I SOOOO wish u would do some projects with a solder IRON! I LOOOVE my iron & feel that the supplies were cheaper than with using a torch..its really an entirely different “skill set” in my opinion. But great video! I really enjoy your tuts!!

What kind of pickle did you use that didn't have to be heated in a pickle pot? Also, how did you dispose of it? Thanks so much. This was a great tutorial.

Possible to get close-ups of the project once you're done? It's impossible to see the details on such tiny pieces. Thanks!

Thank you for the first class, I’m a beginner in making jewelry so these classes will help me to understand jewelry making. I need to start from the beginning how long does your tools last you my pliers are making mark on my jump ring?where is a good place to buy sterling silver from chain and wire. Do I get a certificate when I finish your classes.😀

If your pliers are making marks, you can use a little tape to cover each side or you can check out Tool Magic which adds a coating on the pliers to protect the piece you are making. Have fun!

My favorite place for wire (sterling & gold filled...not plated) is Rio Grande...I haven’t found anywhere that has better prices.

Susan: which would be more versatile a raw hide mallet or the nylon mallet? I can't find any information why one would want one over the other. I am a home DIYer not trying to become a big time jewelry designer. LOL

What exactly is pickle? What is pay solder and how does it differ from the hard pieces of solder? Finally, I don't understand the reason for flux.
@JewelSchool
@JewelSchool 3 года назад
Pickle is a combination of a pickling compound mixed with water. You dip your piece in it after it's soldered. This helps to clean it by removing any oxidation that might have occurred during the heating process. The spray is called flux. This is sprayed on your piece before soldering. It cleans, coats, and protects, plus, enables the solder to flow easily between the joints when heated. As Susan says, "no flux, no flow!" Here is a link to the supplies used in the video: www.jtv.com/product/soldering-basics-supply-kit-includes-torch-tweezers-pick-board-paste/JSYT15?mcid=XSOjsyt Stay tuned. We are working on a video ALL about pickle! Good luck!

Nice project. (BUT!!! it drove me nuts seeing you solder without tying your hair back - an essential safety thing in the studio)

Lol. It drives me nuts that people say they're 'soddering' or going to 'sodder.' It's soLdering & soLder - why do they drop the L?

But, at least the lady in the video was saying "I'm going to.." & not "You're going to." That is so much better!!

What would you use the sterling scraps for, exactly?
@JewelSchool
@JewelSchool 2 года назад
Hi! Susan says she does a few things. First, she says to never throw away your sterling silver. She often uses her silver scraps by melting them down to make jawan beads. It is a technique using tiny spots of silver that create a decorative texture. Also, sometimes she sends them back to the refinery where they can be redeemed for cash. Hope this helps!
