. Also less stressful on your hands. Awesome.

I'm a continental knitter and feel like I can be pretty fast at times but most of the time not - because I knit and pet, knit and pet. I have to constantly stop to admire my work - LOL!! I do what I call "scooping the yarn". My index finger tensions the yarn several inches away from the needle and so my right needle goes into the stitch and scoops the yarn through the stitch on the pad of my middle finger. When I purl continental, both my hands sort of move in unison like I was playing the cymbals. I'm not a fan of purling. When I do English or throwing - I have to tension my yarn in a really awkward way that defies explanation. I find that I can't do the really close to the needles type of tensioning no matter what style, nor can I flick. I've tried. But like so many others, I knit for relaxation. It's not a contest and at least for me - I knit for the process and not for the product. The product is icing on the cake and sometimes I like brownies, which is cake without frosting!!

Well I am slow but consistent. 27 stitches all three times, and that is knitting continental. I prefer slow knitting though I find it meditative. I often find myself counting the stitches in a slow meditative repeat in my head as I knit. The idea of speeding up stresses me out.

I’m a continental knitter though I’ve tried to teach myself English style and I just can’t get the hang of it. But I did this while my husband timed me and my average is 67 stitches per minute. 😅 Feelin’ pretty speedy!

There is a an old film of Shetland islanders knitting, when the film was slowed down they were reconded to be knitting 2-3 stitches per second.

I feel lucky bc I was taught to knit continental style but I have consciously adjusted and tweeked a few things over the years to make my hand motions more efficient. I'm pretty satisfied with my speed but, even better, my hand cramping and fatigue is minimal.

Ok I'm a continental knitter and I Portuguese knit when my hands hurt, it helps alot(!), and we did this in our yarn group last year, I came in 3 with 64 average and my best was 72. There where 20 of us, and We did it five times. The best in our group was a flicker and she clocked an average of 81 so ya she is very fast! I don't speed knit anymore because of my hands but it was very fun to see.

One brain trick that can speed up your knitting: instead of thinking about wrapping the yarn "around" the working needle, think of it as going "between" the two needles. That's what the yarn is doing and thinking of it this way can improve your speed, because you have more space in which to put the yarn and don't have to be as accurate in your yarn movements.

Hello from Florida! I am a transplanted New Englander and have been knitting since I was four years old, English style. I work off the tips of my needles, what they call “flicker”, and I do not throw the yarn. This is the way I was taught and I think it is actually faster than knitting Continental. One feature about it is that it tends to make your stitches tighter, at least for me, and the gauge therefore has to be adjusted. Usually I need to go up one or two needle sizes. However, really it comes down to “slow and steady wins the race” and not trying to win a marathon. I think accuracy is more important than speed. You need to slow down on tricky spots in a pattern and enjoy the process. For what it’s worth, I think working with cables rather than long needles can give you a bit of increase with speed. What it really comes down to is the quality of your finished piece and the pleasure you had in making it.

As a fast crocheter, I didn't enjoy knitting soooo slowly. Then the less I knitted, the slower I got. Ugh! So I learned Continental -Combination knitting, which is so much easier and faster that I can now enjoy knitting! And even purling!! 👵🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I got 74, 73, and 73 in 3 attempts back to back, so I guess about 73 stitches/minute at my fastest. I did it again at my "normal" speed and got 63 stitches. All those are just knit stitches, I'm sure I'd be slower if purling were included. I knit continental.

oh how fun to know our knitting speed. I always considered myself on the slow side of average. I knit 50 sts per minute, and I purl 46 sts per minute. :) I knit continental, picking not throwing :)

I gave up knitting for years, then spent a month learning how to Purl in Norwegian way of knitting. Seriously, the knitting wasn’t hard to learn, but purling took a month! I switched because this form of knitting doesn’t hurt my wrist or my shoulder and it’s way faster. Even though I knit meditatively, all my needle work endeavors are a time to slow down and relax, so having a way to more effortlessly turn out a project is a bonus for me. The only true tutorial for this way of knitting comes from Carlos and Arne here on RU-vid. They do not reply to comments, so I watched that couple of seconds with Arne over and over and over until I got it. I’ll never figure out what I was doing wrong, but I have it now thankfully.

I thought I was slow but but I knit about 1 sps, I have also dedicated myself to learning every style of knitting I can, I am now proficient in English, continental, mirror ( I reach my 1 sps doing continental as that feels most natural, I also picked up speed after I got the chiaogoo full set)

I can knit fairly fast if ive been going awhile and dont get interrupted. However, I would rather knit steady than fast, and often set a cadence with music, or even just my rocking chair. I seem to get far more done that way than trying for speed.

