How to Make Homemade Whole Wheat Tortillas

INGREDIENTS
4 cups whole wheat flour
2 tsp salt
3 tsp baking powder
4 Tbs coconut oil
Almost 2 cups water
DIRECTIONS
Mix dry ingredients together. Add coconut oil and blend again. Adding a little water at a time, starting hand mixing the dough, until everything it blended nicely and the dough is in the shape of a ball. Cover with a damp paper towel and let rest for 10 min. Divide dough into 12 balls and let rest another 10 min. Roll out balls into tortillas or use a tortilla press. Place tortillas onto a hot pan, and cook for 40 sec on 1st side, 30 on other side.

Pronunciation: It's tor-TEE-ya. In Spanish the double l (LL) is provinces like an English Y.

I just made these the second time. Wow! Delicious. I made them to wrap some homemade baked falafels (garbanzo beans, onion, garlic, parsley, cumin, turmeric, chili powder, dash cayenne, salt, lemon juice, ww flour, water + tahini dressing). Usually the whole wheat tortillas is just a way to eat the falafel. But when taking a bite and only getting the whole wheat tortilla. Yum. It was very good all by itself.

I have a tortilla press. What are you wrapping the plates with? I have had such problems with the press because the dough sticks. I'd like to see what it is you are using as those tortillas came out of the press SO nicely! Thanks.

Jill 4 Today Glad Press 'n Seal. It keeps the dough from sticking to the plates.

I have been using the store bought to make quesadillas which I fill and bake in the oven for 10 minutes. When these are cooked in the frying pan, are they the consistency of the uncooked store-bought tortillas at that time or are they ready to eat?

They're ready to eat. They will be thicker than the store bought ones, as I wasn't able to spread them out thin enough manually without getting holes in them.

+Citlaly Perez Give it a try and see what you think! As long as it's some sort of oil, you should be fine. I just personally tend to cook with coconut oil. Let me know how it comes out.
