It all Started back in the early 1950's Frank McEnroe had a food stall at the Wagga Wagga Show or Fair. He invented the Chiko Roll. You wont find any nutritionists prescribing a Chiko Roll, its not served with a salad, in fact its the arch enemy of healthy food. It is served with a dangerous amount of salt in its own printed wrapper, a crisp chewy deep fried outer shell contains ??????? Thats right we have debunked the mystery of the Australian Chiko Roll AAANNNDDD cooked it the $29 Kmart Sausage Roll Maker. So go grab a double malted chocolate Milkshake and a bag of potato chips (fries) doused in Chicken Salt and settle in to find out....Whats in your Chiko Roll!

I’ve heard of Lumpia but somehow I had it in my head it was a fish. Off to check it out now, I learn so much from my viewers, thanks you for sharing your suggestion. We had a Philippine Supermarket nearby but it is now permanently closed , another casualty of the massive floods. I used to buy my Asian supplies there and the lady was very friendly and helpful. I’m really going to miss her and her little store. I guess I’ll just have to google it and check it out myself now. Thanks for watching.;-))

the short cord is to stop children pulling the appliance off the counter top and burning themselves on a hot appliance.
@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 9 месяцев назад
Thank you for you feedback, not every kitchen has the power outlets ideally placed. I never leave power cords trailing forward of an appliance or allow the appliances to be situated forward on a counter top. When cooking around children or even with children they should be thoroughly supervised and important safety features instilled in them. There are plenty of dangers to be found in a kitchen and I suspect the shortness of the power cords on most budget appliances has more to do with cost cutting than children’s safety around very hot surfaces. The inconvenience of being unable to reach outlets with short cords , the necessity in some cases to use extension cords to extend the length of the cord for convenient use is more dangerous both for user and requiring excess cord to be stored away from the hot appliance, so it doesn’t melt and place unnecessary voltage strain on a cord which may not be rated for the job. I have been cooking around and with children for more than 50 years and have fortunately never had the experience you describe. I have obviously been lucky. So many kitchen related practices are just commonsense, never let a pot or pan handle extend forward beyond a benchtop. Never leave hot water in a tap for the next person to Burn themselves unexpectedly. Place hot foods to cool out of reach and never ever leave anything unattended without switching it off, in case you are inadvertently distracted. Never place sharp knives in a dishwasher or a sink full of soapy water, hang onto it, wash it and place it under the dish drainer to drain before wiping and storing in either a knife block or dedicated knife drawer. So many simple practices can be used to ensure greater safety in an around a kitchen. These are just a few things I routinely do to protect myself and my family. Good habits prevent potential future problems. I honestly believe that unnecessarily short cords are more dangerous than those of an adequate length but that is,of course, my own personal opinion, based purely on my experience and has nothing to do with any scientific basis or marketing strategy. I thank you very much for your thought provoking feedback and for watching.;-))

Thank you very much Linda, it will be a bit more like a spring roll but it will work well. We made Baklava and Spanikopita and the FILO cooks well, browns and crisps well and doesn’t become soggy which is surprising given that it cooked inside a sealed closed sausage roll maker or pie maker. We love Adelaide, buying a caravan this week, can’t wait to take it back to Adelaide for a holiday in it. Hi Cheekyricho. You really should have called these Cheeko Rolls... Lol. A bit involved this one. Difficulty 7/10. I think Mountain Bread would be less fiddley than those spring roll wrappers. Pork mince with Vegatta chicken stock powder and Kecap Manis would be my choice to add to the ingredients. Thanks for the inspiration once again. What I've found popular amongst the finger food munchers is to cut Chiko's into slices and serve with Hommus and or soy sauce.
@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 3 года назад
Cheeko Rolls Lol, you crack me up. Yes it did involve a few more steps. I did try with a thin whole meal wrap but it sort of cracked and broke up a bit, the filling didn’t hold in as well. Just the spring roll pastry was too crispy and not thick enough, this got about as close to the right consistency of the experiments I tried. Your version sounds great, sweet, savoury and you can’t beat lean pork. I had the ingredients list but no measurements do it was a bit of a wing it dinner but it was very nice and I served it with Sweet Chilli Sauce but I would never have thought of Hommus, now I want to make another batch to give that a whirl lol. I’m glad you liked my idea, thanks for watching and the great feedback.;-))

You most certainly can and I have. Half the fun of these great little counter top appliances is find all the new ways to use them. They are fantastic for using up last nights left overs and don’t forget as the Late Margaret Fulton once said”it’s not left overs if you add another fresh ingredient!” Curries, stews, casseroles, baked dinners, fruit, puddings anything . Can you Sausage Roll it? My word you can! Have fun. Thanks for watching.;-))

