How to make quality incense sticks

A video to show how I make incense using relatively easy to obtain high quality ingredients. (edit 2018)This is not intended as a exact instructional video but more of an inspiration to try your own blends. Quite a few people have asked since I put this video up for a list of ingredients here in the description but I am not up for that, use what you want, but just for an idea my favorite blend I am making at the moment is 6tsp Tabu-no-ki, 5tsp Agar wood powder, 1tsp Frankincense powder and 1 tsp Storax powder. Enjoy ! Dx

I have so much to thank you! I made my own recipe inspired by yours, using palo santo, sandalwood, frankincense, benzoin, lavender and tolu balsam. I tried your earlier (using charcoal instead of makko) and this one has such a more complex aroma but the main noites still like yours. Also the way that you make the incense is very relaxing. Hope that you can make more incense recipes videos like these!

just a thought. instead of putting the resin into the quarter teaspoon, use the quarter teaspoon to indent the shape into the powder. then pour the resin into the shape the quarter teaspoon left in it. that way you get your measurement without getting sticky resin on the spoon, and or wasting any from stuck on residue.

to handle tolou balsam, Peru balsam, liquid styrax and other similar resins, I suggest you find something similar to those chopsticks that are used to eat Asian food, only steel and a little larger in diameter, possibly with a handle at the top; with the tip take the material, and with a flame, heat the upper part to the material, taking care not to stay too close to the resin .. once the wand is hot enough, the resin will slide without a trace ... I do like this

@@maybury78 So sorry for the late reply but I didn't get a notification for some reason, perhaps because I wasn't subscribed. I thought I had subscribed but hadn't so I have now. Thank you for getting back to me and for the link. I haven't stopped researching about incense and places to find good ingredients, it's hard to tell when ordering online of course, especially when it comes to the pricey stuff. I've also just finished reading Carl F. Neal's 2nd edition on making incense, interesting read and some great tips. The book titled Incense: Crafting & Use of Magickal Scents: New and Expanded. I'm not really into the ritual magical side of the book as I just want good smelling incense as most other bamboo dipped scented is undesirable giving me sinus, eye and throat issues, probably due to chemicals. I like to have a go at things myself if I can, especially when it has a creative side. I came back to your video because it's the best I've found on RU-vid for what I'm aiming to achieve. @@maybury78 I just ordered from the oud market you recommend, it gets great reviews. Now I have everything I need to get started. I found the same extruder yourself and Carl uses also on ebay. I'm thinking of drilling a hole either side of the hole in the middle for quicker and easier extruding three lines at a time, my own idea so it might not work good lol. As I am a total novice and some ingredients are quite expensive or harder to find , a video on some of your best buy ingredients compared to some you may not be so interested in purchasing again in a hurry. The pro's and con's of some ingredients ( easy/hard ) to work with and why plus. Perhaps another recipe or how you went through your journey to achieve a good burning, smelling Joss stick. As there is very little good information online compared to other topics I think another video would be very well received as I think this one was/is. I make RU-vid videos myself. Sometime in the future when I know what I'm doing I might make a video on the subject and of course give you and Carl a mention but I would of course clear that with you both first. My channel is a campervan channel really but I use incense in my van. Certain scents are great for keeping wasps and fly's away in summer. Perhaps you know of a good ingredient for this purpose, if so, stick it in a video :)

Why not use a router to set grooves into the wooden drying board so that each stick is automatically absolutely straight when it's laid down?

Yep that could be a good idea. I like to roll the sticks over after a while to help them dry evenly, I guess grooves might make that a bit harder. Thanks

Place a lightweight board on top and invert the pair; remove the grooved board and roll the sticks as needed. When done, reverse the process and then help the sticks to settle back into their grooves.
@ShamanicSavant

More trouble than it's worth with small hand made batches. Plus you kinda want the freedom of movement you get with a flat open workspace as things don't always go as planned. When making large quantities they do it spaghetti style and slow dry so the bundle keeps the sticks straight. It's actually a lot easier to make your sticks a little thicker and shorter... easier to work with, less waste, more options, and easy to store in glass vials :)

One more question . How long will be the burn time, and where can I most likely purchase the herbal resins (Frankincense ,Lavender etc..)?
@maybury78
@maybury78 7 лет назад
it depends on what ingredients you use and the ratios as to what the burn time is. For the short credit card length ones mine usually burn for about 30mins. I did make some for a friend's mum who wanted long burn times for her prayers, they were quite a bit longer and burnes for about 90mins. You can get ingredients from all over, there are some shops quite close to me where I can get stuff, failing that eBay, Amazon or other online shops. good luck, be good to know what you come up with and what works well. Hi thanks, the video was intended more as a guide to experimenting then to making a replica, the main essential ingredient is Makko Powder(Tabu No Ki) and whatever fragrant ingredients you want to play with.

I just received a few pounds of high quality guggle gum from India, I can’t wait to make some sticks to burn, I hate the charcoal tablets, they make my house smell like a barbecue. ThisIs guggle gum is wonderful though it kind of smells like cupcakes

Use an electric incense heater. Make sure it's one that gets hot enough, the old metal teapot styled ones from China are inexpensive on eBay and work great. Most of the fancy ceramic ones have weak heaters :)

You had me until you pointed out your pile of Palo Santo wood. This tree, native to Ecuador and Peru primarily, has been raped and depleted of its bark because of all the yoga folks, the people who think appropriating other religions and cultural rituals is "cool" and "new age." Seriously, these trees are greatly endangered because of its "holy wood" meaning to the communities of South American countries and how millions of people not of these regions or cultures decided to start using it because it's catchy and makes them feel spiritual burning it for the fun of it. Please try to use wood which is sustainably grown and processed, there are several other types you could be utilizing instead. Red Cedar (which is not actually a cedar) makes a wonderful incense base due to its lack of smell contribution yet combustible properties. You can easily purchase this online already in powdered form for using in incense. Same for Sandalwood or Pine, though these will lend scent to your incense. Nice video, however. Thanks for sharing your process with us. Sorry about the lecture, I just think you and your viewers should be aware of this ill usage of Palo Santo tree bark and how the trees are going extinct due to the "incense/smudging trend."
