Daniel shows you how to make Seaweed Soup! Seaweed Soup (Miyeok guk) is a classic home soup that is eaten throughout the year, but also on your Birthdays. In Korea, we say if you don't eat this soup on your birthday, you have not properly aged a year. Hmm - makes me not want to eat it! But anyhow, here is how to make it at home with the right balance of soy sauce and salt.

Here is why you could use regular soy sauce for soup soy sauce. Back in the days korean grandmas did not make two different kinds of soy sauce. They just made one every year. At first the sauce is saltier and bland in taste and is much lighter in color. They called this soup soy sauce since it was mainly used to season soups since it did not mess with the color of the soup. When the sauce ages (at least over three years) it darkens up and gains more umami. Since the color of the sauce is darker (jin-hada in korean), they called this jin-ganjang(regular soy sauce). Nowadays we have those factory made regular soy sauce and soup soy sauce. There's really not much of a difference if you could bear with the color of your soup.

rhomandeities 하로한끼 one meal a day... is also a nice korean cooking youtube channel. I also like this channel because the cook is jolly and he has clear english. Maangchi recipe is really complicated to follow.

I remember when I tried this for the first time. My family decided to go to a fabulous Korean restaurant for my sister's birthday and we ended up getting this. I ended up eating mine and my other sister's because she was afraid to try it. Gawd, this soup is one of the best and definitely one that I need to try on my nieces and nephews soon.

i saw a video on how new moms in Korea take care of themselves, and a vital part is this seaweed soup, and it is a tradition for the child to have it on their birthday. ever since then i have been craving seaweed soup and wanting to try making it!! my mom used to live in South Korea for a while (we are American), so she thought it sounded good too. i already love dried seaweed as a snack, so i’m excited to try 🤍 not to mention all the health benefits. thank you for the recipe!

Made this soup for a factory co-worker ajuma, on her 60th birthday. Great success. Everyone enjoyed it and the pot was empty from people having seconds. I was temped to use a vegetable or beef stock, but glad I didn't. Plenty of flavor following this recipe. Thank-you.

I fell in love with this soup the first time I tried cooking it, and now everytime I crave for it , I cook it. So easy and comforting. I think I eat it as much as I eat ramyeon, but ofcourse not everyday 😆

Last week we went to our local Korean restaurant to celebrate my birthday. We've only been there three or four times but they make us feel like regular customers. When they heard my hubby say Happy Birthday to me, they brought me a bowl of seaweed soup--which isn't on the menu! Theirs had a shellfish base instead of beef but wow--it was delicious!

My fav parts are boom shakkalakka and non discrimination of the pots. No pot left behind. There is also a hidden gem/message here, dont forget to buy your korean wife/or any wife a car or house on their birthday. Dropping gems son! Keep on keeping on!! 🤙🏽

There used to be a small unassuming Korean restaurant near me that's been around for almost 30 years. I used to go there all the time by myself for their $7.99 unassuming lunch buffet that had all-you-can-eat Gimbap, pickled bean sprouts, bulgogi, fried rice, seaweed, mandu, chicken legs, kimchi (of course), and sometimes spinach and baby anchovies. They also had unlimited seaweed soap and eggdrop soup. I used to consume 5~6 small bowls of their seaweed soup when I'm there. Sadly the owner, a very sweet Korean lady in her 60s, found out she without warning that she had cancer. And within a month she passed away : (. The restaurant was never the same after her passing, and I guess the family decided to sell it off.

I don't know what i did wrong but i tried making this soup before by following a different youtuber's recipe and the soup literally tasted like seawater. The smell of the seaweed was also very strong. I ended up throwing away the whole pot of soup. I'm gonna try making this again using your own recipe. Good luck to me! 😅

I already cooking it twice! The taste shocked me! It was heavenly 😋😋😋 i think im addicted 😍😍😍 however, instead of kelp (cos i dont have it), i use nori dried seaweed (so i twerk the recipe a little)and omg it was so good. Im still wondering whether to use kelp next time cos it already tasted amazing 😂 THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR RECIPE 😍

Thanks for this super easy and great recipe. I bought wakame today and wanted to try a soup with it, and this was exactly what I was looking for. I made it with turkey and it turned out delicious. I have a question, though. I didn't discard the soaking water and added it to the pot along with soaked wakame. Is there a reason why you discard it?

Dig the old school granny lookin' pot you're using! Way more interesting than the generic Instagram/Pinterest/I Just Raided TJ Maxx lookin' stuff. It REALLY looks like some Asian version of old school Corningware, back when it was made in USA (called Pyroceram); it has a certain shine to it. They are awesome because you can cook, bake, freeze & serve with it. Thanks for the video, I'm making this now.

The only one we labeled "hard" so far has been kimchi - because there are many intermediary steps. But there are so many different types of Kimchi. Homecooks in Korea like to assess your culinary skills by how well/poorly you make kimchi. Another very difficult Korean recipe that comes to is Ganjang Gejang (Raw Crabs Marinated in Soy Sauce). That really requires some know-how to make it fresh and tasty. Great question though Peter ;)
