You will be the talk of the party and your LED cornhole boards will be much appreciated by all the party goers!
This is my 3rd set of LED resin embedded cornhole boards. I made this video to help you better understand all of the steps I took to make these boards.
Estimated cost for all the material needed to complete this project is
approximately $350.00 Price will vary depending on the type and quality of materials you choose to buy.
This build went so much smoother than the 2 previous builds because of all I learned from the first two builds. Learning from my mistakes!
All lumber bought at Home Depot.
THE PLYWOOD I BOUGHT ALREADY HAS THE HOLE CUT IN THE BOARD. If you use plywood without holes already in them.... you will have to modify the the steps in this build.
2’ x 4’ red oak plywood -- Ordered online from Home Depot. The holes were already cut out in the boards.

I didn't see that you placed any poly over the resin and you intentionally left the resin lower than the top of the board how did you level the top of the board to have a smooth sliding surface?
@ricohernandez2394
@ricohernandez2394 2 года назад
Hi Michael, Thanks for the comments and question! I took great care to level the board in all directions... i used small shims to prop up the board in certain locations until it was level all the way around. I just poured slowly as not to over pour until the resin reached the surface. If there would have been any low areas i would have filled those area later with clear resin. Yes... purposely masked off the resin when i applied the resin, not really necessary ...but i did it anyway.

Now you should add in an optical sensor that triggers some sort of confirmation of the bag passing through the hole. Perhaps a short audio music clip or voice announcement. Also wondering why you chose pocket holes on the leg brace and not just brad nails since you applied glue?

Quick question, first off,amazingly done video! I promise I am NOT trying to sound like a keyboard knowitall! I am simply asking...are there any places where the bags snag or get caught on the resin channels? Since you don't over-fill the channels, did that create any problem when a bag hits the board? Thanks again, amazing job!

Hi otrindy Shawn! Thanks for watchin!! I have never had a bag catch on the channels.. the resin is pretty much as close to the top as possible. They slide just fine! I dont think you have to worry about that. Rico

I had a super hard time getting the epoxy perfectly level in several mockups I tried. It was either slightly overfilled or slightly underfilled when dried. I ended up having to overfill and then sand the whole top down.
@ricohernandez2394
@ricohernandez2394 2 месяца назад
Hi Leafinit up!! Thanks for watching my channel. much appreciated. You really have to make sure the channels are heavily sealed with your favorite sealer ..if not properly sealed.the resin sometimes will be absorbed into the plywood. But i have overfillled before and it a hassle to sand off the hardened resin. Sometimes it bertter tu under fill. Hope you have a great day!! Rico
@leafinitup1
@leafinitup1 2 месяца назад
@@ricohernandez2394 It was a workout to sand down the epoxy, but it came out great. I ended up routing a second channel under the epoxy for the LED strip, and then I sandwiched it with another thin piece of plywood, screwed to the first piece. That way, I could take it out and replace the LEDs if I ever have to. It was a fun project. Thanks for your video.

at 15:13, you showed a heat gun being applied. Is this a necessary step? I have not worked with resin before.
@ricohernandez2394
@ricohernandez2394 Год назад
Hi Jeff, Appreciate you watching the video and thanks for the question. The thing you you are asking about is not a heatgun..its a butane torch. The butane torch is used to pop the bubble that will surface to the top immediately after you pour the resin. The flame will pop all the surface bubble. You can use a heat gun, however sometime the force of the air is too high and will splash your resin. The flame from the torch is more gentle and will not disturb the resin in the channel. I hope this answers your questions...but yes...you will need some heat source to pop the surface bubbles. I hope you have a great day! Rico

