Carry fully loaded Windows 10 in your pocket. Just plug in the USB on a computer and restart.
It's easy as 1,2,3..
1. Create a Virtual Hard Disk file -
Open Disk Management. Create a Dynamic VHD file in local hard disk.
2. Extract the WIM Image to VHD -
Mount the Windows 10 setup ISO.you will find a file 'install.wim' inside the sources folder.
Extract that Wim image file to the VHD using GImageX
Download GImageX from here-
www.autoitscript.com/site/autoit-tools/gimagex
3. Add boot entry on USB -
copy the VHD to USB. Mount it. run bcdboot to add BCD entry of VHD in the USB.
In the BIOS menu choose USB boot and enjoy portable Windows 10.

5:46 Why do you have a boot manager on the USB before adding the VHD file? Is there some other preparation for the USB required first? Can I really take a VHD of a windows install and just run the bcdboot command to make the USB bootable?!

Can this be done with WinXP? Or are the tools (bcdboot, gimagex, etc) different for XP? (I have an XP Oracle VirtualBox, that I'd like to image an external drive with.. can the image be transferred such that I can then boot/run XP via a USB/SATA cable?)

I want to go from Win7 on my current HD to Win10 VHD on same current HD. I read on MS site that Win10 won't work in a VHD file, only VHDX. True or False?? If true, then we can't use Win7 to make the VHDX because it came out before VHDX was invented.

I haven't tried this, but I have worked with vhd booting. The video claims you can boot dual boot windows 10 VHD on windows 7. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ui_0Q50Qgi0.html

Clearly, your USB device is not bootable. Go to Disk Management - Mount the VHD from your USB (like H:\Win10.vhd). Run CMD as administrator and type- bcdboot.exe H:\Windows /s H: /f ALL change H: to whatever your USB drive is assigned. This will create a Boot Configuration Data Entry in the MBR of the USb, which will boot from the residual win10.vhd file in the USB. Try it and let me know.

Thanks for the nice Tutorial. I have BackTrack 5 installed on a vhd how can i boot from it? I tried EasyBCD but booting stops at grub shell.
@BingSuMan
@BingSuMan 6 лет назад
+HARI OM backtrack 5 was in 2012 AFAIK. It's now called Kali Linux. You can boot from VHD, but first check its content, and write the grub config accordingly. Try it and let me know.

B ing Su/Man It works fine on virtualbox but i can't add real partition in Virtual machine to locate the vhd (so that BT.vhd is available to grub) I tried virtualbox internalcommands but it didn't work
@BingSuMan
@BingSuMan 6 лет назад
+HARI OM you can not add just one partition, you have to add the whole real disk. Find the VHD from virtual box and directly boot from it. Grub has nothing to do with virtual box settings. Use internalcommand only if you want to boot from actual disk on virtual box.

can you just copy a virtual disk file (all ready with info) on to the flash drive, then boot i?
@BingSuMan
@BingSuMan 6 лет назад
+Eric Petersen exactly, all you need to do is, create a bcd entry on that flash drive and it's ready to boot from any computer.

Maybe the USB is not bootable, try plugging into other computer. Or, You can try booting your VHD from your HDD itself, just copy the VHD to any of your local disk partition (like C:\Win10.vhd or D:\Win10.vhd). Now mount the VHD from Disk management. You will see a new drive will appear (like I:\ or H:\). ADD the Windows VHD menu to your Current BCD; run CMD as administrator and type- bcdboot V:\windows (Change V:\ to your VHD drive's name!) Open MSCONFIG. In the boot section, you have to change back your current OS to default. You can add both 64 and 32 bit version of any windows(7,8,8.1,10). Try it and let me know.

It takes a long time to boot - If you copy the VHD in a slow USB 2.0 drive. Or, If you have insufficient space on the USB Or, If you make a dynamic VHD.

+Aarav Sharma suppose your usb storage device on drive E:\\ and you mounted the VHD file (which you copied to the USB drive) to Drive F:\\ then rub command prompt as administrator and run the following command - _____________________________ bcdboot F:\Windows /s E: ------------------------------------------- Now you can see a hidden Boot directory has been created in your USB @ E:\\ with the BCD file in it. You can later delete unnecessary language packs from the Boot folder. Try it, and let me know if it works or not.
@Rilian7
@Rilian7 8 лет назад
This doesn't work because the system doesn't know whatever the vhd=[X:] drive is outside of the current Windows session that the BCD drive was created in. And you cannot choose [boot] either for VHDs.
@BingSuMan
@BingSuMan 7 лет назад
Did you tried yourself? I understand about your concern; see, Windows 7+ have this option to this. When you create a BCD entry of a VHD it just points the File location. If you select the VHD entry from Boot menu, it locates the VHD file, then Mount it at C:\ drive. Same thing happens when you try to boot VHD from USB. bcdboot creates a BCD entry it the MBR of the USB drive, irrespective of where the VHD will be mounted in another computer. Things to be remembered - 1. Copy the VHD to USB 2. Mount the VHD (from USB and not your local disk) 3. run bcdboot X:\windows /s Y: (where X: is mounted VHD partition and Y:\ is USB drive partition) Try it and let me know.
