I would recommend making a video on how to become a great coach and progressing up the ranks so to speak, to possibly even a college or professional level. I don't think this topic is covered enough but can be very valuable information for some. Love the videos!

Coach, thank you for the reply! And there's another question I would like to ask but is irrelevant to the shooting techniques videos you're making now, which is in a coach perspective how do you teach a player to improve his awareness on both ends of the game or what can players do to train themselves for that matter? Also as a professional and experienced coach as yours, what is your philosophy on team offense and defense, I've seen the videos of your insights on triangle offense so are there anything else besides that? Thank you very much in advance!
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 7 лет назад
So-o-o-o sorry for a VERY tardy reply! I didn't notice this post until today (6 months late!!). Court awareness comes from playing...a lot! Or a player can learn a lot by watching good teams play on TV. As different scenarios pop up, a player will "file" those away in his brain and be able to call upon them in in later play. As for offensive and defensive philosophy, that really depends on our personnel. I really, really value the continuous development of a player's ball skills. The better each player's skills are, the better we are going to be on offense. And the better my team's skills are, the more wide open we will be on offense. Whatever we do, we will push the ball up the floor constantly, even after an opponent's score. We are looking for (1) fast break, (2) secondary break, and (3) great ball movement in our half court offense. Again, sorry for missing this 6 months ago....hopefully, better late than never. Best- Doug Schakel
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 7 лет назад
As for defensive philosophy, personnel still dictates...if I have speed and quickness we will extend our defense. If we are slow footed, we will constrict the defense and guard a smaller area on the floor. I was a multiple presses (1-2-1-1 full court zone press, 2-2-1 three-quarter court zone press, 1-2-2 half court zone press, then regroup into man to man defense coach in high school. We, literally changed defenses on the fly....often as our player's shot was in the air, I called out our next press alignment. We also used a full court Run and Jump man to man defense with inbounds denial. "Back in the day" there were two basic approaches to defense: "Surprise and Change" as espoused by legendary North Carolina coach Dean Smith and "Simplicity and Execution" championed by Hall of Famer Bob Knight of Indiana University. Our defensive scheme was based on Coach Smith's philosophy. Changing defenses kept our opponents off-guard and guessing so that they became basketball "thinkers" (not good for them) instead of basketball players....they became hesitant. The last 4years of my high school coaching stint, our average score was 81-42. We won a state championship, had a state runner-up, finished 3rd at state, and finished 6th at state during that time. We would begin the season with two presses and then add additional presses every week or two until we had all of our defenses in. It got easier with each passing year because our JV and frosh teams were doing this too. In college, we did a 180 degree change in defensive philosophy. Several of our opponents had up to 42% more scholarship money than we did! So we had to figure out how to get more out of less. We adopted the Blocker/Mover Offensive scheme and the Pack Line Defense made famous by Dick Bennett (Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Wisconsin-Green Bay, and University of Wisconsin). By shrinking the number of possessions, we found we could close the talent gap with our financially better off opponents. And it worked well...we won seven Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (NCAA Div. II) championships. I hope this adequately answers your question. Best- Doug Schakel

@TheMinecraftJones

Coach I can you are a very smart man and I've learned a lot of your videos, so I can presume that you've seen that great shooters like Curry, Lowry, Butler, Mitch Richmond and many others turn their feet at a slight angle to align their hip and shoulder. Why do you not teach this to your own players? or do you not try to change their shots but rather make them confident in whatever shot they have?
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 8 лет назад
Actually, I do teach that in our "3 Keys to Making More Shots" video. I absolutely am with you, the top shooters do not square their feet to the basket. They are slightly staggered and the lead foot will point to approx. 11:00. Without looking, I am going to guess our demonstrator in this video is more square. He was demonstrating a couple of footwork patterns that he does not use himself....we'll get on it!

