How to make Better than Reese's Peanut Butter Cups from Scratch for Cheap
I will show you How to make Better than Reese's Peanut Butter Cups from Scratch for Cheap. Peanut Butter Cups taste much better homemade and usually are much cheaper to make then it costs to buy them at the store. They are one of my favorite treats, and they are super easy to make! If I can make them, then you can make them. If you have any questions or comments put them down below and I will get back to you as soon as I can!

Ingredients:
1/2 cup of peanut butter
1 tablespoon of Butter (softened)
1/3 cup of powdered sugar (plus a little bit extra)
1/4 tsp of salt
1/2 bag of chocolate chips (milk chocolate or semi sweet)
2 - 4 oz candy bars (whatever kind you want)
Combine the peanut butter, butter, salt and powdered sugar, until it resembles play dough consistency, if it is too sticky add a bit more powdered sugar. Melt the chocolate in the microwave, or in a bowl over a pot of boiling water. If using the microwave method, melt it on high with bursts of 30 seconds, then stir, 30 seconds stir, until almost completely melted, then switch to 10 seconds. Next, using paper muffin cups in a muffin pan, at a couple of tsps of melted chocolate on the bottom, then take your peanut butter mixture and take about a teaspoon or so and flatten it out like a medallion and place it on top of the chocolate, then just add another layer of chocolate to the top. After that place it in the fridge for about 30 minutes to set up. There you go awesome peanut butter cups that are better then Reese's. After eating these peanut butter cups, you may not want to ever go back to Reese's! haha :)

Making these for my grown kids for Easter. Thanks for the recipe reminder, Matt! I buy dark morsels made by ENJOY (no junk in them) and they are delicious. Instead of butter sometimes I put coconut oil but we like either/or. I also use natural peanut butter and don't add sugar because my family likes the salty peanut butter with the sweet chocolate. 😊🍫🥜🐇

Im 14. Me, my mom, and 4 year old brother LOVE reeses. He ate all his mini reeses today, so i looked up if i could make some. We had everything we needed except powdered sugar, chocolate chips, and a chocolate bar. My mother got them for me so i could try to make us some, even though she didnt understand how using the muffin wrappers wouldnt make them into muffins LOL. They are cooling right now. I tried the peanut butter and chocolate as i put the dishes into the sink and it was delicious. Im so excited to try them! Ill also see if my 12 year old brother, who isnt really a reeses fan, will like them! Ill update when theyre done cooling, and ill update on what the 4 year old thinks when he wakes up tomorrow. Thank you so much :D

Definitely a good alternative to using the microwave. :) Although traditionally you don't need that strainer that I was using, because you would use a larger metal bowl or ceramic one like that one, haha, I just didn't have one on me at the time. Old video, but still a good one, hahaha. In fact, that was one of my very first videos on my channel!

Matt, They came out SO AWESOME. I used half a bag of semisweet chips, and a dark chocolate candy bar, and I DID split the peanut butter and put half in the chocolate. My kids wanted to eat all 12 giant cups in one sitting! I had to lay down the law or I wouldn't even had gotten a taste! Definitely a new staple around here. BTW, I was a chef once upon a time so I know good food when I taste it! Five stars and definitely superior to Reeses :D

Your peanut butter cup recipe is by far my favorite. When I made them, I used that peanut butter mixture, but I also melted half of a cup of white chocolate and half a cup of peanut butter together and they both taste exactly the same. Also, when I use the peanut butter mixture, I usually leave out the butter. Just saying.
@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 9 лет назад
Dana Williamson Thank you Dana, I definitely like it! I make it so often!! I sometimes leave out the butter in the peanut butter if I happen to be out of it, but if I have it I usually include it.
@danawilliamson851
@danawilliamson851 9 лет назад
That's also really good thinking putting an extra 1/4 cup of peanut butter into the chocolate while melting it. I put 1-2 small spoonfuls of peanut butter on the chocolate before melting it in the microwave.
@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 9 лет назад
Dana Williamson I have also made them without adding the extra peanut butter to the chocolate, but I prefer it with it in there. Honestly its really hard to mess up these peanut butter cups! haha
@danawilliamson851
@danawilliamson851 9 лет назад
It's also easier, in my opinion, to make sure that the chocolate is not burning when I put the extra peanut butter in.

I like how in your version the peanut butter center can be shaped into flat discs and placed on top of the bottom chocolate layer. In most other recipes the middle peanut butter layer is a more liquid consistency and has to be poured or spooned on top of the bottom chocolate layer.
@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 3 года назад
Thanks, Shawn!! Yeah, sometimes it can be sure sticky and hard to work with the peanut butter with other recipes. The key is adding more powdered sugar, so it is more of a play dough consistency. I probably make this treat the most out of all my treats. haha

I miss Reese cups from the 60's. They used to taste so good back then. This was before M&M's came out with the slogan "melts in your mouth, not in your hand", and the idea spread to all chcolate candies from there. I never had a problem with Reese cups being melty.

