How to make coffee table - Venetian Plaster finish

This time I created a table top to "restyle" our exterior coffee table.
The table itself is made out of pallets on top of 6 roller wheels.
First I measured the top of the pallet and added 20mm on each side for the extra timber to create a thick border.
The video has explanations of each step and by the end you will see what products I have used.
Basically it took around 5-10' per each primer coat, 30-40' per each base coat and around 60' for each top coats (including corners)
One think that most people don't understand, is how much time the corners require.
In this table alone there are 8 corners in total and 3.5 lineal meters of a tinny edge (60mm) which takes 10 times more than the actual table surface.
Keeping the trowels and your tools clean and with sharp edges its a must to achieve a good finish.
In this case, I had some issues with the first coat of top coat, I rushed in the application and the plaster bubbled it and ended up cracking, only two tinny spots. Also, I was using a brand new trowel for the top coat and she didn't have a lot of experience.. (her fault, not mine).
The table needed a couple of touch ups afterwards and they are almost invisible now.
If I was going to do it again, probably I would tilt the table onto its side and work as if it was a wall, for better access.
This is a great way to practice your skills doing external corners, try new techniques and patterns, play with different tints and effects and don't be too worry about the outcome.
This table top took 3 days from start to finish.
Day 1: build and 2 coats of primer and one coat of base coat
Day 2: second coat of base coat and one coat of top coat (white)
Day 3: 2 coats of top coat (tinted), and wax.
I finish the third day just on time to watch the sunset reflected of the table :)
If you liked it, please leave a comment in the video, like and subscribe!!
Thanks!!

I like to paint with laquer like holland lac and something automotive on doors and furniture. Id like to try this but I have no idea where to start. Is the trowel just to spread it out evenly and flush or to create dimension by going different directions? Id love to do my dining room walls in white pearl effect. What all would I need to order and do you have a basic step by step directions for beginners?

Hi there! Thanks for your comment. The trowel is the tool to use for this product and finish. You will need to keep it very clean and with sharp edges so you don't get scratches while applying the stucco. (work with very little product to start with) The movement you use on application, will show on the last coat, after the burnishing step. Try to keep the same pattern over the whole area/wall Look online where is the best place to get Venetian Plaster next to you, I would get a 4kg to start practicing. You can always play with a piece of wood or plasterboard first. You'll need: primer with grit Venetian plaster Bee's wax or Carnauba wax Thanks

BEES WAX - Does the bees wax need to be put on regularly. I never seen this technique before. Looks beautiful. What is the maintenance for this?

Hi there, thanks for your comment. I have walls with Venetian plaster at home which were done 5 years ago and I never added more wax since I made them. However, maybe every 2-3 years in case you see it fading. Sun exposure will accelerate the process for sure.

would it not be recommended to place a clear coat epoxy over this to really protect it?
@venetianplaster
@venetianplaster 9 месяцев назад
Yes, but so far all the epoxy sealers that I tried “burn” the product and makes them “dull” , happy for you to share your experience 👍

For wax, do you first add it with sponge, then water and stainless steel trowel and then wipe of with a cloth?
@venetianplaster
@venetianplaster 11 месяцев назад
Apply wax with sponge, troweled in and wipe off the excess, buffer or polished once is fully dry for better reflection. No water. Thanks for your comment.

how long does it take to fully cure once finished?
@venetianplaster
@venetianplaster Год назад
Hi there, depending on weather conditions. For a normal 50-60% humidity at 20-30 degrees it takes a couple of days. However, once the wax is applied its ready to me touched 😉👍

I want to do something similar. How durable is it?
@venetianplaster
@venetianplaster 9 месяцев назад
Hi there, that depends on what kind of use it's going to get. In my case is just the occasional coffee and some food (maybe used twice a month) and it is lasting pretty good. It is also seating outside under a terrace with all the weather and moisture levels changing.

Could this be done on kitchen counters? If so, would you seal it with polyurethane or beeswax? I'm wanting to try this but I'm afraid frequent cleaning would cause issues if I used beeswax.
@venetianplaster
@venetianplaster 6 месяцев назад
Hi Hailey, thanks for your comment. No, I would not use this finish for a kitchen. The abrassives cleaning products would damage the wax and then the actual product. For kitchens benches you should use a water-base polyurethane sealer. However, marmorino stucco plaster (likes this table) “burns” and fades with the polyurethane sealer. So you are better off trying Microcement which can handle everything, its even design for floors. Hope it helps! Thanks for your support 👍

How does it not scratch!!!!?
@venetianplaster
@venetianplaster Год назад
When not look after it will scratch like any other table. However, once fully cured its very tough.

Is this waterproof if so.. what did you coat it with?
@venetianplaster
@venetianplaster Год назад
@@jaythebarbarian5220 No, it is not waterproof. However, it is water resistance with the coat of Bee’s Wax as a sealer. The table is placed undercover 👍
