I've been meaning to make one of these dim bulb current limiters for ages! The time has come, so I thought I may as well film it and explain how it's used and why it is so handy!

Also, I now have an Amazon storefront where I share links to assorted tools & equipment I use and recommend. As well, I'll be adding links for various supplies and products used in my videos as time goes on. Even if you purchase something on Amazon totally unrelated after entering through one of my links, it really helps support my channel with a small commission.. and it costs you nothing extra at all! 😊👍
Thanks for watching!

@@TheUltimateRecycler Shhh! We won't mention that the old bakerlite sockets and plugs are not to current code but they certainly look better than the default white used these days! 😝

An electrical video with bakelite hardware, love it! Never seen one of those Clipsal switches. My house has all Ring-Grip. Got a Clipsal 240v Australian made socket that is the same as the US Pin layout in my collection. If you end up staining the wooden block walnut is what they used. Will have to email you a photo of mine :)
@TheUltimateRecycler

Thanks Hugh, yeah those Clipsal ones are a little unusual.

Nice retro look. I remember those old Bakelite fittings mounted on a piece of wood just like that. Even better when its all made out bits out of the junk box for free and looks cooler than one you can make out of new things.

A handy little unit! This video ties in well with your router video... The only change I'd make, would be to mark the switch as a 'bypass' in some way, which would make sense with the On and Off.

The light bulb is in series with the appliance, so for higher wattage appliances you install a LOWER wattage bulb. Sounds counter intuitive but that is the way it works for this application.

very rustic, almost steam punk. throw some unnecessary gears and brass valves and it will be complete!! Nice video, and great explanation to how the dim bulb tester works. Thanks

Thanks so much for sharing your very clear explanation of this project. I have been thinking of making one of these, but first I wanted to understand how it worked. Understanding the principles involved is crucial to working with electricity. Cheers.

Hi Chris, this is a brilliantly detailed project, I’ve been looking how to make one of these, but a lot of the videos I’ve seen, are overseas and very hard to follow, as you are in Oz like I am also, it’s great to find this little treasure video, keep up the great videos mate. 🤙🏼🇦🇺 Joe from Australia 🤙🏼🇦🇺

Well Chris for better or worse I feel you have taken some of the excitement and adrenaline out of device testing now that I know about the dim bulb tester. On the other hand I'm getting to the point in my life where a house fire is not as exciting as it once was. I plan to build one of these as just a short cord with a bulb socket and no switch to save space.
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler Год назад
Thanks Nas but I am a little concerned that there was a time when house fires were exciting! 🤣🤣

Lovely demonstration, Mr Chris, I like it. I wonder whether it might be interesting to put a big current ammeter in series with the lightbulb to monitor what's happening? Oh, I have now watched to the end, and see you are thinking of that already. I think I'll see if I have such a meter to put in series in my one. Thank you very much for this elegant explanation!

"Watt?", asked a simple subscriber? Chris was in his shorts & the testing subscriber continued, "Do you like to cook & bake lite?" Chris was neutral & replied, "I wood if I cord, but I channel my work into dim ... sims." "Float the profits around the globe!" "You're really bright & wired" said the subscriber. "You need protection."
