In singapore a classic breakfast is two half boiled eggs eaten with pepper and dark soy sauce, along with kaya (coconut pandan jam) toast. You usually drink hot milk tea, coffee or milo (chocolate malt drink).

There's this thing called nasi lemak which literally translates to "fatty rice" (nasi - rice, lemak - fat) in Malaysia. So basically the rice is cooked in coconut milk - hence the fat, and is generally eaten with sambal (a chili paste), cucumber, eggs, peanuts and anchovies. It sounds like a lot but really a normal wrap is hardly any bigger than your hand. The fancy version can include any sort of meat like chicken or beef. It's the best thing ever. Ya'll really gotta try this.

Haha, I can relate to the ramen. But I can't stomach more than a protein shake in the mornings. Because if I try to eat ANYTHING heavy.... my stomach gets angry at me. So high gram protein dark chocolate shakes are it :) Also, try maybe adding some veggies, curry powder, or even different types of meat if you can afford it to your ramen. It changes the flavor but it tastes so good!

dude porridge and pasta super cheap, more filling, and while it isn't as quick as instant Ramen, you just dump everything into a pot which should only take 10-15and like it could for 30-40 min while you do something else.

+Simon and Martina in Ireland we have something called "the full Irish" which is basically a huge plate of food consisting of rashers, bangers, black pudding, white pudding, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, potatoes and Irish beans. a rasher is Ireland's way of saying a slice of bacon. Bangers are Irish sausages. We also have Boxty which is just a potato pancake which I personally love. Black pudding is well...blood pudding. White pudding is black pudding without the blood and It's usually served with Irish brown bread or soda bread.

I have a latte-bowl full of cacao with 5-6 pieces of Zwieback (german biscotti) dipped into it and some fruit. Fancy breakfast (= weekend breakfast) is coffee, fresh orange juice, 1-2 freshly baked Brötchen (bread buns?) with butter and jam, honey, cheese, graved salmon or deli meat, a medium boiled egg with herring roe, some fruit, fruit-yogurt or fruit-quark, maybe a cornichon. And enough time to enjoy it all.

@Nedalin
@Nedalin 8 лет назад
+Mihuhi 😆 You're cute. Actually, that is not that much and a very normal german breakfast (apart from the herring roe). Notice how i used a lot of OR? Food wise, think medium bento, thats about the amount of food i take in. And time is a big factor. I am also not a great eater in the morning, that's why my everyday breakfast is virtually liquid.
@KyanneSummer
@KyanneSummer 8 лет назад
+Mihuhi - actually it is very tiring for the digestive system to eat so much in the morning because the body detoxifies until 12.00 so when is tries to detoxify you stop all that and you dump all that stuff on it and you begin your day quite heavy actually

Cut cucumber in half lengthwise, and then chop into 1/4-1/2 inch bite-sized half-circles. Toss with the sauce. Let sit for 1 hour. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Serve.

When I lived in Japan, my hostmom made what I called surprise-breakfast everyday. What that means is that you'd have literally no idea what breakfast would be. Some days, it'd be scrambled eggs and toast. Some days, it'd be onigiri. Some days, it'd be a cute breakfast bento box. But some days, she'd do something completely random, like leftover okonomiyaki or soba noodles. But I think the absolutely weirdest thing she ever made for breakfast was spaghetti with a tomato sauce. Like, I know that she'd eat whatever for breakfast, but spaghetti just seemed so weird to me. I mean, I ate it anyway, so who am I to judge.

It depends on how much time we have for breakfast. On the weekends with more time usually an omelette with freshly made beans, maybe some potatoes with chorizo, salsa my mom made and eaten with tortillas.

Luxury breakfast for me would be the breakfast my family makes for Christmas Day and Easter. On Christmas Day we have latkes (no we're not Jewish, but who doesn't like fried potatoes?), panetonne en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panettone which is a special Italian bread that you eat around Christmas (it's sweet and has almost a cakey density to it and it's usually filled with raisins and other candied fruits), creme fraiche, a fritatta, bacon, and a fruit salad. On Easter we have a lot of similar stuff, like the fritatta and bacon, but Easter is the special time of year where we get arancini, which are deep fried risotto rice balls and holy shit they're amazing. There are lots of different styles of arancini, but usually they're filled with some combination of mozzarella cheese, peas, and/or meat and tomato sauce. My family just puts cheese in ours, and I can honestly say I look forward to arancini every year.

In Indonesia, we're not afraid to chomp down on carbs for breakfast early in the morning :) Nasi Goreng (friend rice), Nasi Uduk (Coconut Milk with assorted side dishes), Gado-Gado (a sort of salad with peanut sauce), Ketoprak (almost similar to gado-gado but usually with an additional rice vermicelli + peanut sauce), Bubur Ayam (Chicken porridge with various toppings). * My parents usually buy those dishes from street vendors, we don't actually make them for breakfast because again, too much work. But we don't buy them that often haha. We usually eat bread + coffee / cereal for breakfast , lol.

