I made this for my family. My mom and step dad are from Puerto Rico. They were blown away and couldn't believe I made them. They said I've earned my boriqua card. I even made some vegan for my sister. Thank you so much for teaching me. I'm making them again this year and every year.

@@moss.and.hemlocke I cook green canned Jack fruit but I season it like I would the pork. With sofrito, sazon, adobo, better than bouillon no chicken base, onions and garlic, black pepper, oregano and bay leaves. I make hers first to avoid cross contamination. I give her a dozen, it's my gift to her every year.

My MIL is Puerto Rican and she introduced me to so much authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. I remember the first time that I saw a pastele and I was like, “unh unh, I don’t think so.” But when I put this in my mouth a spectacular explosion occurred. I have been in love with these since the early 90’s when my daughter was born. There is nothing on the planet like these. I miss them and seeing this makes me want them even more. Thank you for sharing your recipe with us. I hope that the Island and the people are recovering since the hurricanes. Much love I have for the Puerto RIcan people many times over. Puerto Rico/Puerto Ricans will always have a special place in my heart forever!

Thank you for your video. Brought back memories of my mother making and selling pastilles and coquito each Christmas to earn money to buy gifts. She always used the paper as my bother and sisters did not like pastilles wrap in a leave. It would ruin the pastilles by making it taste like the leaf. She also ground it by hand until she learned to use a blender. God Bless you.

You're are a wonderful teacher. Thank you for sharing your heritage. I love that these are not made with corn like a traditional Mexican tamale would be. I've must make these. You're so right about the taste/smell making you think about family. Whenever I make my mom's root vegetable beef soup, I think about my childhood, coming home from school and smelling her soup cooking on the stove top. I hope the smells and foods I create in my kitchen will someday remind my kids of me. God bless.

I recall my first time with my mother-in-law and abuelo... awww I was 16 years old.. (yes married young and to this still with the man who compliments my life and fathered my children - OLD SCHOOL HERE)... but wow.. was that a traditional moment to recall - that I still hold dear to me and plan on giving to my grands today! and YEEEESSS. Hawaii has a huge Puerto Rican community and we learned to eat pasteles anytime during the year, while our pasteles are a little different, they use a black olives and sometimes a light hint of chinese chili peppers which always gave it a zip but super delicious. If you every go to Hawaii, try it so delicious, love the culture!

My aunt makes them in foil, we unwrap, then eat. No garbonzo, No pimento, just meat filling. I haven't had them in years!!! Crave it! She also made a delicious rice, and a baked Rice Pudding!!! She is a GREAT COOK!!!!!

I love watching your videos. I can hear the excitement in your voice. By the way you didn't put some pimiento rojo in your first pastel so don't give me that one to eat. lol. Thank you for your great videos

Thanks for making this video and your other ones!! My great grandma passed away a few years ago and it was tradition to make it with the family. She was the glue to our family and after she passed, they stopped doing the tradition. I ask my mom for one every year but she never remembers to save me one 😑. So now I must take matters into my own hands and teach my family how to make them. Thank you!

Hi! Love your videos. I am getting married to a Puertorican guy and my in-laws want me to learn how to cook their traditional dishes (I am from the DR). I will give all your recipes a try. You are so cheerful that makes me want to turn everything into a tradition. Thanks!
