I've been wanting to start canning and think this recipe is a great way to begin to get my feet wet. I have lots of strawberries in the freezer and what better way to use them up! Do you know if this method can be used with elderberries?

Strawberries are a low pectin fruit, so be sure to add some high pectin fruits to your jam. I wasn't sure about the pectin content in elderberries, but since I've been unable to find an elderberry jam recipe without added, store bought pectin, I'm assuming they are naturally low in pectin, too.

Can i ues black grapes (for a no pectin jam)? And if no how many Lebanese apples for 16 cups of black grapes ? Please i need your guidance and experience !!!!!

Jam requires pectin from some source or it will be a thin syrup, not jam. You could add store bought pectin or add a little high pectin fruit, like sour apples.

@@Proverbs31Homestead i see, thanks Edit: I’m glad to say this too you i’ve completed the jam making process, and it has thickened by itself with 4:1 grapes to Sugar ratio, with no added pectin. I’m going to reiterate my appreciation to you, you have not just inspired me to make the jam, but guided me to better jamming processes in the future Thanks a lot 👍

I don't. I just pro-war thr jelly jars in hot tap water. After addingvthr jam, I cool a bit on the counter before freezing.

I know this video is from three years ago but I have a couple of questions. Is it ok to add extra liquid like some lemon juice? Also if I don't want clumps of fruit can I puree it and do I puree it after?

A small amount of lemon juice is a fine addition....and yes, you can puree it. Puree before cooking down.

@@tammyj.9152 this is a no measure recipe. Just put the fruit in and add sugar to taste :)

What about agar agar and adding jelly? I tried adding them both, also mixed, to fruits that were too liquid and it worked well for me

I know this is an older video and I hope you'll see this question. How long will this last in the freezer or in the fridge once open?

I'd say a year, maybe more, in the freezer. How long it lasts in the fridge depends on how much sugar you use. More sugar = longer lasting in the fridge. Ours usually gets eaten in a month or two. I've never had even low sugar jam go moldly or bad.

@@Proverbs31Homestead HYey thank you for the reply! I ended up using 4 parts fruit 1 part sugar and just putting it in small containers so that they wont be in the fridge long.

if you use JELLO POWDER ,it will guarantee your no sugar -low sugar- is going to be a success for freezer jam! and if you need to do the same thing BUT you want to can it for storage - AGAR AGAR ! agar -agar will gel and set without cold storage and it has no flavor too it. i do like the JELLO POWDER ,idea, because sometimes you could find a jello that is no sugar or low sugar with different flavors and that could add to your jam! the way you did it was too easy! usually Im screaming "ow" because the jam is bubbling and you have to keep stirring the jam as it has a sizzling sound! and sometimes you could just use a nice plastic Tupperware . i find some good plastic bowls at dollar tree and use those! especially if im giving these away. i never see my old glass jars ever again! they never come back to me . have you tried your hand at "bacon jam "? i did and it was so delicious! i must have gained at least 3 pounds from eating it all the time!

Thanks for the tips! I prefer not to use jello because I don't personally feel the ingredients are healthy. I haven't yet tried bacon jam. It looks delish, though!
