I had one calcium oxalate stone after 10 years of low carb vegan diet. My first symptom was dark brown urine after a long exercise at the gym. It was painless but the urine color was abnormal. After drinking a lot it finally cleared up. The next day I went to the local clinic and the urine test showed a significant amount of red blood cells, so the bown urine was hematuria from the kidney (the intense exercise had caused the stone to detach from the kidney). I got a US the following day but it was clear, so my GP sent me for a low radiation contrast-free CT, which revealed a 3mm by 5mm stone stuck at the ureter near the bladder enterence (UVJ). The GP suggested I try and pass it on my own, but I opted for a URS, so he referred me to the local hospital and the urologist performed the ureteroscopy and removed the stone (procedure took 10 minutes under local anesthesia + sedation using propofol, just like a colonoscopy). I was very lucky to have a 100% painless kidney stone (except for the post-URS burning sensation for 2 days). This is because the stone was small enough to make it through the ureter in one day but not small enough to enter the bladder. Since then, I've increased my water intake by 100%, switched from vegan to vegeterian diet to get oxalate-free calcium, and started taking potassium citrate and chaca piedra daily. I also get a routine US once a year to make sure I don't have another stone forming.

Thank you. A year ago I had a 3mm stone and recently had pain twice within 2 weeks. I insisted on having a CT scan and there was a new stone 1.5mm. I don't remember passing the larger 3mm stone but in hindsight I think I know when I passed the more recent 1.5mm stone.

I can tell you why! The more green, leafy vegetables, vegetables in general that you eat the more susceptible you are to getting them. I know this because I’ve been carnivore and I’ve not had any kidney stones for almost 2 years and I thought oh my goodness I miss my celery and collard juice mix, and two weeks into drinking it I am bedridden with kidney stones! Vegetables are high in oxalates, and they are in my opinion the root cause! I will never eat them again unless they absolutely are like arugula with next to no oxalates. I’ve forgotten how miserable they are. Of course I thought I had a bladder infection first and Macrobid wasn’t working and then it dawned on me. oh my God, I think it’s a kidney stone.

Thank you for making this informational video. I just got my first stone about 5 weeks ago. I’m at the stage where I don’t have the terrible pain anymore but I’m still frequently urinating and have not been able to see if the stone actually passed. Mine is 5mm. Going to see my urologist in 2 days to get an ultrasound to confirm if the stone passed or is still there.