@wayneclarke5480 3 года назад
Hi you can always double rap the spring roll rapper
@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 3 года назад
Yes you certainly can Wayne and that would be a perfect spring roll, I was after the crisp texture with the chewy quality in the skin, after a bit of trial and error , I think this was about the closest, to the commercially produced variety, we could make, that could be easily replicated in the home kitchen. We do the testing so our viewers don’t have too. I was also after a healthier version of an Aussie Iconic Snack. Thanks for your feedback and for watching, your suggestion is a much easier and simpler version. Thank you for sharing and for watching.;-))

Thank you for your question Shirley, this is a Kmart brand a sausage roll maker. It is a 240 volt appliance which is what our electricity supply is here in Australia. I know you don’t have many if any Kmarts, where you live my my US viewers have found something called a corn dog maker on Amazon, there is also something called a pastry maker that might be similar to my model. I hope you can find one, they are so versatile and a great way to use up leftovers. I use mine for so many things, I didn’t think I would but my viewers requested I get one to share my ideas and it has been fantastic. I really appreciate you sharing where you live, I always find that information very interesting. Just prior to Covid we travelled to your beautiful state and absolutely loved it. The buildings were spectacular particularly the Capital Building, so much more beautiful in real life, I didn’t realise it was marble, photos look like painted concrete. We went to several of the museums, the Pentagon Arlington and out to Dulles Airfield. It was a rushed trip but I would return in a heartbeat, we absolutely adored the east coast and can’t wait to return to explore the southern east coast. Thanks for watching and the great feedback. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺’downunder’;-))

@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 3 года назад
So you are familiar with some of our local foods, not many first timers like vegemite, probably because they make the mistake of slathering it on like peanut butter. It’s actually the thinnest scrape on hot buttered toast, we grew up eating it so we are used to it. I don’t think many Australians would have grown up without having eaten a Chiko Roll, I don’t know where the name came from because it doesn’t contain any chicken, it’s our equivalent to a Corn dog, I suppose, County Fair Food. I’m glad you got to learn something different about us and our lifestyle. Hope you are having a lovely weekend and you are still staying safe and healthy. Take good care of yourself my sweet Californian friend.

Haha, here I am looking for the ingredients and formulating a way of producing a healthier version that you both make at home and make in a sausage roll maker. It takes a different set of hormones to remember the chick with the long legs and all the motorbikes, lol, I just googled it and can describe the taste, the texture, the colour of the wrapper and how they opened the packet with tongs before sliding the Chiko Roll into with a hefty shake of salt. I just don’t remember the Babe on the Bike. I probably wasn’t the targeted audience, the marketing people had in mind . Thanks for the fun comment and for watching.;-))

Ahh Caitlin, a little bit of Australian History here. Another interesting Australian invention, the good old Chiko Roll, a local takeout shop institution. The sausage roll maker does a wonderful job of this recipe and would be perfect for your Hmong Egg Rolls as well. Without the need for a deep fryer it would be a healthier version as well. Cooked through with an all round crispy shell. Held in a perfect shape and well sealed would indeed make a handy to eat tasty treat. I must make a version for you to highlight another easy recipe in the sausage roll maker. Thank you very much for the suggestion. Maybe the Corn Dog maker available in the US would be a suitable alternative. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the subject and I’m sure our North American viewers would be keen to know as well. chiko roll is 4% beef, ur portions are outta whack mate
@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 3 года назад
You’re absolutely correct Scotty, 4% beef plus an unknown quantity of animal fat. My beef portion did include an unknown quantity of animal fat. There was no sugar, hydrolysed vegetable protein, soy, emulsifiers or chemicals in my version. It’s not deep fried in oil either. I cook food for flavour not for profit. I’m a cook not a chemist. Anything I cook for my channel, has ingredients, which can be easily obtained by our viewers to replicate at home. This recipe used the Kmart sausage roll maker to show the versatility of the the appliance, sharing a bit of iconic Australian historical cuisine with the rest of the world and a much healthier version of that Aussie snack food. Feel free to add all the starches, fats, cereals and unnecessary fillers that are present in a commercially produced Chiko Roll , to get that greasy, stodgy, ‘spot the almost invisible meat’ mouth feel or you could try our healthier crisp yet chewy outer shell filled with all Australian beef, vegetables and barley sans the crap. My version is probably more expensive to produce but certainly cheaper than the local takeaway, to buy. I thank you very much for your accurate feedback, I’m sure our viewers will find it enlightening and helpful as well. We hope you stay safe and healthy and make 2021 your best year yet.
