This is a traditional Malaysian Chinese yellow rice also known as turmeric rice or "nasi kunyit" in Malay language. It is creamy and rich flavoured with coconut milk and cream and perfect to eat with curry. The rice is made using glutinous rice, most commonly known in Southeast Asia as sticky rice. This sticky rice or yellow rice is significant to Malaysian Chinese families when the baby reaches his/her first month. The tradition is not as widely practiced in modern days as I once knew where I grew up in Penang, Malaysia. It was traditionally cooked by the baby's family and the sticky rice or yellow rice was given as a gift to relatives and friends. This type of sticky rice or yellow rice is easy to make in your own home to share with your family and friends. Hope you enjoy this week "how to make sticky rice" recipe and video.
Just a word of caution if you have never used turmeric before. It can stain your clothes. So be very careful when you are using turmeric.

Hi Bro. I am a Malay guy from Selangor. Glad to see how you cook it. It reminds me of my ex-boss, Mr Eric Chan, 30 years ago. Now, I am 54 years old. He gave all of us a packet of the Nasi Kunyit @ Pulut Kuning along with the Rendang during the celebration of the first month of his newborn baby. The memory still remains, Bro...

Hi Abang @Suhaimi Nazaruddin. Absolute treasure..our Malaysian culture and heritage. 30 years ago isn’t that long. Happy to hear your ex-boss is still practicing his Chinese Nyonya tradition. It’s extremely rare nowadays. Thanks for sharing your story. Cheers, Victor

I just made many batches of this for my niece's full moon anniversary today (having never tried nasi kunyit before). The uncles and aunts we gave the rice to all said it tasted very good and authentic. Thank you for the recipe and the clear instructions!

Making this recipe again this weekend, but this time for my own first baby’s 100 day celebration! Glad to have this resource to refer to 3 years later! Makes me happy to keep the tradition alive (with my mom’s help) over here in Canada! Does the rice keep well overnight in the fridge? Or should I make it fresh the day of?

Thank you for this simple recipe! I was suddenly craving for this with curry chicken so I figured I’ll search for a recipe so I could make it sometime this month ☺️ I used to have this whenever the datuk gong temple just around the corner of my house has it’s prayers. Looking at your finished dish makes me miss home ☺️

Thank you Victor: Enjoy your vids. I f I cook turmeric rice in a stailess steel pot will it stain the pot?
@foodtripwithvictor
@foodtripwithvictor 2 года назад
Thanks @Jo Mo..glad you’re enjoy watching my video contents. I’ve cooked turmeric rice using my SS pot. I never had any issue staining the pot based on my experience. I can only think of a possibility staining the pot if it has deep scratches that could trap the colouring. Or if you’ve discolored your pot, try Google to find out how you can remove it. Eg, soaking in soapy water. I’m sure you can find good articles out there. Cheers, Victor
