Can I ask how you measure out the 5 grams of pigment powder? Do you use a digital food scale to weigh or a measuring spoon? If a measuring spoon which increment is 5 grams? Would it be one quarter (¹/4 teaspoon)? Do you ship to the USA on Etsy? I would love to try your paints. They look gorgeous. Also when you go to refill the pans for the second time after they had time to cure and dry do you have to make a whole new batch again for the second pour? Thanks for your help.
@crafterine
@crafterine 3 года назад
I get small mini sachets of mica powder, each of 5g. You can use those tiny and precise weighing scale for smaller quantities too. I haven't really done a teaspoon measurement since each pigment has a different density :). Thank you so much for checking out my shop. At the moment, I ship only within Europe, but worldwide shipping is in my to-do list :). While filling in for the next layer, sometimes I use the Pigment that I have leftover, for earth Pigments, I would mull them fresh again for topping the pans ☺️. I hope this helps

Thank you so much. If you don't get out all the big particles of pigment would they act as granulation?
@crafterine
@crafterine 10 месяцев назад
Unfortunately granulation doesn’t work this way. Mulling helps break down the pigment and it’s essential to get smooth paint out of it (or the artist who paints with it would find pigment breaking out on the canvas). However, granulation is a property of the pigment itself. Some granulate and some don’t (no matter how long you mull or not mull). I hope it makes sense 😅

In this video, I've used 5g pigment with 5 ml of binder. It worked for the bronze pigment, however with different pigments, the ratio might vary

Can you just use liquid gum Arabic and if so, do you use water and honey too?
@crafterine

Yes absolutely! You get readymade liquid gum Arabic too. You don’t need to add water, if the contents have honey, you can skip it too. (It’ll be mentioned in the back label)

Thanks for wonderful video...Can you suggest me the best preservative?
@crafterine

The most commonly used preservative would be clove oil, or even thyme essential oil. If you do not like the smell of it, you can always use sodium benzoate.

Do you still use mica powder for matte/flat colors?
@crafterine

Mica makes the watercolours shimmery. I would suggest you to try oxide pigments, cadmium, ultramarine etc for matte watercolours :)

Is there a specific type of honey that is more pure than other types that would work better? Or would any liquid honey do?
@crafterine

Yes. Acacia honey works best :) other food grade, natural honey also works. I wouldn't recommend store bought honey though.

That’s normal if it’s a food-grade gum arabic powder. I use the same sometimes. If you wanna get the honey coloured binder, you would need to purchase artist-grade gum arabic powder 😄

That's quite a long wait. It has happened to me with a few pigments. But for mica pigments it should dry in half the time. Maybe try working around the honey being added. You may wanna reduce honey.

Hello! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I just started making my own watercolors, they looked dry (I kept them for 2/3 days to dry, then I put them in a closed glass container). After a while they started to soften again (even the ones I've done about a month ago), as if they had either absorbed moisture or perhaps the innermost layers were oozing. Has it ever happened? Where and how can I store them to keep them dry? Thank you!
@bloodmoonmonsters990
@bloodmoonmonsters990 2 года назад
The texture and hardness of the paint can depend on the amount of honey (and maybe glycerin. Honey and glycerin tend to attract moister) you put in, if you add honey into the paint (not the honey included in the binder) it tends to stay more wet. For storing I would recommend some type of box with air flow or one that is not completely sealed off

It depends on the amount of paint you're making. For 5g of pigment, I add 2-3 drops. Some paint makers add them straight into the binder too.
