This is one of my favorite Chinese dessert to enjoy! Love your detail tutorial. :) How wonderful you add peanuts in the fillings! I usually only use black sesame seeds. Can't wait to try your version next time. :) Thanks for sharing, Yi! Have a wonderful weekend ahead.

Thanks Amy. Yeah I guess adding peanuts is sort of regional version but it's pretty tasty. Have a great weekend as well!

Never had this but now I really want to. It does look delicious. And I was amazed to see the butter-I had no idea it was used in Chinese cooking!

Frank Fariello hi Frank, thanks for checking out the recipe. Traditionally, the fat of choice is lard but since it's not something I stock often I use butter instead and it still tastes awesome 👌

Thanks for the informative video! I was wondering if there's any way to serve Tang Yuan without the soup/water? I'm doing a presentation on the Lantern Festival for class and would like to bring Tang Yuan but transporting a pot of liquid would be quite tricky.

Hi Iryana, thanks for checking out the video. I actually have never tried to grind glutinous rice into flour as it requires a special tool to turn the glutinous rice into super fine powder. Perhaps you can find the glutinous rice (stick rice) flour online?

This looks delicious - I can taste it already! Just curious here, but what would be the traditional fat used here for the filling given that the Chinese usually don't use butter?
@YiReservation
@YiReservation 7 лет назад
Hi, thanks for the question. The traditional fat of choice is lard and my grandfather who gave me this recipe would only use lard but nothing else. I use butter because I don't normally stock up lard. For the ultimate authenticity, you can substitute the butter with lard (I also added a note in the description in case other readers are wondering about the same thing.)

christine b coconut oil works well too and has a really nice texture, and isn't as fatty as butter 😉

I’m surprised you didn’t put it in the traditional ginger, brown sugar soup to make it even more tastier.

I made this one myself because I was craving Tang Yuan and I didn't like the filling. It was probably because the recipe called for butter and I don't really like the strong butter taste it had. I figured it was probably originally made with lard, but I can't find lard in the stores here either. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Strange cause I thought Islanders use lard. Will have to try with a different fat. Thankfully found a store here that actually carrots carries a few Chinese goods and Tang Yuan is one of them!!! 😁 Still plan on making it again myself. So much cheaper that way!

hi Saph, glad to hear that you like tangyuan as well. Yeah the taste is a little different why lard is used. If butter is not your thing definitely try using lard next time. Thanks

If you are referring to the ready-made frozen glutinous rice balls, i don't see why not. But i still prefer the whole made ones though :)