Doug Schakel: Coach, where can I get that shooting brace that Tyler is wearing? I'd like to buy one for my daughter who is currently playing basketball to improve her shooting. The one that I found in Amazon is not the same as the one Tyler is wearing. I would greatly appreciate it if you can tell where to buy it. This is my email: sapik2008@gmail.com. I greatly appreciate it coach.
@stephenosuji9966

Does the brace help with alignment as well? For example keeping the ball on the right side of the nose when the ball is being raised to the set/ release point?
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 3 года назад
No, the brace does not help with alignment. Its main function is to see that the "Shooter's C" doesn't turn into a "V."
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 3 года назад
BTW, the brace is no longer available at D. W. Quail Golf BUT Google "Right Angle 2" and you will several choices as to where to purchase it.

what's the point about the device on his arm? Does it fix elbow flare out or something else? btw good video, thanks coach!
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 2 года назад
When the upper arm on your shooting arm is parallel to the floor, you want your forearm at a 90 degree angle to that upper arm. Those two parts of the arm form a backwards "L." Some people collapse that forearm back toward the head so that the two arm pieces form a "V" which will result in a flat shot; a root cause of "streak shooting." The Right Angle golf brace is used here because it locks out at 90 degrees and makes it impossible for the forearm to collapse into a "V." BTW. if you go to "Doug Schakel Basketball - RU-vid" you will see nine videos on shooting as well as 19 other videos on basketball.
@takeoverthegame
@takeoverthegame 2 года назад
@@DougSchakel "V" shape is not good? But many NBA players use this style of shooting, like Curry, Trae Young, and they both can shoot long range with high arc. In my experience, V shape could provide more power because you fold your arm more.
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 2 года назад
@@takeoverthegame You are correct about those players shooting with a "V" but it is what I call an EARLY "V"....it comes before the ball is lifted to head height. What the brace is used for is to correct a LATE "V." Having said that, there will always be exceptions in how the ball gets to the intended release point. A long, long time ago, Keith Wilkes positioned the ball behind his head on his shot but was a good shooter because he was able to maneuver the ball into the correct position at the critical release point.
@takeoverthegame
@takeoverthegame 2 года назад
@@DougSchakel it makes sense! so you mean that Curry use en EARLY "V", but when the ball arives at release point , which is about head height, hie turn the "V" into "L", for maximum control?

What's the specific brace is that and where can you order it?
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 8 лет назад
Jasper- This is actually a brace used in golf to maintain width on a golfer's back swing. But I realized that I could use it with BB shooter's to get them to retain the "Shooter's C" instead of the dreaded "Shooter's V." (see our video "Correcting Shooting Form Flaws (#2): One-Handed Alignment Drill for an explanation and demonstration). You can get one at an on-line golf store (dwquail.com). Scroll quite a ways down their web page until you get to a bunch of little boxes with titles like "Swing Plane," "Putting," etc. Click on "Full Swing" and then scroll down a little ways until a picture of the brace appears (called "Right Link"). They just changed from black to white plastic. The player who needs the brace, wears it anytime he/she is working on shooting. But not when being defended (injury to defender). Hope this is helpful. --Doug Schakel

Tell me EXACTLY what you look at when you shoot the ball. I am wondering if you are looking at the back of the rim and, therefore, hitting what you are looking at. If you go to the very beginning of our video entitled " 3 Keys to Making More Shots - Doug Schakel Basketball", I talk about distance control and methods a player can use for "targeting." I think you will find the answer there. Let me know how it works out for you. Best- Doug Schakel

so what if a defender stays really close to you when taking a 3 points shot? wouldn't it lead to an offensive foul too?
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 8 лет назад
I am guessing you are referring to the shooter's forward drift? He started working on his shot 3 weeks ago. He doesn't require this much forward drift. He will gradually decrease it. In our first video "Making More Three Point Shots (#1), we have a 4'7", 70 lb. 4th grade boy 3 point shooter making college length 3s. Because of his size, he needs lots of forward drift. As he grows older and stronger, he will cut down the amount of forward drift significantly.
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 8 лет назад
And the other consideration is this: If the defender is really close to you, you probably shouldn't attempt the shot.
@DougSchakel

If a defender is really close to you, you want to counter by driving the ball.

Very interesting that corner 3's are the lowest percentage in the college game - it's the exact opposite at the NBA level, where teams actually HUNT for those shots. Huh.
@DougSchakel
@DougSchakel 7 лет назад
You are right about the NBA liking the corner shot. One of the reasons is that is a slightly shorter shot because the court is not wide enough at that point....so the arc actually becomes a straight line and thus a slightly shorter shot.. I am guessing, even in the NBA, that there will be some players who don't shoot as well from the corner as from other spots on the floor. Good observation, by the way.
