My goal is to be able to play a halfway descent jazz style guitar. Its on my bucket list. I figure at 72 it will keep my mind and fingers sharp and mobile. You’re never too old to try something new!

The phrases and embellishments you're showing us strike a balance rare to find in a free video. So sophisticated, so usable. I have not found a guitar language tutorial I liked better. I can't wait to buy the book. Thank you, so much. Let me send you some money. I love it. I do want to transcribe more, but this is good stuff right here.

@richardsorice4509
@richardsorice4509 2 года назад
Wow, so awesome, Chase! I am pretty convinced that learning licks is the short cut to sounding better, not that, that is necessarily easy in any way. Yes, transcribing is better, but so freaking time consuming. I think people are afraid that if they learn these licks, that they will sound exactly like the other people who view this video and I think that is so wrong. Every person will glean different articulation and style and make it their own. Plus, trying to insert a lick on a gig, almost never works out well, LOL! This morning, I viewed a video I did on a restaurant gig 11 years ago. Trust me, fairly cringe worthy. My time was somewhat suspect and a lot of my lines didn't resolve well, because I did not have the vocabulary then that I have now, but I did outline the harmonies pretty well and I feel that my playing has improved a lot since then and especially since I retired from my day job 5 years ago. Having said that, I think my improvement has come in memorizing licks, tunes, and working with my metronome. With those improvements happening, I still sound like me, hopefully somewhat improved. Thanks for your channel. You do a great job!

This type of book already exists in Jerry Coker's "Patterns for Jazz" (50 years old, and now, free on the internet). He shows dozens of idiomatic or cliche melodic patterns in different variations, excerpted from the recorded solos of the "greats."
@ChaseMaddox
@ChaseMaddox 2 года назад
Not based specifically on the patterns and idiomatic phrases of jazz GUITARISTS though. Quite different.
@Malcolm.Y
@Malcolm.Y 2 года назад
@@ChaseMaddox QUITE different? Maybe a little different. Maybe better. When I was learning, one would have been concerned about getting boxed into playing "guitar licks." Guys like Joes Pass, Herb Ellis, and Barney Kessel - who didn't have a world of older guitar players to copy - received acclaim from "cats" regardless of instrument. But now, you only have have to sell guitar jazz to other guitarists. So, maybe you only need the Be or the Bop, but not both.

On one of your videos you mention jiu jitsu injuries. How do you feel your hands are doing with all the grip fighting etc. It seems to make my hands stiff. I am 51 and have been doing MMA type stuff all my life. My hands just don't work as well after too much jiu jitsu with gui. Just wondering if you have any tips too keep the hands and fingers loose and not become a death grip claw. Thank You
@ChaseMaddox
@ChaseMaddox 2 года назад
Great question. I’d say the first thing is you have to think about which of those activities are a priority for you. Obviously for me, making sure my hands can comfortably play guitar is my priority since that’s how I make my living. This means I do less sparring or focus on no-gi sparring more often. I also make sure to wrap my fingers for every sparring session and work with partners that know I’m a musician and don’t grip fight aggressively. That’s all I’ve come up with so far, but keep in mind I don’t have tons of experience in jiu jitsu. I’ve been training less than a year.