Rico, thanks very much. I just made a set of boards based on your instructions/video. Overall, I can't thank you enough! I do, however, have a few minor recommendations for improvement for those considering making boards based on your video: Instead of folding the LED wires (which I found very difficult and I put a tiny nick in one and ruined the strand), I recommend drilling a 1/2 inch hole at each location where the fold would be. The LED strip can then go down in the hole, twist any way you need, and then back up in the correct/new direction. Also, I found that I had an extra 26 inches of LED strip at the end. So, I drilled a hole at the top center of the groove and put the extra 26 inches underneath so it will light up the bottom raised end of the board. I also added a built-in tape measure at one end of one of the boards. Lastly, I believe you used Alumilite Clear Slow which reacts (bubbles) to any moisture. Instead, use Alumilite Amazing Clear Cast (which is moisture tolerant).
@ricohernandez2394
@ricohernandez2394 Год назад
Hi Brian! Thanks so much for watching and thanks for the positive feed back! You recommendation were amazing... its always nice to hear of other ways to make the project better! I will try the Aluminlite Amazing Clear cast. What is the cure time on it? Cure time for the one i used was just 2 hours. Anyway...I am so happy that i was able to assist you in your build and thanks for the tips! Hope you and others get alot of enjoyment with your LED corn hole boards! Keep Building!! Rico

Rico, since I would like to learn from your mistakes and not my own... did you ever try placing the LED strips on edge all the way around, like you did around the hole? I was thinking of doing this as I am using 3/4" ply for my boards so I shouldn't need any secondary backing. Just wondering if you tried this yourself and if so did you have any adverse results or light effects (light display visual). Love your design, getting ready to build a set like yours, might use 2x4's for the legs as kids can be pretty tough on things!
@ricohernandez2394
@ricohernandez2394 Год назад
Hi Craig, Thsnks for watching my video and thanks for the question.. Great idea using the 3/4" plywood to eliminate the backing. I have built a set with the leds on the edges of the board... it just required building a damm along the edges to hold the resin. Here is a video of that build the shows the edge desing. I did not do a voice over on this video. The led are flat..but since you are using 3/4" you can stand them up. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vGcotptIZRY.html Good luck on your build. Rico

I have watched several cornhole videos and this by far the most detailed and easy to follow. Great Job! I do have a couple of questions, 1. Did you cut the lights to length? I ask this because an article I read on RBGIC lights said they could not be cut. And 2. how much pigment did you use?
@ricohernandez2394
@ricohernandez2394 2 года назад
Hi Jim! Thank you for your kind words and your questions! Much appreciated. Yes.... I did cut my LED strip to length. There are cut marks on the strip that are spaced every 3 LEDs. If Im not mistaken, most all LED light strips can be cut to length as long as you cut them on the marked cut lines. I tried to weight the amount of pigment that i used on my scale however the pigment is so light that it did not register on the scale... so i poured the amount i used onto a table spoon...and it looked like it was a full table spoon maybe a little more, but even if you use a little more..it shouldn't matter. Hope this helps.

Hi RotaryFD, Thanks for the like and question. Yes, each board will need its own LED strip. Each LED strip comes with a controller that controls the strip. If you cut the strip the remaining LEDs that are left will have nothing to be powered or controlled with.. So yes you will need two LED strips of any type that you choose to buy. Hi Cliff, Thanks so much for watching and thanks for the question! The question is perfect because I am currently working on a new Arduino control resin LED board...and when i was doing the resin test with the Aluminite resin on the back of the boards the results were so bad I had to find an other resin to test.. I did more tests with a NEW resin and it is bubbleless!! Unbelievable!! The new resin i am using is DEEP POUR 3:1 resin by MAS. It has a 3 hour work time and cures in 36 hours and the results are perfect compared to the other boards Ive made with the other resin. I will be posting the new video soon that explains the new resin and the new flat light ring that i am now using which eliminates a few of the routing steps. I purchased this resin on Amazon..i bought the gallon size which is probable enough for about 4 to 5 sets of boards. www.amazon.com/dp/B09YRWRWST?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1 I will never use the first resin again...but thats why its important to test your resin first! You cant go wrong with Deep Pour 3:1 by MAS Hope you have a blessed day. Rico

Hi balacapasa! Thanks for watching and thanks for asking the question! Since every resin has different cure times, the cure time is dependent on what resin you use. The resin are used in the video has a cure time of two hours. You can immediately start to remove the moles, after two hours. That is why I like this resin. However, you only have approximately 11 minutes of work time to do your pour, which can be stressful. Anyway, I hope this answers your question. I hope you have a great day and once again thanks, Rico.

