Hi, friends! Have you ever had Shabu Shabu? What's your favorite Asian food? I'm Japanese, so I LOVE Sushi, Sukiyaki, Shabu Shabu, and.... well... EVERYTHING! ;) Hope you enjoy! - Lisa
Yes, I LOVE shabu shabu. So I liked this video, but I have to admit I was a little disappointed the kombu was the only 'broth' part in there. I wanted to learn how to make the bouillons for shabu shabu! That's really what makes it in my opinion. I've seen other videos, but they just buy a pack of broth which I can't buy/find here in The Netherlands. Do you know a recipe? And how does it work? I've been taught never ever to boil kombu, only let it sit in the water and always remove it before boiling...?
Thank you so much for not always having perfect everything like a lot of channels try to get. You do a really good job of cooking with what you have on hand or can get that isn't wasteful of your time or money but still comes out delicious. It is so encouraging.
awwww Patrick, this is the best comment, ever. Thank you so much!!!! I was sad I couldn't upload last week in Peru so I'm glad to be back. Thanks for your kind words! - Lisa
I love watching and learning from you. I absolutely love mushrooms and Napa cabbage. Thank you for sharing this festive meal. Your trip to the grocery store is wonderful.
Found your video after a simple Google search. I just realized I haven't had the chance to go out to eat Shabu Shabu since the pandemic started, I miss it. I am soooo going to try to recreate this at home. I instantly subscribed and look forward to all your IPot lessons!
I recently started eating keto and I can no longer have noodles or rice, but this could easily be keto friendly!! I miss Asian food and this could be a great way to get those flavors back into our dining. Love your contagious laughter, bright smile & love of food!
Omg. I am so happy I found your channel. My instant pot was collecting dust before I found you and now I am obsessed. I am an adventurous eater and shabu shabu via IP is my next culinary endeavor. I usually dont have the attention span to watch videos this long but you are adorable.
Hi Lisa, my name is Paul Diamond and I just found your channel searching for some Instant pot recipes and love your content. I find it super funny that I find your until now that I'm deployed 7437 miles away from Sandy. I own a Brazilian Market Cafe in Orem, Utah with my wife an son called Brazilian Goodies. We are a big Foodie family and do foods at home from all over the world. If you're ever down in the Orem area swing in an give us a try. Keep that awesome videos coming and best of luck in your video ventures.
The Mark Weins face made me LOL, OOOOWWWWWOOoooowwww!!!! He is the BEST!!! My son and I both served our missions in Brazil and loved Mark's Brazil series. My parents and older brothers and sisters lived in Misawa (?), Japan for 4 years while my dad was stationed there with the Air Force. We would love to chat with you sometime about some business ideas if you're interested. I sent you a message in your instagram as well.
Hi, Paul! Thanks so much for watching my video! I got your comment on instagram and I'd love to keep chatting. You can email me at lisa@triedtestedandtrue.com and we'll definitely stop by if we're ever in Orem :)
I’m impressed on the selection at the Asian market ! I’m in Los Angeles and even in our little Tokyo downtown the selection is a bit less than there. ❤ Thank you for all the helpful recipes! Love them !
I really love this video! It is an introduction to a new (to me) cultural way of eating that I really want to try! I've had my Instant Pot for about 2 years and I have been recently learning a lot about cooking from an on-line cooking school. I'm really trying to expand my range of cooking. Much of Japanese cooking is intimidating to those of us Americans of European heritage, and I love to learn about different ways to do things from other cultures. I especially appreciate your shopping trip -- so much better than just making a list of ingredients. Then you explained how to prepare the ingredients. (However, I did not see how you used the Shitake Mushrooms!) My big issue is that my family dislikes mushrooms and are generally not willing to try new things. We're not big fans of Tofu, but I'm willing to try it all and push the family to try this out as a fun evening. Thank you for this video, and I'd love to see more like this one!
You can always tweak it a little if they try it and don't like it this way. 😁 Sub the mushrooms for extra veggies and switch the tofu out for a different protein. I love making food from other cultures but my foster kids have some stuff they don't like too. For example when I make curry with whole chickpeas 😅 they hate chickpeas. So I make the sauce, add the meat, serve them up and then I add the chickpeas for my husband and I because we like them. I don't usually make crazy changes for one person but if multiple people agree on it then why not 😁 totally ok to do that. I'm curious to know if you guys tried it and how your family liked it
Had my first Shabu Shabu July 2019. So delicious! Now I know what to buy and how to make it. Lisa, I thoroughly enjoy your enthusiasm and smile. I can follow your instructions easily. Purchased the instant pot basket you recommended in Tips. Perfect. Thank you for all your tips and recipes. You are a delight. Blessings! Carol
Thank you for taking us to Asian store. I’ve seen those mushrooms but had no idea what each were.... also much appreciate showing the certain products and names of each.
Lisa!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I just discovered your channel and love your videos. I'm married to a Japanese guy and I can never impress him with my cooking - UNTIL NOW!! I'm going to surprise him with Shabu Shabu this week. Thank you!!! And thank you for adding the shopping part, that is a tremendous help!!!
