I have made those pinecone style feeders once, not a great success, at least not for the birds. As I was hanging them, a squirrel was watching me. I came in, cleaned up my mess then looked out at my pinecones, hoping to see birds at them. They were gone! That squirrel had chewed them off the twine and hauled off with all three of them! So I bought one of those little square suet cages. And the squirrels knocked it down, opened it and took off with the whole suet cake. I now wire the suet cages shut and also wire them to the stand so they can't take off with them. They do still hang from them and try to eat what they can through the cage. I have to feed squirrels something separately so that the birds can get their share. They all get along pretty well.

So sorry to hear that the squirrels took your pinecones after all that work. Also your suet cake...quite clever of them 🙈 There are feeding boxes for squirrels. I have never used them as I don't get squirrels in my garden.

I had trouble with squirrels too. So I moved my feeding station far enough away from trees and structures so the squirrels couldn’t jump onto it. I greased the pole below the baffle so they couldn’t climb up. Problem solved! Squirrels can jump about 6 feet horizontally.

Why tie the peanuts together? The birds would have to break them open while they are still attached to the string or would have to break the string to take the peanut away and eat it elsewhere. I put peanuts out for free access and the birds come and fly off with them one at a time to nearby branches.

very nice video, was wondering if you could use chia wet seeds to set the seeds Lard would be toxic for their digest?

Never heard of using them before but you could trade the lard for peanut butter. I make walnut butter, you can do it with any kind of nut, just add them to a food processor and let them blend for several minutes. You’ll notice the nut mixture change in consistency, you can continue to blend until you get a consistency you’re happy with. I personally like it chunky and I always put nuts to the side to chop up and add to it butter. I spread it around the base of the tree and also about head high, Robin’s and Blue birds eat close to the base of the tree, woodpeckers, nut hatches, brown creepers and more will eat it from head level.

I never heard of lard being bad for them? But I think it is important to make the mix on the dryer side so it doesn't get on their feet or wings. I usually use a mix of lard and peanut butter and then I use lots of shelled seeds (so they dont have to spit them out to take shell off), dried fruit, nuts, meal worms, and oats.

would beef dripping be better than lard?
@theladygardener
@theladygardener Год назад
Beef dripping is probably seasoned, so it would be too spicy and salt for the birds

Where do you purchase supplies
@theladygardener

I bought the lard at a supermarket and the bird seeds, peanuts, mealworms at a garden center / pet supply store

I read that peanut butter can stop up the anus. I read this in a book by a man who did bird rehabilitation. He found a bird on the ground stopped up. He held it over the flame of a candle until the peanut butter melted and ran out. He did not mention if lard is any better. I would never use coconut oil. It made ME so sick I threw up, after using it daily.

I read that SUET is what you should use and it is HARD and doesn't melt on the birds and ruin their natural protection against the cold. This was advice given out on Facebook during a week of snowy weather. People should double check.

I dont know. I am just repeating what I read in a bird book. I m no expert, I just feed birds. I started slappung a Tblsp of vegetable Crisco on a tree and sticking seeds into it by hands, mostly for woodpeckers.

@@gretafields4706 I don't know either. When I was in that bird group, we were always getting alerts that the birds had disease, and don't do this o that, it would make them sick, it would spread the disease. Like your peanut butter story. I used to put out peanut butter for them, but it looked to me like rodent was eating it.

Peanut butter for humans would be too salt for them so if you use peanut butter I would use the one special for birds. I have read on many websites (like NHM, gardeners world, etc) that it is safe to use lard or suet