I love the Portuguese purling method; the simplicity of movement is beautiful. but when I am knitting I am a dedicated thrower, using my whole upper body. not efficient but it is what is comfortable for me

I got an average of 17, only a one point differential, so I’m slow but consistent! I was using a super bulky yarn with size 13 needles. I may try it again in a month or two! I’ve been knitting for almost a month, so it would be cool to see if I make any progress. Then also to try it with different kinds of stitches!

I started knitting a couple of years ago but I stopped because I did not know how to pick up a stitch. And I dropped them quite often. I resumed knitting a couple of days ago but that was because I heard about knitting Continental so I wanted to give it a try. I have not dropped one stitch since I've been knitting Continental (knock on wood). I found that not only is Continental MUCH faster for me but I'm more accurate with my stitches.🎉

"Isolate the movement to the hands and fingers". This is what I will work on today. I think I knit about 30 sts a minute. I only strive for economy of motion because I am missing the "fast" gene. I also start up an online metronome and try to keep up with the clicks, but if I can't that's okay.

I English knit at 90 sts per minute. Work at the tips. Just roll your hands instead of throwing the yarn around.

use a bit of baby powder or talcum powder on your hands and hooks! needles to make sure clammy hands dont mess with the speed! :D

That was so funny! I knit my socks inside out! Then l can allways purl and this l do portugisian style since 3 years! Works whenever l knit in stockinett. But when l knit potuguisian style after a while l am nearly as fast now! Yeah! And l'm disabled with my hands, it looks like if l had Parcinson, but it came from false medikaments l got for over 47years. Then, in a bad physical time, l had 2 surgeries behind the other. Together that made me flattering hands! Now see, what l am good for: 57 stitches a min. purling portugisian style, 51 stitches in knitting. Continental: 53 knitting, and 48 purling, russian style, the leg behind is easier to grap for me and it helps purling. If l knit like you it's 41 knitting, 39 purling. It's ok for me. But l'd like to train to get faster in each style I knit! Be blessed and stay healthy, with staying home if possible! Listen to the Doc Fauci or how he calls himself, not to Trump. I am just learning how to knit an want to know what continental is? Also what the difference in Portuguese Norwegian continental and iis German cast on and whatever long tail and short is a part of the continental way or what? Can you do a video of how they differ if you haven't already?so far I haven't done a project knitting and have only done one crocheting enough to learn I don't like crochet and am not patient enough to do it but in the mean time I learned of knitting which I actually feel very ignorant because I never knew about it and thought it was the same thing as crochet which is clearly way different and I don't feel they are connected at all but may lean why people say they are with more videos. I'm using a crayon green color yarn attempting fingerless mittens or gloves after seeing I didn't have enough for socks as I am as poor as you can get and not be homeless with no money to buy more. Can you tell me the consequences of not using the recommended size needles with the yarn you choose as I don't have the money to buy all the sizes in even regular needles let alone in circular, whatever the kind with the extension in the middle is called and double pointed (of which I haven't been able to get anyone of the 2 former kinds).I have circular I'm working with now and they are 3.5mm ...I think with a cheap green friendship bracelet type yarn I'm trying to make something small with maybe even a coster since it is very thin and keeps separating while I end up only getting half of it on my needle so I'm getting very frustrated but with how I half way learn to do things I get that's part of it so it's not a big deal. I apologise for the rambling I have a brain injury which caused tangential speech which is why I myself don't have a channel or website since I'd never be able to stop rambling.

Fun.. But.. I simply cannot Knit in the continental way.. So.. I’m a slow knitter.. Speed isn’t everything.. 😊

When you're doing miles and miles of garter stitch or even stockinette or reverse stockinette, you'll appreciate speed, and you don't have to speed knit with every project. I notice how much slower I work when glued to the tube with Downton Abbey; LOL. After much ado since 1970, and retired, of course, I've settled on the method that requires the least arm/hand movement and for me that's continental knit and the Russian purl through the front (which requires knitting through the back of the stitch on the next row.....untwisting the st/sts.....; very doable, of course.) When I get tired of knitting, I go crochet. @@

You don't need to knit continental to be fast. Hazel Tindall, who has held the title of world's fastest knitter (and maybe still does?), knits English. Look up "flicking". It's a way to knit English without letting go of the needles (like Jody shows, actually). If you can figure out how to keep tension to knit this way, you can practice minimizing your movements and get really fast. This is how I knit. I've never practiced for speed, but I've recently run across some videos of people knitting insanely fast like this, so .. now I'm inspired.
