Does it matter if it is made of aluminum?

Hi , aluminium needs a special type of solder so wouldn't work in my opinion for general pcb's . Thanks for your question 👍

One of the great things about making your own is the insulation on the wire allows you to hold it steady and move it with agility without getting burned- something the spool doesn't really allow. 👍

@mrsolderfix3996
@mrsolderfix3996 Год назад
Hi , thank you for your comment, much appreciated. I'm glad you enjoy the videos. As for your gold connectors, they would normally solder pretty easily in my experience, do use flux though if you can as without it the job definitely becomes harder and you won't get as good a finish . If the solder for some reason doesn't take to the connector just try scuffing up the area with end of a scalpel or needle file to give a rough surface , but I don't think you'll need to do this . Thanks again , and good luck with all of your soldering projects 👍

Try silicone "noodle" wire it has much finer standing than conventional hookup wire (which is why it's so flexible). It's widely used in electric R/C to hook up the batteries, ESC and motor. The extra fine wire strands make it very susceptible to wicking which is why some people will crimp bootlace ferrules onto the ends and then solder the ferrule (solder can't wick through the crimp or at least it takes a long time). But this also makes it extremely good solder wick.

Hi , thank you for your comment. Personally I am not a fan of solder suckers ( never have been ) , but I do know a few people ( not many to be honest ) who prefer them . I just find solder braid so much better and more flexible to get into certain tight areas so that's why I use it , it does everything I ever need. So I always say to people to use what they prefer , I would never insist someone does it my way . Hope that helps , thanks again , take care 👍

What about separating all the wire strands in a lamp cord and actually braiding them together? Like hair… Or make a crochet desolder towel soaked in flux. My girlfriend likes to crochet, ill see if she wants to crochet me some desolder blankeys.😊 On the real though, I think buying desolder braided wick is a complete waste of money when anyone who solders stuff semi-frequently most likely has scrap copper lamp cord to their disposal and it works just as well. Also, if you’re good at thinking ahead, you can pretty much tin wires just by desoldering at the same time. You save money on solder and the cord you are running is pretty much your desolder wick. I’m a cheap skate though and nothing prevents me from picking up a face down penny off the ground, so…. Yeah. 😊 On a separate note, I heard you can use Vaseline as flux. Does this mean you can use other similar stuff like bag balm, carmex, chapstick, etc? What makes Vaseline work like flux?

are you using a liquid flux
@mrsolderfix3996
@mrsolderfix3996 Год назад
Hi , yes I use a flux called SMFL200D which is liquid , comes in an aerosol can. I simply decant some into a small pot then apply with a dipped cable tie. Unfortunately this flux has just become discontinued so I will be using a similar one that RS Components sell , 494 -764 is the code number for it. It's a lot dearer than the SMFL one which is a bit annoying. Hope that helps 👍

Where do you get your SMFL200D flux from now - is it really discontinued?
@mrsolderfix3996
@mrsolderfix3996 Год назад
Hi , thank you for your comment, much appreciated. Yes the SMFL200D flux I've been using for many years is now discontinued. R.S Components do a similar rework flux that comes in the same size can , same aerosol format etc . The only trouble is the price has nearly doubled from what the SMFL one was. It's £24 + vat I believe. I will still get one as it lasts ages and is in the format I like , as I squirt some into a small lid and use a dipped cable tie to apply . If you were interested in this flux go to RS Components website and use code 494 - 764. Hope that helps 👍

@@mrsolderfix3996 Have you used that RS stuff? I just thought I'd let you know, the RS flux seems to flash off pretty quickly - certainly quicker than what appears on your videos, and a fair bit less viscous... The tacky Amtech flux I've used previously seems to hang around a lot longer and not sizzle away quickly like the RS stuff when applying heat.. Maybe when you've decanted it off, it's already gone a bit more tacky by the time you use it? The only issue with the tacky stuff is that it's not as easy to see when components are centred until it melts a bit with heat!