This was really interesting! I am trying a Chinese style hot pot soon for my first attempt. But I will be trying this Japanese style one next time. Thanks for the great ideas and instructions! It was super helpful to have everything laid out from the grocery trip to eating.
We love to do shabu shabu on sundays in fall and winter- our favorite thing to cook in it aside from meat is squash, especially if we did a spicy base. (We usually use the Chinese bases you had pointed out) We usually use a hot plate, never have tried with my instant pot. Maybe we will do that next and try to make a more Japanese version!
Thank you so much for this! I've always wanted to try this and never have and by taking us to the store and talking about different brands that you prefer was very helpful! I just grinned from ear-to-ear and did a little squeal myself when you were so happy after tasting that first bite It was pure joy, and it was infectious. That was what made me subscribe to your Channel. Unfortunately I've not had much in the way of Japanese food I do really like Thai and Vietnamese. I think my favorite Thai food is laht nah mee grob. I really love the veggies in the crunchy noodles to soak in the soup. I am stupid over cilantro and as you were Gathering your ingredients are kept thinking where is the cilantro? Do you ever flavored the broth with things like that cilantro garlic any of that sort of thing or would that end up pushing it more toward of Vietnamese cuisine? Obviously I know I can make it however I want but I probably would try it just like you did first.
You are so sweet! thank you SO much!!! I don't add a whole lot to the broth, but if you want a korean or chinese style hot pot, they add tons of garlic and flavorings, etc. to their broth! I am a purist when it comes to shabu shabu but you could definitely add cilantro or whatever else you like :) Thanks for subbing!!! - Lisa
I love you, you make me smile. I personally do not eat any kind of mushrooms, tofu, or kelp. My daughter does though, so I forwarded the link to her. Maybe you’ll get another subscriber.
I just found your channel, bought an Insta pot and haven’t used it yet (originally bought it for rice) but was wondering what you thought about cooking instant ramen in an insta pot? So far I’m loving the videos on insta pots very much! Besides rice, I’m still seeing what I can cook in one but I just had the thought about ramen in it.. I’ve seen some people do it from scratch but I just have some spicy seafood ramen pack and I really enjoy the season packet that comes with it (not necessarily the vegetables packet tho). I’m also looking for one of those noodle pots that I’ve seen so many cook their ramen in but also eat out of! Anyways, I was just wondering your thoughts about ramen in an insta pot (instant ramen packet anyways).
We tried the Shabu Shabu tonight and it was a hit!! First timers, my partner really enjoyed it and he mixed the sauces 🤗 we both enjoyed the sesame sauce more but the ponzu was good too. Thank you for the great idea! Have you made a pumpkin pie in the instant pot? Would love to hear your experience.
Tried, Tested, and True Instant Pot Cooking we made pumpkin pie but only cooked the pumpkin initial softening in the IP, then we baked the pie in a conventional oven. Came out delicious. Hope all is well.
That looks beautiful :) and yummy! My Maiden Name is Childs- I don't see it often , I'm guessing you married into the name but I have cousins who look like you through my uncle Matrid - It makes me smile to see you like family :)
WOW❗What an incredible video. There are 2 Asian markets in my city & neither have a butcher. They barely have produce & you either luck out & its fresh or its limp. The napa cabbage is $3.99 a lb & is around $12 for your size. I won't even mention the prices of the mushrooms. I can find everything except the meat. Any recommendations? And yes I want meat in my shabu shabu.
Thank you so much!! I'm shocked your Asian market wouldn't have this kind of meat! The nappa cabbage actually can usually be found at a regular grocery store. I can almost always find it at Kroger. Not Walmart, but others. As for the meat, I'd go to your favorite butcher and ask for this kind of meat (as suggested below), or you can purchase your own machine to cut your own meat! amzn.to/2RPNHbF This is usually less expensive in the long run, just takes a bit more work :)
I have a question. I've been using my instant pot for some time now and have tried lots of recipes. I just heard someone say that you have to set the Instant Pot to either high pressure or low pressure. I had never heard that before. When do you use High Pressure and when do you use Low Pressure? I am more confused than ever now. I didn't know you had to choose. Please clarify this for me. Thank You!
Some recipes do better at low pressure (very soft and delicate foods), but I've only use it a handful of times a year (though it is nice to have!!). If you have a lux, there is no low pressure setting so high is the default. High is the default for any other Instant Pot as well.
Although obviously it can be done in the Instant Pot, it's not ideal because it's too tall. Shabu Shabu and Chinese Hot Pot meals are usually cooked at the table around families, friends and guests where you are seated. It's way too tall to put your food it. Plus all of the broth will end up dripping around the IP (between the liner and the base unit). Regular Hot Pots and Shabu Shabu pots are very shallow where you can actually see your foods.
Aloha from Hawaii! Thank you for this video and thank you for pronouncing “ponzu” and “kombu” correctly. I cringe every time I hear an Asian cook pronounce them incorrectly. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!
