wow! it's beautiful! I was making face masks for the needy to donate and when I had time I was doing some other small projects like bowl cozies, cushion cover and I have collected a lot of scraps. So I thought of starting a quilt for my twin grand babies which I have been putting off for 2 years. I was scared to even start them. I used to think what if I didn't like it , what if I finished one some how and didn't want to do another one, or what if it didn't turn out good. I have collected a lot of fabric pieces for years but no luck. This year I started quilting and have already made two quilts but now I want to do something for my son. He likes quilts so here I found something! This will be the easiest way to do something for him with the scraps and that will look nice too.

Thanks for the perfect inspiration. I am wanting to border a log cabin with all the "logs" left over and I think they would be perfect as a border. I'll use 6 1/2 size. If I love it, I'll use them for the log cabin border, and if I don't love it, I'll make an entire quilt with the string logs. I bet it will look great either way! And I'll use what's in the "good trash" saved just for this technique.

I used the pellon wedding aisle runner from my daughters wedding 17 years ago. I cut the squares 13 inches. I then drew a diagonal pencil line the moved over 1 inch and drew another line on each side of the center line. I have 11 patriotic blocks for QOV. This works great. Thank you so much.

I'm so glad I've discovered your videos! I've shared them with friends. Great tutorial voice and presentation. I Love your block and colors. I am excited to do some string blocks and put some scraps to use. (I take all my trimmings that are too small to use and throw them into an old pillowcase - bought at the thrift store or army surplus - sew the top closed when it's full enough and donate to an animal shelter for pet beds. No waste and the little animals get a warm mat to lay on ;) ) Thanks for sharing!

I make dog beds for shelter dogs and cats. I get scrapes from my sewing buddies and make blankets and dog beds. I use batting then sew the blocks together. I make a pillow to go inside with all small scrapes. Been doing this for years. Great way to get rid of scrapes.

For a guideline, when making up the 12.5" scrappy strip blocks I draw a diagonal line from corner to corner to line up the first set of strips on the white backing piece of fabric before pinning them down. They seem to come out straighter that way, and I can watch and make sure that they don't shift out of place when being sewn down.

Oh Mary, you really do need a cutting mat and rotary blade cutter! I cannot imagine myself making quilt squares without it! :) Look for sales at Joann's Fabrics or other, and grab that 50% off one item coupon, and nab a cutting mat and rotary cutter!

I started this project! I have tons of fabric and bought the muslin for the backing of each block. This is a great project; I have adult ADHD and I can actually focus on this! I'm "multi-tasking"- trying to paint a room, do laundry, and spray-paint a ceiling fan. I will do a task and then come back to cutting and sewing my squares. I figure I need 255 six-inch squares. I am at 106. This is very tedious, but I love how it makes me focus and plot and experiment with colours and patterns. For me quilting is like doing a puzzle...only I don't know what it will look like until it's complete! Ha!

What a scrap buster! I would think it would be a pretty bulky once you stared sewing the blocks together. Im going to give this pattern a shot but i think i woukd just sew the strips to cover a 5 1/2-6" ruler. Trim once i know it covers it completely. Thanks for sharing!

actually not as bulky as you would think -- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5TePHGq8WPI.html I use a 1" sashing and the blocks just butt up next to each other. NOT using a foundation is one of my goals for this year. Looking forward to giving it a try. Hello and Happy New Year. I wanna know what u do with the scrap from those string quilts? Thanks
@rouen1431
@rouen1431 4 года назад
I had never made a quilt. It was a fence rail strip making type that required 2.5 X 42" strips. I was getting very frustrated and upset with moving mat/fabric thus creating uneven cuts. My husband ran and got his steel framed leveler and strip making became a breeze after that. The width of the level was exactly 2.5 and running the rotary along the edge of the level made a sweet and perfect strip.