Nice Video Rico. I have been making cornhole boards for a couple years now. I've made probably hundreds of them. But never with the leds this way. So, two boards, do I need to purchase two of the led strips and two of the battery pacs? Thank you for your time.
@ricohernandez2394
@ricohernandez2394 2 года назад
Hi Patrick, thank you for taking the time to watch my video and for the question. Yes you will need to buy two LED strips. I chose the sound activated set which are more expensive, but the cheaper set with out all the bells and whistles will work tii. But it’s totally up to the user. And yes, you will need 2 battery power packs. One battery pack per board. The battery packs I chose were tested to last for about 10 or 11 hours. You can buy cheaper battery pack of course that will last for less time. But then that again is also on the user. Good luck and I hope you have luck with your build. Rico

Last question, is there a reason you didn’t add the pigment to the epoxy in the first/bottom pour?
@ricohernandez2394
@ricohernandez2394 2 года назад
Hey Mathew!! thanks again for your question. The reason i didnt put pigment on the bottom layer was because #1 - it is not needed and #2 - i testing to see how many bubbles would show up after i put the sealant. If had used the pigment i would not be able to see the bubble formation. And as i mentioned in the video...if bubbles showed up in this layer.. they would be covered up by the top pigment layer. Hope this helps... happy building.... Rico

Hello and Thanks for video. I have made many board sets, and I plan to make this one for my use.I also have a question. I read that you used poly urethane to topcoat. Why did you not use polycrylic is it not compatible with resin?

Hi Michael… actually I did use polycrylic.. i listed it in the description.. I brushed it on… and it dries very quickly… that’s why I used it…. I should have put polycrylic in the video but put polyurethane…. Either will work fine. Sorry for the confusion… Rico

Hi Bruce, Thanks for the question! I purchased the boards from Home Depot with the holes already cut in them. If you start with boards that do not have the hole pre cut.... you will have to cut out a 6" hole with a hole saw (cleaner cut) or a jigsaw ( hard to get a clean circle). You can also use a router. Looking at making a set for myself. Did you have to buy 2 battery packs and 2 sets of light strips? i already purchased one set but then wants sure if i needed to buy another set. Also could you recommend some resin that is not so expensive as i will likely only be making one set of these....unless they turn out well and i get some interest in which case i will purchase more resin for future projects. Thank you for posting such a great video as i have been wanting to do a set of these for a while now and these are by far the coolest i have seen.
@ricohernandez2394
@ricohernandez2394 2 года назад
Hi Nickolas! Thank you a lot for taking the time to comment and ask questions. I appreciate you! Yes... you will need 2 powers pack and 2 sets of LED lights. The power packs are rechargeable and will last the entire night! I love them. As far as the resin is concerned ...I can not recommend any other resin, since I have not used any other types of resin. I selected Aluminite because it cures to a workable state in 2 hours, however the down side is that I only have 12 mins of work time to get it poured. I also bought the gallon sizes which make the price higher. You might want to see if they have a half gallon size, that will lower the cost. I am sure there are other resins that will work, i just haven't done any homework to know what those are. Every resin comes with its set of rules of how to use. ie: pot life, cure time, proper pour temperature, ratios by volume or weight. Resin is a tough medium to use.. I have made a number of cornhole boards with Aluminite and have done an number of other smaller projects with Aluminite and it works for me. If you do find something else that is cheaper and works. Please let me know! Hope you have a blessed day and thanks for watching!! Rico

@ricohernandez2394
@ricohernandez2394 2 года назад
Hi Kenneth, thank you for your comment and question. Yes I am sure you could use epoxy resin instead of casting resin. The only reason I use casting resin is because that’s what I had in my workshop. And also I liked using this one because it dries in about two hours and is ready to use. On the downside, you only have about 10 to 11 minutes of pot life. So you have to work pretty quick.Other resins take hours if not days to dry. Each resin comes with its own set of intricacies. I plans on using a resin in the future that will give me a longer pot life.

I have looked at various Govee LED’s trying to understand their capabilities, this will be my first-time using LED strips. I would like to be able to have LED’s start from the top center of the boards travel down along both sides and meet in the circle. My question, what direction do the LED’s light up? Can the direction of the LED’s be changed with the remote or Govee app? Thanks Al

In the video, if you pause the video(around the 11 minute mark) where he's test fitting the lights and showing how to bend them around the corners, if you look there appears to be arrows printed on the strip. My guess is that's the direction the lights light up
