How to Lift a Roof Top Tent Off Your Jeep with Plastic Pipe - SKETCHY!

In this video I demonstrate how not to get an ARB Roof Top Tent off the roof of the AutoEdit Jeep Wrangler Rubicon by building a make shift lift out of pvc pipe and rope.
It eventually worked and my helper, Pinto the Dog seemed to have a nice time! Now I'll figure out a safer way to get that tent back up there or just call some friends!

I recently decided to figure out how to mount and dismount my RTT on my lifted Jeep JKU. I have a Gobi stealth rack on it. I ended up using a drywall lifting stand from Harbor Freight. After some slight tweaks to the lift, it works perfectly for the task. Attaches to the side of the roof rack, then I slide the RTT on or off as needed. When not in use, I have the RTT hanging up in my garage. I wheel the lift under it to take it down as needed.

We use two 6x8x12 boards like you'd use to load a 4 wheeler into a pickup bed. Fasten two ramp ends on them and they sit right down on the roof rack. Once the tent is unbolted, it slides right down the ramp. To load it, I just hook the winch to the tent and pull it back up the ramp.

@bannablitz247
@bannablitz247 6 лет назад
Make something out of 2x4s that bolts together maybe using some tapped thin steel plates bent around the board or even tap the boards with the bolt and an impact and socket so you can take it apart somewhat. just make sure the widest part is vertical to better support weight. But you also need to make the sides and back connected at the bottom with a cross brace in the back. Maybe a diagonal on top as well.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 6 лет назад
Good suggestion. I just wanted to try this quick and dirty and kind of cheap attempt for the video.
@95racerx
@95racerx 6 лет назад
My idea and something that could be beneficial. Create a lift device that runs from the roofs of each shed that you drive through to get out. It could be build high enough to not hit anything on when driving under but still able to connect to the tent to get off.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 6 лет назад
Yep, that's a good suggestion! Thanks!
@95racerx
@95racerx 6 лет назад
You’re welcome. I was watching the video (and have seen previous) so I have noticed that your shed and tool shed are fairly close but far enough to drive through. If you could get something to go on the roof of each or attach to the sides of something, it work great for lifting off the tent. Same concept as the PVC version but a more permanent and stable solution! :) hope something works out! Love your videos and I love your Jeep!!
@justinlackey2478
@justinlackey2478 6 лет назад
If your house roof and the shed are in line you can just place 2 4x4s with cut ends so they rest evenly from one building to another. Then run the rope and pulleys from them. use some 2x4's to keep them from spreading and the whole thing can be bolted together and taken apart as needed. MUCH sturdier using the buildings as the "legs".

@HowieMurray
@HowieMurray 6 лет назад
Jason!! Dude!! Sketchy AF! Lol. Great effort though. So... more triangulation. Use a couple 45° T’s to go from the cross members of the top frame to the legs. I’d box in the bottom of the frame as well on three sides so you can hold the legs together but still drive the Jeep out. And more triangulation again in the corners using the 45° connectors. Also... two more pulleys and just hook four ropes with four hooks to the four corners of the tent. I’d also consider upgrading to the black ABS pipe for “SSTLF 2.0” (super sketchy tent lifting frame)
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 6 лет назад
Ha! Thanks... I was going to buy a bunch more stuff but it was getting expensive for how quick and dirty I wanted to try and get this done. I didn't realize the black pipe was stronger... almost bought that stuff.
@HowieMurray
@HowieMurray 6 лет назад
autoedit haha. All good man. Love your videos on the Jeep. It’s been keeping me occupied while I’m over here in Nigeria. 4 more days and i get back to my 2014 JKU. Pinto is awesome by the way.. reminds me of my kaylee for temperament. I’ve been meaning to comment but wanted to get caught up to present day. I highly recommend Kargo access steps for your door hinges if you want easier access to the roof rack. If you didn’t want to spend a lot more but reinforce what you have you could try Aircraft cable and turnbuckles for tensioning. Use bolts run through the tube with a cable size hole drilled crosswise in the end of the threads and a big fender washer on either side of the pipe precurved to the pipe curvature through the clever use of a ball peen hammer and repeated striking. An anvil would be of great help there but you could just whackem as they sit on a work bench or a vice. For that matter just bend em with a pair of pliers! Make the bolts long enough to seat the nut and still have more thread and the cable hole exposed. Mount the bolts through the beefy section of the joints and then about halfway down the legs. Right where you think they flex the most. If you did that and had additional pipe on three sides at the bottom. You’d probably do ok for the sketchiest tent hoist structure awards. Probably take second at least.🤪
@48shamrock
@48shamrock 6 лет назад
Howie Murray Came here to add this! 90s on the sides (to stabilize front to back) and 45 tees to triangulate the wobble might be worth a shot. It'd get a like/view from me for sure!

You were headed in the right direction... I think if your 'square' at the top was smaller, to start. Then the legs were splayed more, with supports halfway up and at the bottom so from the sides, the legs made a trapezoid shape. It would still want to wiggle side to side. Oh, yeah.. use four pulleys. By the time you made enough modifications for this to work it would probably be cheaper to buy a proper lift!