Southern people often have hash (diced fried potatoes with onions and seasonings [the most popular are garlic and/Or rosemary]) with ketchup or mustard. Then eggs however you want them (overeasy, sunny side up, scrambled). We also have grits. Its a corn meal similar to oatmeal, cream of wheat, or couscous. THIS is how you can tell if someone is Southern or Northern. Southern people do not regularly eat oatmeal or cream of wheat. Metro area eats oatmeal and some country/mountain people, but I have never eaten cream of wheat for breakfast. Ever. Sacralidge. You eat grits. If you're further inland you often eat it with butter, bacon bits, cream, sea salt-- smear it on your toast or stuff your biscuits with sausage and dip them in it. If you're at the coast you can afford to put seafood in it. Shrimp grits can be eaten all day. Then sausages (small bangers usually of the maple syrup variety or hickory) and/or bacon (American style strips cured in various seasonings like maple syrup, honey, or hickory). If you want the Canadian style bacon we either don't have it or it is sliced ham (honey ham is my favorite) cold cut or sauteed. Bacon is a big deal in Southern states, but sausage even more. Louisiana in particular with its unusal ethnic mishmash has, in my opinion, the best sausage I ever ate. If you don't have hash, you have hashbrowns which are shredded potato (usually of the day brown Idaho variety or ones local to your region) that can be pressed and fried into cakes. Skins or no skins by preference. Or left loose. Then they are smothered/covered/slathered. Meaning gravy (there are fights over white gravy versus brown), diced Spam, onions (green or sauteed), tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, garlic, mushrooms, ketchup (also called katsup), etc. It's the equivalent to the Japanese -don. It's preferential to region, clan, family, and state. Then you have biscuits for dipping or stuffing. Buttermilk are common in my family. Or cornbread (also a fight over savory or sweetened with honey or cinnamon). Traditionally breads are served with fruit preserves, jam, or jelly. I prefer jam myself. We also pair it with butters (dairy or fruit butters) or creams. Its also common to have French toast. Or cinnamon and sugar bread. Or a hearty baked bread like banana or zucchini or multigrain. Then milk, orange juice, coffee, hot tea, apple or grape juice. My grandfather drinks plum or (like my dad) grapefruit juice. Usually you pair a fruit drink with a hot drink. Sometimes people drink a glass of milk with their orange juice. The milk helps with the spicy or heavier things like the biscuits. The hot drinks warm you up in the colder months. The juices are refreshing and help wake you up and clear your tongue. We also eat more widespread and common things. Like that oatmeal. Or cereals. Some people also drink different kinds of milk. Goat, coconut, soy, pistachio, cashew, etc. However, this is specific to regions. Each state has its own ethnic makeup. The breakfast I just described is "Southern", meaning people have been eating it this way for over a hundred and fifty years. The melting pot brought a combination of German, Dutch, Irish/Scotts-Irish, Scottish, West African, English, Spanish, and French cousine to the southern states who were already populated by indigenous tribes (Choctaw, Creek, Cherokee, Seminole, Chicksaw, Chesapeake, Pensicola, Atsina, Powhatan, etc). Our ancestors didn't eat tomatoes, pumpkin, corn, or many of the beans and shoots native to the South until then. Many hadn't eaten the food ethnic to the their new neighbors. Then everybody shared their cooking style and now you get this. Metro people have access to more hard to find items like non dairy milks. But country people usually have access to fresher fruit and vegetables (grown from the farms or gardens of neighbors). There are also farmers markets and fairs. So, as you can see, food is a big deal in the South. Sunday morning breakfast was the big breakfast. Every other day was what was quick and easy (grits, toast, fruit, cereal). But at least one day out of the week families will have big breakfasts, inviting relative or practically relatives over to share and commune. All meals in the Southern diet can do this, but breakfast in particular is important. If anyone thinks this is a bit too much food, remember that until recently most Southern people were farmers, industrial workers, or ranchers. We needed the heavy carbs, protein, caffine, and fruit sugars to get through the day until lunch (or linner as my family joked-- it being too far passed lunch time but not time for dinner and/or supper). Think of us like hobbits and it'll make more sense. Not that we eat six or seven meals a day, but that we space our meals out into communal ones and personal pauses in work to get a bite to eat before going back to it.

I grew up in Florida. (Though, despite it being considered the south, Florida really doesn't have a strong "southern" culture, haha...) However, my family is all from the north! If I ate a hot cereal in the morning, it was always cream of wheat or something similar. I had never eaten grits in my life until last year. I still love cream of wheat, but I can't do sweets in the morning and making it savory was way too bizarre. So grits have been a huge answer to my savory breakfast prayers. I can't believe I'd never had it until recently. I still don't have the time to make a proper pot most mornings (and the instant stuff is AWFUL) but lordy. I'm the only one in my family who appreciates grits. Everyone else thinks I'm weird for embracing this southern staple. 8P

"sacralidge" ? HAHA how did you slip that one by the autocorrect? Also, your essay failed to mention country ham. And the fact that "country people," however you define that, will most likely shop at Walmart, which carries all kinds of non dairy milks.

Food looks great, and I would eat that for breakfast too, but I agree that it's too much time/work when you are trying to eat and get out the door. A western hot breakfast with a couple fried eggs, some previously-cooked/reheated bacon, and toast is much faster (5 min maybe). Throw in some "to-go" fruit like a banana, a cup of coffee as well, and that's a pretty balanced, equally as flavorful, faster meal. Making an breakfast strata for the week is probably the fastest/most complete breakfast meal. Pop in the microwave for a minute and you're good to go/travel with.

But when I want to indulge myself, I prepare some black tea, fruit juice, toast, salty cheese (like feta), some veggies (like cucumbers, tomatoes or radish) and some oil, salt and pepper for seasoning the toast. It's very popular the combination of bread spread with tomato, salt and oil and sometimes with some fresh garlic too!