hahaha yeah I have two different video versions, the link is to this one. To be honest it is so easy to make, I rarely even to measurements any more. I just start with some peanut butter and butter in a bowl, add a pinch of salt, not always, and then mix it together, then start adding powdered sugar until I get that play dough consistency. Then I just melt the chocolate. Of course I have made this so many times, it is like second nature, hahaha. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fU8TPG2z01c.html

The recipe I have is only slightly different and I am sure your recipe turns out as awesome as mine...the only difference I do with mine pretty much is use a cookie sheet or the sort and spread the chocolate on the sheet or I put a wax paper down on the cookie sheet and put the chocolate on that {this will make it so much easier to remove the whole thing later from the cookie sheet, hence making it easier to cut}...I freeze it for about 15ish so minutes...then spread the peanut butter mixture over the frozen chocolate...freeze it again for a bit and then pour the rest of the chocolate over the peanut butter mixture...place back in the fridge, when done in the fridge... I slice up the whole thing about half way down...so they are easy to cut when anyone would like one...I too love this recipe, it's so easy to make and so does my two adult sons...however they just like to eat 'em...not make 'em. Oh well, you can't win 'em all. Thank you for sharing your recipe. :)

Tasted awesome. Used chunky peanut butter. Might try to tweak the recipe as the chocolate seemed to melt on the fingers too easily.
@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 7 лет назад
Awesome!!! Glad you tried it out. I store mine in the fridge and eat them right after taking them out, so that helps. Otherwise you would need to temper the chocolate. Another option which I do quite frequently, especially if I am taking them to a party where they will be on display, is I use Chocolate Candy Melts. Those don't have any cocoa butter in them, so they set up at room temperature, and don't melt as easy. And they still taste amazing, not quite as good as with real chocolate.
@j.pierce8786
@j.pierce8786 6 лет назад
About the chocolate melting on your fingers, there are a least two possible reasons. The first is that the peanut that Matt mixed into the chocolate adds fat, and probably lowers the melting temperature of the chocolate. Most chocolatiers do not recommend adding any extra fat to dipping or 'enrobing' chocolate. I do not add the peanut butter to my chocolate when making these. The second possible reason is that the chocolate melting technique shown will usually result in chocolate that is not properly tempered. This can result in chocolate that has an unpredictable melt temperature, and fat streaks, and gray or white spots. Tempering chocolate does not require any special tools except for a accurate thermometer and some extra care and time. It is within the ability of almost any home cook, but takes a little practice.

Why do you not use Graham cracker crumbs?
@inthekitchenwithmatt

Because original Reese's peanut butter cups don't have graham cracker crumbs. :) You can certainly use graham cracker crumbs if you want. Growing up as a kid, my mom made something similar, with graham cracker crumbs. But these taste even better then the real Reese's. give them a try using the ingredients I used and see how you like them. :)

What's the measurement for the bar of chocolate?... 8 oz, ...12? Also you said to mix 1/2c pb with powdered sugar, then you said put the other 1/4 c in the choc. Can I assume that you only used 1/4 of pb in the filling? I checked Instructables, the site was down.

Hello! Yes so in this video I used 1/4 cup of peanut butter with the powder sugar and added the other 1/4cup of peanut butter to the chocolate. each candy bar was 4.4 ounces. I don't really make it like that any more. I normally make it like this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fU8TPG2z01c.html

@Apeman Commeth Hi there, Actual Reese's are commercially made, it is hard to make something with the exact texture. These are super easy to make, just give them a try :) Everyone I have made them for or who has tasted them likes them better than the original. The filling isn't as salty but the texture is close to the originals.

About 170 grams. But keep in mind the amount of chocolate doesn't have to be exact, just enough to put a layer of chocolate on the bottom of the papercup, then the peanut butter mixture, and then another layer of chocolate on the top.

Ilene Osran I just use the cheap kroger brand creamy peanut butter. You can use any peanut butter you like, if you want to add some character try using chunky, or if you want to go "healthy" lol try almond butter. Or if you want to do the organic, you can use organic. :) It's totally up to you, and whatever of those options you pick, it is still going to taste super yummy! :)

Ray did you like the homemade ones better then the originals? How did you calculate the costs? @@ArrowoodsHobbyShop-Ebay lol Chris, I know what he meant. I used to buy Reeses Peanut Butter cups, my supermarket has 2 king sized peanut butter cups in one pack for $1. The whole point of the costs breakdown, is that they are way cheaper and taste way better to make at home. in the video they were on sale when I got them, but normally cost .35 to .50 cents per cup, at least at my supermarket. But yeah, I stopped putting costs in my videos, because they always vary, both the actual product (in this case the store bought peanut butter cups, and the ingredients for the homemade ones.) and heck this video is 5 years old. lol ok

Shouldn't the chocolate be tempered before using it, otherwise chocolate gets melted easily and might have a bloom also.
@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 3 года назад
No it doesn't have to be tempered, if you are going to store them in the fridge. Or if the room temperature of your home is fairly cool. But yes if the chocolate isn't tempered these will get soft at room temperature after 30 minutes to an hour. But if you use chocolate candy melts, then there is no issues, since there is no cocoa butter in the candy melts.
